Jeremiah Haggerty

Notes on Jeremiah Haggerty:
Jeremiah Haggerty owned 147 acres in the extreme northern section of Farmington Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania near the towns of Crown and Vowinkle.  Nothing is known yet about his parents other than that his father was born in Ireland and his mother in Virginia according to census information.  Also according to the census he was probably born in 1826 although his gravestone at St. Mary's Cemetery in Crown gives his longevity as 1829-1881.  There is a huge gray granite marker with the name Haggerty and two smaller stones saying merely Father and Mother with the dates.  In 1997 Bernie Clark had their full names sand blasted into their stones.  To the left of Jeremiah's grave is another stone for Frederick born and died in 1882 after his father's death.  Jeremiah died intestate and with minor children. His only surviving son, Jerry, Jr., was only ten and not able to carry on the farming and timber cutting.  It was necessary to sell the farm at auction to pay the family debts.

Benjamin P. Norris says, "My great-grandfather James Hagerty ( 1843-1908) buried Jerry Haggerty and his children. They died during a diphtheria epidemic. "  Except for Frederick, who was born and died in 1882 there are no markers for the other children.  Two or three of them must have died during the epidemic.  James Hagerty was probably a cousin of Jeremiah Haggerty, but they spelled their names differently.  The original Irish name was Hegarty.

 Notes for Magdalena Bostaph Haggerty:

After the demise of Jeremiah Haggerty and the sale of the homestead Magdalena lived with her daughter Mary Ann Haggerty Kelly, son-in-law James Kelly and the Kelly children  in Kane, McKean County, PA until her death in 1901.  She was listed with them on the 1900 census as Lena Haggerty, M-in-Law, W [white], F [female], [birth] Oct 1835, [age] 64, W [widowed] S [single], mother of 13 children 7 living.  Three of the children's names were never on a census.  Thomas and Jane probably died young.  The informant mistakenly told the census enumerator that her father was born in Germany.  Her father, Andrew Bostaph, was born October 01, 1805 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  Her grandfather was born in Prussia and came to Pennsylvania in 1794.
