1.  ROBERT BRIDGENS was born 1752 in Manchester, England, and died Bet. 1826 - 1828 in Lock Haven, Clinton Co, PA.  He married NANCY BENNETT June 06, 1789, daughter of WILLIAM BENNETT and ANN.  She was born Bet. 1762 - 1772, and died 1808.

I have not documented any of the information for the Robert Bridgens family.

much of this information came from:    David Wallace of Pa., who got it from Lola Wallace --- not sure now whether she was his mother or his aunt - she was working on the Bridgens genealogy in 1941.

Letter of Jan 2, 1941.  My dear Mrs. Wallace:  In answer to yours of Dec. 29. 

Robert Bridgens was born in Manchester, England 1752 and was brought to this country by agents of King George III to manufacture iron for the crown.  He operated an iron furnace near where Bloomfield is now located in Columbia County Pa.  When the American Revolution broke out the Colonial Army stopped the furnace as they were making iron for England.  He then went up the West Branch of the Susquahanna River to Youngwomanstown, this is while the Revolution was going on.  I do not know what year it was.  His oldest son Thomas was born at Hiners Run Aug 4 1790.

I have been exchanging information with several Bridgens researchers trying to learn more about Nancy Bennett Bridgens.  I am still in the process of exchanging info with them, but I think I have collected some good information on Nancy if she is the wife of Robert Bridgens of Northumberland (later Lycoming) Co., PA.  H. A. L. Bridgens, who researched the family in the 1940's, wrote a letter with information on the family that Dave Wallace used as a source that Nancy was the daughter of a Thomas Bennett*, but Dave has not been found other documentation for this - also H. A. L. Bridgens wrote that Robert's first son was named Thomas for Nancy's father Thomas Bennett, but there was also a Thomas Bridgens who died in Northumberland Co., PA in 1779 who was probably a close relation to Robert ie his brother or father, who could also be who the son was named for. 

Note: *This information is in error as the fathers names were transposed the father’s names which were actually Thomas Bridgens and William Bennett.

*Historical View of Clinton County, Pennsylvania by "D. S. Maynard" - 1875 Andrew Epple, by deed dated August 20, 1799, conveyed the same to Andrew Epple, Jr., who sold to Joseph Reed; the deed of conveyance, dated March 9th, 1802. On June 3d, 1805, Andrew Epple, Jr., conveyed the tract to John Philip De Haas. In May, 1810, De Haas sold the entire tract to John Quigley, by whom it was divided, and conveyed to different persons, his son Michael Quigley coming in possession of the larger portion, which he now holds, the balance of the original tract being principally owned at present by Robert Bridgens, Esc., and Hawley, Matthews & Quigley. While the "Young Womanstown farm" was in possession of Andrew Epple it was rented for a time by William Bennett who paid for the use thereof five pounds a year. It appears from a letter written in 1798, by Bennett to the owner of the land, that even at that early day there were from thirty to forty acres of the farm under cultivation. It was once owned by Mrs. T.J. Black, and leased by H.C. Stover, but is now kept by A.M. Marshall. There is a shoe-shop and blacksmith-shop in the village.  The railroad company has a good passenger and freight depot, and telegraph office. Good schools are in operation eight months in the year, and the inhabitants show evidences of intelligence beyond that possessed by people of many country places. Near the place resides Robert Bridgens, who was one of the first three commissioners of Clinton county. He is now seventy-six years old. Several fine residences have been built in the place within the past few years. Among them are those of 'Squire Quigley, Robert Bridgens, J. H. Bailey & Co., J. W. Crawford and A. J. Quigley.

Notes for ROSANNA RITCHIE:

In old Lock Haven there were at least two public cemeteries Old Lock Haven Cemetery and Great Island Presbyterian Cemetery. Both fell into disrepair and forced the relatives of the people interred there to move them from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Linns history of Centre and Clinton Counties has a small listing of old burials in the Great Island Cemetery. Among them was a Rozina Bridgens, wife of Thomas. died 3/2/1858 age 71. She is now in Highland Cemetery, a 15 to 18 foot obelisk marks the site, on this marker is also her husband Thomas Bridgens 8/1/1790-9/21/1876. Thomas may have been first buried in the old Great Island cemetery too and later moved, I cannot be sure. This obelisk is quite nice, and most of the markers removed from the G.I Cem. to Highland are of White marble, and are tablets. So it seems to me that this marker was made after the move, if the bodies were really moved. Most of the bodies and wooden caskets were beyond anything that could be relocated, so I understand that a small bit of dirt was transported to the new site.

In memory of William Bridgens who died at his home in Allison Twp., 11 Feb. 1886, I beg to give a short sketch of his life, which seems but meet for one who lived to old age and died honored and respected by all his neighbors. In what is now called Grugan Township he first saw the light of day, being the first born son of Thomas Bridgens late of LocK Haven, by his first wife, daughter of Henry VanGundy. William's mother dying when he was only two years old he was left to the care of his Grandmother, but in a short time she too went the way of all the earth. He was then cared for by his uncle, Alex Grugan, until eighteen years of age. His father having become a successful farmer desired his assistance. Well do I remember his grief and mortification when compelled by his father to leave the abode of his childhood, nor was the grief of those he left much less. From this on his occupation was that of farming in the summer and lumbering in the winter. The way men lumbered in those days was a hard and laborious business exposed to cold and rain, and when lumber was rafted to the tower markets the men were compelled to walk back. This was a killing task, as all who tried it know, and Mr. Bridgens being of weak constitution became a old man ere he reached middle life. On Jan 6, 1854 he married Miss Rose Burney, a valuable helpmate indeed, her leading traits being industry, perseverance and courage. As an assistant she never faltered. She still survives her husband. Four sons also are living, viz: Thomas, N.M.; W.H.; and J.R. Bridgens, all now grown to manhood. The funeral was largely attended by his friends and immediate neighbors. All expressed sympathy and many testified to his truthfulness, kindness and honesty. The services took place at his residence and were conducted by Rev. Nesbitt, who delivered a learned and pathetic discourse. His remains were conveyed to Highland cemetery and there deposited, the first of his family or kin in that city of the dead. Thus lived and passed away one of nature's nobleman. As a man he was unassuming; as a husband and father indulgent and kind; as my foster brother the guardian of my boyhood days. I bear cheerful testimony to his goodness and kindness of heart and in sorrow drop a tear for him who so oft bore me in his arms before my infant feet had learned to speed. In him the Democratic lose a strong adherent. Togethe

Hon. R. R. Bridgens Called to His Eternal Home This Morning

A Life of Honor and Usefulness

A Representative Citizen of Lock Haven Who Has Held Many Positions of Trust - His Death Was Not Unexpected But a Sad Blow to His Many Friends - Time of Funeral The announcement at an early hour this forenoon of the death of Hon. R. R. Bridgens was a shock to the community and a sad surprise to his most intimate friends.  It was generally known that his illness was of a serious nature, though but few knew that for several days past his condition was critical and his demise expected to occur at any hour.  At eight o'clock this morning the death angel called, and the spirit of R. R. Bridgens passed into the great beyond and an active life ended.

