JAMES MOSES
of Boutetourt County, Virginia
and a partial list of his descendants.

JAMES MOSES was born in England in the late 1700's and was the son of one WILLIAM MOSES, according to information furnished by his grand-daughter, LOUISA ALLEN MOSES ROGERS. Whether he came to America after reaching adulthood or was brought by his parents as a child, is not known by the writer. He married POLLY ADKINS, also born in England, and their home was in Boutetourt County, Virginia. He was a farmer and they were members of the Methodist Church. He later moved to Greenbrier County, Virginia.

For a clearer understanding it seems desirable to give a brief history of the counties of Virginia at that time and also the formation of the state of West Virginia at a later date. Rockbridge County was taken of Augusta and Rockbridge Counties in 1778. The same year in which Greenmbrier County was formed. Alleghany County was formed in 1822 from the three counties of Bath, Monroe and Boutetourt. The part of Rockbridge County where the Natural Bridge is was originally a part of Boutetourt County.

West Virginia was claimed by France until the close of the French and Indian War in 1763. Sioux Indians also claimed it but in 1768 ceded their rights to England. It then became a part of Virginia. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, the western counties met and set up a separate government as the inhabitants of the western counties remained loyal to the Federal Government. The Western Counties became West Virginia and was made & separate state in 1863. It was settled chiefly by German and Scotch-Irish of Protestant faith from settlements farther north. Greenbrier County, West Va. of which Lewisburg is the county seat, adjoins Alleghany Co., Va. Fincastle is the county seat of Boutetourt County, Va.

The exact date when JAMES MOSES moved his family from Boutetourt County to Greenbrier is not known but likely it was about 1850 as part of his children were already grown and married. Following is a Brief of Deed showing the first purchase of land in Greenbrier County by any of the MOSES name.

JAMES MOSES and Polly Adkins MOSES were the parents of eight children, all born in Boutetourt County. It has not been possible to obtain birth dates of all, therefore the order of their births as given may not be correct.

William Taylor b. 1815. Jacob b. ----. Sophia b. ----
Allen James and his twin b. March 5, 1824. Twin died young.
Charlotte b. March 26, 1826. Susan W. b. ----.

Jefferson Davis MOSES was a soldier in the Confederate States Army in the war between the states. Possibly Jacob also. During the war the home of JAMES MOSES was burned by the Federal soldiers. Stories are still told in the family about the hardships and trials at that time and how the women, who were left at home while their men folks were in the armies, had to hide their provisions in woodpiles and other places, as the homes were often raided by soldiers for food.

JAMES MOSES was a farmer and apparently also a merchant on a small scale, as there appears on the records a transfer of property to his son Allen J. MOSES.

Deed Book 19, Greenbrier County, West Va.
Grantor: JAMES MOSES of Greenbrier Co. Va.
Grantee: ALLEN J. MOSES of same state and county
Description: Tract of land conveyed to said JAMES MOSES by Alexander McClung, Sr. containing 100 acres more or less being the tract said MOSES now resides on. One Bay horse, one milk cow, one calf, five head of hogs, all goods now in the store consisting of dry goods and groceries Also household and kitchen furniture to secure the payment of a debt of Five hundred dollars due by bond to Rebecca Black, executed Oct.15, l851. Transfer of property dated Feb. 17, 1852. JAMES MOSES died in 1867 and is buried in Black Cemetery at Rupert, Greenbrier Co, West Va. His wife POLLY ADKINS MOSES died in 1871 and is buried at Lafayette, Montgomery, Va. She spent her last days with her daughter, Charlotte Moses Butt.

There appears on the early records of Boutetourt Co., Va. two agreements whereby MOSES men bound themselves unto the Governor of the Commonwealth of Va. in the sum of $150.00 each. "Known all men by these presents that we JOHN MOSES & CARY PITZER - are held & firmly bound into James P. Preston esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of One Hundred & fifty dollars current money to -.which payment well and- truly to be made to the one said Governor & his successors we bind our Heirs, Executors & Administrators3 Jointly & Severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals & dated the 10th day of Decem 1817.

The condition of the above obligation is such whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had & solemnized between the above JOHN MOSES & JANE WOOD Daughter of Zachariah Wood of this County----.

If therefore there be no lawful cause of impediment to obstruct said marriage, then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force & virtue." Signed by JOHN MOSES and Carey Pitzer.

"Acknowledged by me Zachariah Wood this 9th day of December 1817 that I am willing that my Daughter Jane Wood and JOHN MOSES shall be married and obtain a License.
Given by me the Day and Date above mentioned. (Signed) Zachariah Wood (his mark x)

The other agreement reads the same and shows impending marriage between between DAVID MOSES and Polly OIL and is dated January 3rd, 1832. Whether either or both of these MOSES men were related to JAMES MOSES, has not been determined.

Page 3
The first census of Pennsylvania lists a "WILLIAM MOSES-five in family, living in Philadelphia County". Whether this WILLIAM MOSES was the father of JAMES MOSES, who settled in Boutetourt Co., Va. has not been established.

The first census of Virginia gives only two MOSES names. ADAM MOSES in Hampshire Co. and CLEVEN MOSES in Princess Ann Co. However there must have been other MOSES men in Virginia at an early date as several MOSES names listed in "VIRGINIA Soldiers--Revolutionary War" in the Archives Division State Library, Richmond, Virginia.

Mr. C. B. MOSES of Fraziers Bottom, Putnam County, West Va. states that his grandfather came to America from Germany about 1795. His name was JACOB MOSES. He landed at New York and settled in Montgomery Co., Va. and that this JACOB was a brother to JAMES MOSES, who settled in Boutetourt Co. He says JAMES MOSES children were first cousins to his father JOHN MOSES. However, this information is apparently incorrect as the first JAMES MOSES who settled in Boutetourt Co. was of English descent according to information furnished by several of the older descendants now living in West Va. Also in early days it was quite the custom to call any one "cousin" who had the same name. A great many of JAMES MOSES descendants are of fair and somewhat ruddy complexion. Apparently of hardy stock and having somewhat the appearance and characteristics as being of partly Scotch descent. Many farmers among them. LOUISA MOSES ROGERS (27) says "We have no German blood in any MOSES".

2nd Generation

2 WILLIAM TAYLOR MOSES son of JAMES MOSES (1) b. l8l5 in Boutetourt Co., Va. d. 1892 in Nichcolas Co. West Va., aged 77 years. M. (Off. rec. of Alleghany Co. Va. Marriage Book 1, Page 8) to Mary Adaline Persinger, on Aug. 25, 1841 by Rev. Joseph Pinnell. The Persinger girl likely lived in that county as Persinger names appear on the old records. He moved his family to Greenbrier Co. and later from there to Nicholas County. He was a farmer. Their home was at Mt. Nebo.

Children: Mary Ann, Sarah, Charlotte Elizabeth, Julia, James A., Wade, Mattie, Emma, Clark, William Riley.

He married (2nd) Lucy Johns. She b. Fincastle, Va. Children by 2nd marriage: George David, Charles Hayes, Rufus, Theodore, Melcena, Annie, Samuel.

William Taylor MOSES farm adjoined the land of Capt. James Riley Ramsey. Capt. Ramsey's son, J. C. Ramsey, who was 82 years of age in l94O has given much help in the collection of data on the MOSES family living in Nicholas County, West Va. He states, "I knew Wm. T. MOSES and all of his children well, as they lived joining farms with my father's. I attended school with five of his children, first free school taught here about 1865 or 1866. Several of his grand-children went to school to me, as I taught over fifty years. Most of the MOSES family are hard working, honest people." With the kind permission of Mr. Ramsey we quote from the Ramsey Family History which he compiled, a description of the first Free School in the vicinity where they lived.

Page 4
The first free school taught in Ramsey school sub-district No. 1 was taught at what was then called the Nick Ramsey house, it having been built just before the Civil War. Nick was killed in September, 1861. The school was taught by John H. Morrison, not much of a scholar, holding I believe a No. 4 certificate, but his lack of scholarship was made up by industry and enthusiasm. The term was three months. There was a good fireplace and chimney. The seats were split logs with holes bored in the round sides and legs inserted and the flat side was turned up to sit on. The following persons were pupils of said school: Joseph Boggs, Mary White, Fanny White, Malon Wills, Julia Wills, Sarah Wills, Elsie Foster, George Huffman, Nancy Huffman, Martha Huffman, Melinda Huffman, Henry Huffman, John Wright, Bob Wright, Sallie Wright, Margaret Wright, Jacob Ramsey, Clark Ramsey, JAMES MOSES, WADE MOSES, MATTIE MOSES, JULIA MOSES, Spurgeon McClung, Floyd Ellis, Clark Ellis, Jasper Ellis, making 27." At a later date a school building was built and Mr. J. C. Ramsey says "The first free school building in Ramsey school sub-district was built by Wesley Ramsey and Cass Ramsey It was built of hewed poplar and oak legs, chinked and daubed, and Slats nailed over the cracks to keep the mud from falling on the inside. The following persons became teachers that were pupils in Ramsey school, regular free school, saying nothing about scores who attended in the select schools." Among the 66 names he gives is LORAINE MOSES, as one who became a teacher.

