THE ARIZONA REPUBLICAN, SATURDAY MORNING, JANUARY 3, 1914
The big event of the week within the realm of the Woman's club is the lecture to be given next Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, by Mrs. NEWSON. Out of a set of five topics offered them by Mrs. NEWSOM, the club chose the subject, "Travels in Japan." Through her own practical experience with travels abroad the speaker of Tuesday evening is especially well adapted to her subject. As secretary for the federation of woman's clubs in Arizona and as a lecturer on the University of Arizona extension course, Mrs. NEWSOM is also thoroughly familiar with the operations of the clubs through the state at the present time.

SPORTING EVENTS TO CELEBRATE NEW YEAR
Practically all business in Mesa was suspended yesterday and all joined in celebrating the New Year, some in one way and some in another. . . Following the ball game, Fred MOORE and Nate BRUNDAGE, managers of the cowboy tournament, took charge of the grounds and the contests arranged by them were begun. The first thing on the program was the goat tying contest, which was won by Ed HOWELL in twenty-one seconds. “Tex” BARKLEY being second, a record of twenty-three seconds. Next came the relay race, for a prize of $5 and the entrance fees, amounting in all to $12.50. This event was won by Ben ROBBINS of Tempe. At this time an accident came near marring the pleasures of the day, as in making a trial run and change of horses before the beginning of the race, Mr. ROBBINS in dismounting at the starting point collided heavily with his second horse, and according to later reports broke one or more of his ribs. However, at the time he gave no sign of his injury but continued in the contests, winning the relay race and taking part in the calf branding event after being hurt. For the broncho riding contest there were three entries, the prize being the entrance fees, which amounted to $7.50. This was won by George PEMBERTON

The biggest event of the day was the calf branding tournament. The entrance fee for this contest was $5 and twelve men participated. . . . Hardy SHELL of Tonto captured first money, roping, tying and branding his calf in 56 seconds, while Ben STEWART of Tempe was second in 58 seconds.
