BAKER FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

HUGH ALLEN RECORDS

As you will see below like his father before him, Hugh heavily invested in land. He was a respected man of some means as others came to him for loans, and he was able to accommodate them. It was an old custom that those who could perform the duties of small financial transactions or draw up legal papers for the convenience of the neighbors did so. It was considered a duty, which Hugh seemed to honor. They seemed to have all the necessary items for running the farm plus they had a few niceties, the wood clock, silver watch and special saddles for the women. I found it interesting that the woman’s saddle and tack were considered Hugh’s property and not his wife Anne’s.

From the inventory we know that he smoked a pipe and wore glasses. He was literate as he had 212 books in his home at the time of his death. He made his "mark" on his will that was dated 13 April 1816; but he could write [it was a common practice for one to make "his mark" rather than sign official documents. I have a copy of his signature that was on a document for the marriage of his daughter Anne to Hugh Moore.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bakerfamilylines/gallery/allen/hughallensignature.jpg