Jan. 27, 1862, Co. K, 14th Regiment, Virginia Cavalry. On Jan. 29, 1863 he was transferred to Co. E, 60th Reg. Va. Inf. and on the roll of that Company dated April 30, 1863 he was reported: "Deserter, went home on furlough of 20 days March 2nd and never returned." His name is not borne on subsequent rolls on file which cover period to Dec.31, 1864, and no later record as a member of this organization has been found. ~ The preceding quotation from The Adjutant General's Office, War. Dep't. Washington, D.C.

Page 6
It is claimed in the MOSES family that JEFFERSON DAVIS MOSES, as was also his brothers, sympathetic to the Federal Government, but was compelled to join the Confederate States Army as Greenbrier County was still a part of Virginia. When Greenbrier Co. joined the other Western counties and became a separate state in 1863, he then was under the jurisdiction of West Va. and the people thereof, for the most part, were Federalists. This would account for him being called a "Deserter" from the Confederate Army. Deserting or giving up without reason is far from being a MOSES quality. He m. May 6, 1856 to Elizabeth Halferty. She b. March 24, 1832 in Pennsylvania and she d. Jan. 26, 1892 Wheeler Co. Nebraska.

She was the daughter of Arthur Halferty b. Dec. 9, 1793 in Pennsylvania and Mary Lightfoot Halferty b. Feb. 24, 1800. They lived in York County, Pa. In the War of 1812 Arthur Halferty was a Sergeant in Cap't. Samuel White's Company, attached to the 5th Detachment in service at Buffalo, N.Y. under the command of Col. James Fenton, l8l4. This was the 2nd Brigade, 5th Division. Made up of men from York and Adams Co. Penn. Arthur Halferty was a nephew of Edward Halferty who served several years in the Penn. Malitia from Cumberland and Westmoreland Counties, Penn. From Penn. Archives 9th Series. Vol.1, Page 610. "On July 2, 1793 Governor Mifflin directed that a commission be issued to Edward Halferty, Colonel of the 5th Regiment upon receipt of return of elections from Charles Campbell, brigade Inspector of the Militia of the County of Westmoreland. Executive minutes." There are many other references to this Edward Halferty in the Penn. Archives, and references to his services during the Revolutionary War.

After the Civil War JEFFERSON DAVIS MOSES settled at Grand Rapids, Michigan. (About 1866). He worked in a saw mill and died there from injuries which he received at the saw mill. His age at time of death in 1870 was 35 years. Children: Mary Vianna, b. May 30, 1857, Herndon Tasville, b. Nov. 26, 1860 and Lucy Frances, b. June 26, 1864. All born in West Virginia.

The Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C. advises "Jefferson D. Moses, enlisted at Lewisburg, Va. Jan.27, 1862. Co. K. 14th Reg. Va. Cavalry, Confederate States Army on Jan. 29, 1863 he was transferred to Co. E. 60th Reg. Va. Inf. and on the roll of that Company dated April 30, 1863 he was reported "Deserter". Went home on furlough of 20 days March 2nd and never returned. His name is not borne on subsequent rolls on file which cover period to Dec.31, 1864, and no later record as a member of this organization has been found." It is claimed in the family of Jefferson Davis Moses that he, also his father and brothers, was sympathetic to the Federal Government, but was compelled to join the Confederate States Army as Greenbrier County was still a part of Virginia. When Greenbrier County joined with the other western counties and became a separate state in 1863, he was then under jurisdiction of West Virginia. The people thereof were, for the most part, Federalists. Which accounts for him being called a "Deserter."
