Notes on Jacob Collins
Jacob Collins, son of John Collins and Hannah Cozad, was likely brought up a Baptist; for his mother's father was a Baptist minister, the Reverend Jacob Cozad.  In later life he became a Methodist, his wife Mary Ellsworth's father being a Methodist minister.

Jacob's parents married in Fayette County (now in Pennsylvania) when it was still a part of Monongalia County, Virginia.  They moved from the wilderness back to New Jersey where they had the first of their children.  Thus Jacob was born in Morris County, New Jersey.

The History of Harrison County [Virginia-West Virginia] by H. Haymond lists the following land purchases:

"July 1800 page 288 John & Hannah [Cozad] Collins to Jacob Collins for 105 pounds 132.5 acres west side of West Fork river adjoining John Ellsworth and Jacob Baumanner."

"15 Jun 1801 page 421 Jacob & Mary [Ellsworth] Collins to John Collins $80 22 acres West Fork River." [This John Collins was probably a brother]

"Sep 1802 page 151 to George Collins .01, 50 acres both sides of West Fork River
Sep 1802 page 151 to Jacob Collins .01, 50 acres both sides of West Fork River
Sep 1802 page 151 to John Collins Jr. .01, 50 acres both sides of West Fork River"

A History of Lewis County West Virginia by Edward C. Smith explains the above one-cent for fifty acres land deal.

"In order to bring about the settlement of this land as soon as possible and to encourage further settlements in the region round about his tracts, Colonel Jackson agreed to donate to some Irish settlers of the South Branch valley small tracts of land if they would make settlements here and stay until the settlement became permanent.  … The offer was accepted by several families."

"John Collins and his three sons, Jacob, Cornelius and Isaac, were the first permanent settlers in the district.  They brought all their worldly possessions to the upper West Fork on packhorses in the winter of 1797-98, and selected the broad bottom facing the rising sun…"  "The Collins were industrious and cleared a considerable portion of the land in the immediate vicinity of their homes.  They remained in their original location until after the formation of Lewis County when they sought a more favorable situation in the west. [Ohio]"

The settlement became known as the Collins Settlement, but is now called Walkersville, Lewis County, West Virginia.  Note that Smith names the three sons as Cornelius, Jacob and Isaac; yet the land record is for George, Jacob and John Jr.  George age 26-45, Jacob age 26-45 and John Jr. age 16-26 are listed one after the other on the same page on the 1810 census for Harrison County, Virginia (now Lewis County, West Virginia).  On another page are George age over 45, John age over 45 and Cornelius age 16-26 also listed one after the other. The three who bought the 50 acre tracts for one cent were the three listed together on the census as George, Jacob and John Jr.  The three names mentioned in Smith's book seem to be in error.

By the 1820 census Jacob Collins and family were already settled in Salem Township, Warren County, Ohio.  Daughter Hannah had married Edmund Collins there in 1819.  Jacob had to sign a consent paper, because she was under the age of consent.

The cemetery where Jacob was buried is far inside a bean field on the Ghiels farm in a grove of trees and overgrown with weeds and trees.  In 1996 I was unable to get permission from the farmer to cross his field to get to the cemetery, but there is a list of those buried there at the historic society in Lebanon.  Even the town of Rossburg has become a mere crossroad and no longer a town.  Supposedly the county was going to fix up the cemetery, but that would not solve the access problem.