The deceased was one of Lock Haven's most prominent citizens, and had a large circle of acquaintances extending beyond the limits of the Commonwealth.  His life was a busy one.  He was born on the old Bridgens homestead farm, a short distance west of this city, on October 10, 1817.  His father and mother, Thomas and Rosana Bridgens, were among the earliest settlers in the county.  R. R. Bridgens passed his early years on the farm and at the age of nineteen, in partnership with James Welch, began the business of contractor, his first venture being the excavating of a section of the West Branch canal, near Ferney Run.  The contract was completed, but the completion of that part of the canal was abandoned shortly after.  From that period down to within a few years of his death Mr. Bridgens was continually interested in large business operations.  For many years he was engaged largely in lumbering and afterwards in railroad contracting.  From the first, success crowned his efforts and he became one of the substantial and influential men of the place.  In the year 1857 he was appointed to take charge of the canals in this section of the State, receiving his commission from the canal commissioners and holding it until the canals were sold.  His close attention to the details of that office and the duties connected with it gave entire satisfaction to all concerned.  His last railroad contract was in Columbia county, and since then he has lived in peaceful retirement, enjoying the comforts of his elegant residence in this city, and the company of his amiable wife, who survives him.  He was married in 1850 to Elizabeth Crawford, daughter of the late Allison Crawford.  In politics he belonged to the old Democratic school and was an active member of the party.  Mr. Bridgens, although an active politician, never craved for office, though he at one time, at the earnest solicitation of his friends, was Mayor of the City of Lock Haven for one term.  In manner he was unassuming; in his dealings with his fellow men, honest, and upright, and his undeviating integrity is worthy of emulation and commendation.  Two sisters, Mrs. M. S. Law, of this city, and Mrs. George I. Painter, of Muncy, and one brother Joseph Bridgens, of Bald Eagle Valley, survive him.  His illness began about six weeks ago, and it was only for a little more than two weeks that he was confined to his bed.  Up to last Saturday he was able to converse with his friends, but since then he failed rapidly, and as stated above his demise occurred at an early hour this forenoon.  The news of his death quickly spread throughout the city and there is expressions of deep regret that his life is ended.

The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon.  Funeral services will be conducted at the late residence of the deceased on West Main Street, at 2 o'clock, by Rev. Joseph Nesbitt.  Interment will be made in Highland Cemetery.

An article from the Williamsport Grit, March 24, 1883:

An Italian laborer attempted an outrage on a little daughter of Mr. Jos. Bridgens, who resides near Flemington, while returning home from the Normal school on Monday evening.  The little girl, who is about ten years of age, and her brother Harry, while on their road homeward, in passing through a piece of woods, back of the Normal, the man seized the girl and was about to make off with her, when her brother, who was some distance ahead, heard her cries and rushed back to see what the difficulty was, and the Italian, noticing his pursuer fled, doubtless saving the child from a dastardly outrage.  This fiend, in human form, should be hunted down like a rabid dog.

The subject of this sketch, Robert Bridgens, Esq., was born at Young Womanstown, Clinton (then Lycoming) Co., Pa., on June 14, 1796, where he died on the morning of the 31st day of May, 1882, having resided all his life at the place of his birth. Young Womanstown is a beautiful plat of level land situate on the West Branch of the Susquehanna, about twenty-five miles west of Lock Haven, immediately above the point where Young Woman's Creek empties into the river. The name of the locality is of Indian origin, and was once the seat of an Indian village, at which frequent gatherings of the aborigines occurred, the traditions of which are, however, clouded in more or less obscurity and doubt.

Mr. Bridgens belonged to a family of old settlers, nearly all of whom lived to reach an age far beyond the usual number of years accorded to man. He was by occupation a farmer during all his life, but was sometimes also largely engaged in the business of manufacturing, buying, and selling square timber. In 1838, when Muncy was the head of canal navigation, he, with others, had a steamboat built for the purpose of towing arks, etc., from that point to localities "up the river," and of this propeller he accepted the captaincy. The enterprise, however, did not prove a practical or remunerative one, and after a thorough trial was abandoned.

When Clinton County was formed in 1839, Mr. Bridgens was elected one of its first county commissioners. By the act of Assembly erecting the county it was provided that the person having the highest vote for commissioner should serve for three years, the second highest for two years, and the third highest for one year. The vote stood: for Hugh White, 560; for Robert Bridgens, 555; and for Anthony Kleckner, 540. The record declares these to have been the three highest in the vote, but does not give the vote cast for other candidates. In 1841, Mr. Bridgens was re-elected for a full term of three years by a vote of 725 to 640 for Robert McCormick, a worthy man, whose family connection in the new county was very large. This result clearly shows the public confidence in Mr. Bridgens at the time, for in addition to the fair personal standing and large family connection of his opponent in nearly every part of the county, Mr. Bridgens was forced to contend with the questions of the plans, location, cost, and building of the new court-house and jail, as well as other annoying issues that naturally accompany the organization of a new county. This was the last public office Mr. Bridgens filled, or was a candidate for, though he ever retained his personal influence, and it is believed never missed an election.

