Notes for John Kuhn:

The Goshenhoppen Registers 1741-1819, page 116:  "At the head of the page that follows, marked in the register as page 263, is the record of the death 'in the Lord,' on february 14, 1751, of John Kuhn, carpenter, with whom Rev. Theodore Schneider, the founder of the Goshenhoppen missions, was wont to lodge.  The writing is in father Ritter's hand." He built a home at Cedar Creek in Macungi, Lower Macungi Township, Berks County, Pa. and worked as a carpenter building St. Paul's Chapel at Goshenhoppen. His house was used as a Catholic missionary stop or Mass house from 1742-1751.  His information but without his wife's surname is documented on pg. 495 of Catholic Trails West.  His wife's surname has not been confirmed, but her name was listed as Anna Barbara in the Goshenhoppen Registers.  He died intestate, and the estate was probated in Philadelphia Co., PA according to Catholic Trails West page 495. He was buried on the chapel grounds.  St. Paul's Chapel is now Sacred Heart Church, Bally, Washington Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Although there are several men listed as Johann or Hans Kuhn on the passenger lists, it is not likely that John Kuhn emigrated from Bavaria either 23 Sept 1741 on the ship Marlbourough or on 20 Nov 1741  on the Europa. This speculative information about his arrival in 1741 was taken from "Qualifications recorded at Philadelphia" quoted by Sister Mary Bernadette Joseph O'Loughlin, R.S.M. and Sister Mary Francis De Sales O'Loughlin, R.S.M.  who wrote a genealogy of Francis Burgoon and Colman O'Loughlin containing the Kuhn roots.  It is more likely that John Kuhn was in the Colonies at an earlier date, since he was already building the chapel at Goshenhoppen in 1741.  There were Kuhn and Schmidt surnames among the immigrants to New York in 1709 sponsored by Queen Ann.  Some of these immigrants moved to Pennsylvania seeking more religious freedom.

Notes for Anna Barbara ...

Anna was identified on pg. 3 of Goshenhoppen Registesrs 1741-1819 at the baptism of her granddaughter, Anna Barbara Kuhn in 1742, granddaughter A. Barbara Schmidt in 1744, and Anna Barbara Riffle in 1745.

Her death was taken from "Catholic Trails West" on pg. 495 where she and John were listed with their family.
