LOPER, Cecil P.
OBITUARY AND NEWS STORY,
The Phoenix Gazette,
April 4, 1959
TRAPPED WORKER DROWNS (photo of worker being lowered to pull out victim)
A doomed man's screams were remembered today by would be rescuers who battled furiously as gushing water from a broken pipe engulfed his pinned body and snuffed out his life. Cecil P. LOPER, 44, of 2447 E. Jackson, a construction worker was drowned in a sewer trench excavation yesterday afternoon at 35th and Glendale avenue. The job on which Loper was employed is part of the $70 million municipal improvement project now being carried out by the City of Phoenix. He and fellow workers were in the 17-foot-deep trench when a 40-foot section of the north wall caved in. A moment later a 12-inch water main broke. Loper's legs were pinned between timbers used in shoring the earth against a cave-in as the trench begin to fill with water. A rope was tied around Loper's chest and seven men tugged on it in a vain attempt to free the drowned man. Joining in the rescue attempt was Loper's brother, Hollis, 35, of 4041 E. Katherine. Hollis held his brother's head above the rising water as long as he could, until he was forcible pulled away and lifted by rope to the top of the trench. "Help me, Hollis. My God, help me!" the doomed man cried as the water buried him. Loper's body was recovered by Eddie COX, 5401 N. 43rd Ave., who was lowered onto the muck by a cable suspended from a boom. COX is a lineman for the Salt River Project. The drowning victim, an employee of the George F. Cook Construction Co., had lived in Phoenix 17 years. He was born in Pauls Valley, Okla. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memory chapel of A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams, with the Rev. Ralph KOFOED officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Marvin BARNES; two sons John and Cecil E.; his father, Jess LOPER, and brother, Hollis, all of Phoenix, and another brother and two sisters, residing out of state.
