Introduction

These pages trace the Smith ancestry of sisters Julia Josephine Smith (1886-1920) and Maude Millicent Smith (1882-1883) (who married brothers Edward Isaac Burgess (1881-1965) and George Grant Burgess (1874-1950) of Blocksburg, California) to their earliest identified Smith ancestors, James and Mary (Hyatt) Smith of Sharon, Schoharie County, New York. All identified descendants of James and Mary for four generations are included.

Several Smiths, who may or may not be members of this family, have been mentioned in connection with this or other closely related families. In addition to the Robert, William, and John Smith, mentioned in the deeds of James and Mary Smith, other unidentified Smiths include Ida Smith, who married in 1860 as his second wife, Millicent's nephew William Boardman Avery, and a Robert Smith (perhaps the one mentioned in the deeds?) who married Millicent's cousin Emmeline Langdon.

Additionally, we find that the first settler in Verona, Oneida County, New York was a George A. Smith. Pomroy Jones, (Annals and Recollection of Oneida County, (Rome, NY: 1851) p. 662; Daniel E. Wager, Our County and its People: A Descriptive Work on Oneida County, New York, (Boston: 1896), p. 580; and Canfield and Clark, Things Worth Knowing About Oneida County, (Utica: 1902), p. 100)

Additions and corrections will be sincerely appreciated.