In 1846, Mr. Bridgens joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he remained an active, consistent, and leading member until death severed his connection with it. All his life he was distinguished for acts of benevolence, good will, and hospitality, and friends, acquaintances, and even strangers were always cordially received or kindly treated when they called upon visits or for food and shelter. Mr. Bridgens ever retained the friendship and respect of all who knew him, and he died without an enemy. He was a successful business man, a kind parent, a benevolent neighbor, an ardent friend, upright, truthful, generous, and an honest man. A widow and seven children survive him, the latter being J. Warren Bridgens, a prominent merchant of Lock Haven; John, Thomas, and Robert Bridgens, who follow the occupation of their father; Nancy, wife of John Quigley, of Young Womanstown; Melissa, wife of D.M. May, Esq., of Renovo; and Miss Sade Bridgens.

Captain Robert Bridgens whose birth dates back to the year 1796, and whose death occured in 1882, located here when quite a young man. He ran the first Steamboat that ever plied upon the waters of the West Branch. He was one of the Board Of Commissioners chosen at the first election, after the organization of Clinton County, and was a most respected and honored offical and citizen. The date of the election was the second Tuesday in October, of 1839.

Was born Sept., 23, 1838 at Youngwomanstown Creek Town.Clinton County, PA. His father was Robert Bridgens, one of the first Commissioners of Clinton County, Pa. J.W. recieved his education in the common schools. He remained on his fathers farm until 1862, when he came to Lock Haven, and went into the mercantile business as a partner of F.J Troxell. This partnership lasted for eight years. In 1868 the partnership was disolved and the stock divided. Mr. Bridgens then started a store on Clinton Avenue, where he remained for nearly five years. He then moved his present room on Main Street, where he has remained ever since. Mr. Bridgens is now serving his second term as School Director from the Third Ward of Lock Haven. He is also one of the Trustee's of the Lock Haven Normal School. He is ably assisted in the mercantile business by his son James F Bridgens.

A Girl Enveloped in Flames

Miss Nora Quinlan, who lives with the family of J. W. Bridgens, West Church Street, had a narrow escape last evening from being horribly burned.  The family were at supper, and the girl was about to light the hanging lamp in the sitting room.  A small table was covered with cloth with fringe around its edge.  Nora struck a match on the edge of the table, and immediately after the fringe ignited and was in flames.  The fire communicated to her clothing, and when her screams brought Mr. Bridgens and his son James into the room she was enveloped by the flames.  Mr. Bridgens gave his attention to the girl while his son extinguished the flames about the table.  The girls clothing was nearly all burned off her before Mr. Bridgens succeeded in extinguishing the flames, which was finally accomplished by wrapping an overcoat about her person.  Strange to say, she was not burned in the least, but Mr. Bridgens was badly burned on both hands.  Had Mr. Bridgens and his son not been present it is quite likely the girl would have been burned to death.

Carrie M. Bridgens, 326 W. Church Street, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 1947, at her home.

The daughter of the late James Warren and Mary Fearon Bridgens, pioneer settlers of Clinton county, she was a member of the Great Island Presbyterian Church.  Also Miss Bridgens was a member of the Lock Haven Civic Club, the Clinton County Historical Society, and the Delphian Society.

Mrs. Margaret M. May, wife of former sheriff D. M. May, died Wednesday night of heart disease, after a prolonged illness.  She was aged 60 years and is survived by her husband and five children:  Helen, Florence, Anna, and William of Renovo and Edwin of Chicago.  Mrs. May was a daughter of the late Robert Bridgens of North Bend, and was a sister of Associate Judge J. W. Bridgens of Lock Haven, Thomas Bridgens, Mrs. G. G. Reese, and Mrs. Nancy Quiggle of North Bend.  While Mrs. May had been indisposed for some time, she was able to be around the house until Wednesday afternoon.  She was a most estimable woman.  The funeral was held Saturday afternoon.  Services were held at the home on Third Street at 1:30 o'clock and burial was made at North Bend Cemetery.

