MY DANISH LINES BY RICHARD HANSEN

ZEALAND, DENMARK

My heartfelt thanks go to Karen Reib and Hans Vindahl Pedersen who through their kind generosity searched the Danish Archives for all the information on my Danish born ancestors contained on this page.  Without their help I would not have known how to begin my ancestral search in Denmark.  By their invitations my wife and I visited Bornholm where they both live and I was able to walk the streets and see the sights that my ancestors experienced in their daily lives.  It was also with their help that I was able to find my ancestors on Zealand and visit the area where those ancestors attended church, married and baptized their children. It was a once in a lifetime trip but perhaps best of all we some good friends.

We have no clue as to why Hans and Johanna left the Forslev and Glumsø area, which is some distance from Karrebæk. Today it is probably about a 20 minute drive on good roads about 16 miles distance.

Johanna had a family but not much is known about any of them.  Son Niels, baptism records say she was of Saltohusene, which we believe to be the name of the house in which she lived.

Generation No. 2 was the first generation to immigrate to America.  Hans Poulsen probably died a short time before 1882 or 1883 as Johanna left Karrebæk, Sorø Sept. 18, 1883; her son’s had emigrated earlier in 1882. Most likely, they left their widowed mother in Denmark, until they had located in the Longmont area and could find a suitable home for her.

More About CHRISTINA HANSEN:

Christina and her husband Andrew typify the difficulties in Danish research.  She was baptized as Maren Kirstine and known in the U.S. as Christina.  Andrew was baptized as Anders N. Jensen but his name was changed upon entering the U. S. to Johnson.  It took the combined efforts of Linda with the American records and our friend Hans Pedersen in Denmark to identify each of them as correct.  When doing Scandinavian research this situation can be multiplied many times over, taking up much of ones research time.

More About ANDREW N. JOHNSON:

He was born Anders N. Jensen but upon emigration a clerk changed the spelling to Johnson.  This was a very common occurrence made by clerks not clearly understanding the name as pronounced by the non English-speaking emigrants.

More About RUBY HANSEN:
