No 15 1784 July 17th appeared before the court for division for estate of Ibsker parish’s evaluators at 27th self-owned farms lot in Ibsker parish after very small proprietor Hans Nielsen, who has left behind a widow and two children, who were not of age, a son Hans Micheal Hansen, and a daughter Maren Kirstine Hansdaughter, the first 7 years of age and the other age 14, now in Copenhagen, for which the guardian farmer Peder Nielsen at 20th Vaarnede Farm in Ipsker parish were present.

The court took a look at poor estate and found that nothing was to be divided, as the circumstances were pitiful and poor, as the deceased as well as the widow had been going around begging.

The guardian the above-mentioned Peder Nielsen promised to stand sure against for what debts might be in the estate whether it concerned guardianship or otherwise or in this way the evaluation was concluded.

The widow can, even though no evaluation took place, stay in her little house with all her bits and pieces and the Court for Divisions and Estates and evaluators claimed nothing, so no evaluation took place, but this is alone written in the protocol to prove for time to come, that this has taken place.  To witness this, on my as well as on the behalf of the writer “Heilberg” [secretary].  Evaluators Jens Larsen, Morten Marchmann, the guardian and guarantor Peder Nielsen.

“From the first of January through May 15th 1872 a hundred and sixty five immigrants arrived in Colorado; most came directly from Denmark. Many of these people came to Longmont. These people from the community of Nexo, Bornholm in Denmark joined the Longmont Presbyterian church around the turn of the century.

Among those members appears the names of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Hansen”

“Matthias Diedrich (Matt) Hansen1863-1941 was born on the island of Bornholm, Denmark on Nov. 10, 1863.  At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a smith, and later became a journeyman.

He came to the U.S. at the age of 22, lived with an uncle in tr. Madison, IA. and worked in Geo. Parton’s smith shop.  [We have not yet discovered who this “uncle” was.]

In 1886, Hansen came to the St. Vrain Valley, where he worked on the railroad, and later as a farm hand.  In 1887, he started smithing in Longmont.

He married (Feb. 22, 1890) Marie Elene Andersen (b. Aug. 21, 1861), who came to Longmont from Bornholm in 1888 to live with her sister, Mrs. Fred Jacobsen.  Three daughters were born to the Hansens:  Ella, Aug. 11, 1891; Valborg, Oct. 6, 1894; Dora, June 6, 1897

In 1896 Hansen built his own smith shop.  He was a member of the I.O.F. and the A.O.U.W. and held offices in both organizations.  Mrs. Hansen was a member of the Eastern Star and active in the Presbyterian Church.  Matt Hansen died Feb. 8, 1927.  Mrs. Hansen died Jan 30, 1941.

Ella Hansen (Mrs. Elmer Bloom) still lives in the Hansen home at 213 Fourth Avenue.  She is the only descendent of the Hansen’s now residing in Longmont.  Valborg  (Mrs. George Mariner) lives at Limon, Colo; Dora (Mrs. Earl Garner), a citizen of Canada, lives at High River, Alberta.”

Since Karrebæk on Zealand [or Sealand] is located about two hundred miles from Bornholm, which is a very tiny island off the south the tip of Sweden, there was no possible way that Niels and Anine would have known each other before arriving in Longmont but it is not known if the marriage had been prearranged before Grandmother’s immigration or if the arrangements took place after she arrived in Longmont. Anine’s brother Matt probably made the marriage arrangements, which was a common European practice of the day.

When visiting the Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont we would often ask my father who those “other” Hansen’s were opposite the little pathway from Johanna Paulsen’s grave. His answer was simple and curt, “those are the rich Hansen’s.”  We did not know at that time that they were related but upon studying Walter’s baptismal certificate we found the name Marie Hansen, Marie was Matt’s wife and Walter’s godmother.

I don’t remember much about my grandparent’s as they were quite old by the time I came along; my grandfather was seventy-seven and my grandmother was sixty-five when I was born.  After my grandfather died, my grandmother went to live with her daughter my Aunt Ruby and her husband Clifford.