Death at Ferney

Mrs. Sarah Grugan, an aged resident of Ferney, died at her home there Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock of the infirmities of old age.  About seven years ago Mrs. Grugan suffered a stroke of paralysis and had since been ailing and was compelled to take to her bed about a month ago.

She is survived by five sons and three daughters and the following brothers and sisters:  Robert Bridgens, this city;  Joseph Bridgens, Watsontown;  Samuel Bridgens, who resides in Iowa and Miss Louise Bridgens and Mrs. Nancy Reiter.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home at Ferney on Thursday morning.  Deceased had been a life long member of the Methodist church.

Funeral services for James Jefferson Grugan were conducted at the Grugan home, 29 East Bald Eagle Street, by the Rev. Curvin H. Stein, D.D.   Burial was made at Dunnstown.  Mr. Grugan, who died of a complication of ailments, was born at Whetham, 74 years ago.  He leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. G. M. Schwak of Williamsport, two sons:  Lloyd L. of Renovo, James L. of Sunbury, and one brother and two sisters.

Bettens officiating.  Mrs. Streck died at her home after a long illness.  Born at Ferney, she was a life-long resident of this section.  Six sons also survive: John, Grant, Howard and Walter, of Glen Union; Ray, of Flemington, and Brian, this city.

G. B. M. Farwell, of Grugan township, this morning brought the pelts of three wild cats and one gray fox to this city and collected bounty for the same at the commissioner's office.  The animals were killed during the month of December.

Obituary transcript from The Lock Haven Express, Tuesday, January 14, 1930:

G. B. M. Farwell died this morning at 12:-- o'clock at his home at Ferney after a long illness that had confined him to his bed since November 1.  Had he lived until January 22, he would have been 68 years of age.  He is survived by six sons and one daughter, Clyde and Theodore, of Glen Union; Robert, George, James, William and Helen, all of Ferney; also by three brothers; John, of this city; William, of Hyner; and Harry, of Beech Creek.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the North Bend Methodist church, Rev. Harry S. Ward officiating.  Burial will be made in the North Bend cemetery.

Mrs. Lois Bridgens, 80, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna Wheeler, 535 Seventh Avenue, Friday, Nov. 9, 1945, after a short illness

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wheeler; one son, William Bridgens of New York City; and four sisters, Mrs. O. E. Glise and Mrs. Howard McCloskey, both of Lock Haven; Mrs. Matilda Sank, of Renovo, and Mrs. Joseph Dietrick, of Erie; and two granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  The services will be in charge of the Rev. Leroy Brininger of St. Paul's Evangelical Church, assisted by Rev. R. W. Bevington.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Lock Haven.  Friends may call at the home Monday evening.

Obit Clinton County Times March 1923

John Thomas Bridgens of Mill Hall, died at his home, Wednesday evening at 11:15 , of a complications of diseases due to old age. He was 85 years of age and was one of the oldest residents of the town, in which he had resided for the past 30 years. Mr. Bridgens was a Veteran of the Civil War, and a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are, his wife, and the following children: Mrs. George Huff, of Niagra Falls: Joseph, of Lewistown: Mrs. A.T. Palmer, James, Mrs. Harry Shay, Muy Stevenson, and Mrs. Elmer Tevling, and all of Mill Hall. Funeral services will be held at the late residence Sunday afternoon at 2 O'clock, in charge of Rev. J. A. Agnew, interment will be made in Fearon Cemetery, near Beech Creek.

Letter from Dave Wallace [via Kari Northrup] re:Bridgens family line. John Thomas served with Co G of the 203rd PA volunteers Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Division 2nd brigade 10th AC (army corps?).

FROM PENSION RECORDS: Enrolled on 8/30/1864 at Liberty Twnshp. PA. Was assigned to the US Engineers, Dept. of VA, on and served until 6/22/1865. Mustered out with the rest of Co. G at Raleigh, NC, 6/1865.

May have fought in the battle for Fort Fisher on the NC coast at Cape Fear River near the tip of Cape Fear on 1/12/1865. Serving under Maj Gen Alfred H. Terry and Col John W. Moore, who was killed during the battle 1/14/1865. Also, under Lt Col Jonas Lyman, who killed a Confederate in hand to hand combat that was then shot through the heart himself. Was John T. there??

Fell ill at Chapen's Farm (?). Acquired deafness while serving in the service. Listed as 5'9" tall, fair complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes. Served as a Private while enlisted.

Also, occupation was a sawyer as stated in the pension record. After the war he was unable to saw so he did odd jobs in the lumber industry such as cooking in the logging shanties, and odd jobs. Diagnosed with deafness in r. ear and unable to work. Applied for pension 6/1/1882 with James Koons as his witness. Mary's brother?

Eva may be illegitimate daughter of Leola (Bridgens) Stevenson or Stephenson. Therefore, all siblings listed may actually be aunts & uncles. Will have to investigate this (reference to photograph!). Received photo of Bridgens family taken about 1886. Closer examination of the photo indicates that Eva R. appears older than Nacy Shay. Maybe Nancy Shea is daughter of Lola Stevenson?

1880 census; living with mother, who is widowed, in Lock Haven. George was aged 20y and was working in the saw mills. Moved to Reynoldsville in Jefferson County probably after their marriage in 1886. Specific date of this move is unknown.

Married in Eagleville PA in 8/18/1886. Received copy of marriage certificate from Lock Haven, PA. George was 27 when he married. Eva was 20y. Eva was from Blanchard and George was from Lock Haven as listed in a letter about the marriage license. George was listed as a laborer on the license. 8/14/1995 letter from Clinton Co. courthouse.

It is not known exactly when George & Eva moved to Austin, PA. It is indicated by Charles' death cert. that he was born in Austin in 1887. This is probably incorrect. Joseph Edward's obituary (Charles brother) stated that he was from Reynoldsville, PA. Joseph E. Huff was born in 1892; again as indicated by his obituary. This supports the notion they were in Reynoldsville, PA in 1892. These Huff's may have moved to Reynoldsville after their marriage (near Blanchard, PA ). Another piece of evidence would be in a deed transaction dated 4/12/1897 in which George & Eva were part of a group of John Kunes descendents that sold a small parcel of John Kunes' land (3 acres). John Kunes probably willed parcels to each Kunes sibling, including Mary. The indenture indicated George & Eva were then from Reynoldsville, Jefferson County, PA.

Note here that Sarah (Cowdrick) Huff was in Reynoldsville, PA when she died in 1891. This, assuming George was still with his mother (or she with him), would mean that it is likely that young Charles Huff would have known his grandmother for a time; he was aged 4 when she died.

1900 census; living on Foster St. in a rented home in Austin Borough, Potter County, PA with his children. George occupation listed as a day laborer. Charles T. listed also as a day laborer. George (a.39), Eva (a. 34), Charles T. (a.14), Alice (a.10), Edward (a.7), and Mildred (a.2). George has his father's birthplace as NJ.

Alice' husband George Beebe (a.25), who is residing with the Huff family (married in Coudersport, PA) was also a day laborer in the saw mill. George (a.50), Eva (a. 46), Charles T. (a.22), Alice (a.20), Edward (a.17), and Mildred (a.12). George has his father's birthplace as NJ.

George and family appear in the 1900 & 1910 census in Potter County PA. George probably went there from Reynoldsville, PA, for employment. At this time, Austin, PA had a booming lumber industry that started in the 1870's. Sometime after the Austin flood of 9/1911 they moved to Niagara Falls. Probably after the urging of Charles and after he had moved there himself for employment. He may have had aspirations of pursuing his baseball career.

1915 NYS Census: Living @ 1511 Cleveland Ave. George W. (a.55) & Eva (a.48). George was a laborer in a bookbindery (probably the Carbo Co.). They were living with Joseph E. (a.22) (who was working at Shredded Wheat) and Mildred I. who was a stitcher at the bookbindery. They lived next door to Edward & Ruffena Mehls.

George was probably born in Salladasburg or Larry's Creek, PA. Obtained a childhood photo of George, probably taken in late 1860's (abt 1867 or 1868). Also, another picture of George and sister Elizabeth and a mystery woman when they were much older.

Mill Hall Woman Dies

Funeral Services for Mrs. Albert F. Palmer Will be Conducted at the Home Monday Afternoon

Mill Hall, May 7 - Mrs. Martha Palmer, wife of Albert T. Palmer, of this place, died this morning at 12:15 o'clock in the Lock Haven Hospital.  Her death was due to complications after a major operation performed Wednesday.

Born in Blanchard, she was 58 years old, and a lifelong resident of this section.  She was a member of the Methodist Church and of all the church societies.  She also was a charter member of Camp No. 75 P. O. of A.

Besides her husband, she left five daughters:  Mrs. Joseph Torsell of this place; Mrs. Helen F. Kissinger, at home;  Mrs. Russel McIntire and Mrs. Harold L. Uewingham, of Holidaysburg, and Mrs. John Z. Frey of Lock Haven; also two brothers and three sisters, Joseph Bridgens of Lewistown, and James U. Bridgens, Mrs. Elmer Teveling, Mrs. Guy Stevenson and Mrs. Nancy S. Shay of Mill Hall, and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist Church in charge of the Rev. J. B. Mcloy.  Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery.

NORTH BEND

The accident which cased the death of Mr. Mayers, although reported in the Record, will loose (sic.) no interest to his friends by a brief repetition. From the best information I can get the casalty occurred as follows: Mr. Mayers went, on the 2nd of April, to assist his men in rafting square timber. The bank where they rolled the timber down to the water is quite steep and about ten or twelve feet high. From the foot of this steep bank to the water's edge the beach is of a moderate slope. A stick of timber which had been rolled down the bank had lodged on the beach. An other stick had lodged against this one, one endof which lay quartering up the bank and an other stick lay against the upper end of the one last named; and although Mr. M. had warned his men of the danger of going nder the bank to start the lower stick, yet from some strange impulse, when no one observed him save one, he walked into the fatal trap with cant hook in hand, and turned the lower stick, which also let the second one go, and then quicker than a flash of lightening the heavy oak stick of perhaps two tons weight went crashing down, rolling over and terribly crushing the body of the unfortunate man. He was picked up and carried to his home, where all that a loving family, kind friends and skillful physicians could do was done for him, but all could not avail to save his life. The golden bowl was broken, and on the morning of the 6th of April he died. His head was not injured and his mind was sound to the last. Opiates were administered to allay the terrible pain and the poor man slept away his few remaining hours, occasionally waking up, speaking a word to a friend or some loved one. Then instantly falling into sleep. So closed the earthly career of one whom we all respected. Mr. Mayers was of humble birth, and left an orphan and thrown upon his own resources at an early age. Being indstrious and well behaved he found a warm friend in the late Robert Bridgens who took so great an interest in the young man that after his majority they became partners in the purchase of timber lands and lumbering operations, and continued partners as long as they lived.

He was twice married. His first wife [Ellen Summerson] died some fifteen years ago. His last wife [Nancy Summerson] survives him. He has left six children, two sons and for daughters, the eldest of whom is married. When the writer first knew Martin, as he was familiarly called, which is now nearly thirty-two years, he was laying plans for his future home, and he secred it before he married. I merely mention this to show his business tact, but it was as kind and obliging neighbor, a courteous and agreeable gentleman, a warm personal friend that the writer knew him best. He was strictly honest and pright in all his dealings, a useful citizen, modest and unassuming, yet never shirking any work or responsibilities for the good of the township or his fellow citizens.

Is it to be wondered at that we all mourn this untimely death. Peace and rest to his immortal part.

Obituary Transcript from the Williamsport Grit, November 13, 1910:

William R. Bridgens, an employe of the Pennsylvania railroad, and a prominent member of the Prohibition party, died at the local hospital, Friday morning, from stomach trouble, aged 60 years.  He was a candidate for the legislature in the recent election, receiving 466 votes in the county.  He was a native of Muncy, learning the printing business there.  He came to Sunbury in 1877, as an operator in DK office, went from here to the Milton freight office for eight years in 1885, and returned to Sunbury in 1893, working at the shops.  He lived here ever since.  He was a member of the Evangelical church and was one of the most prominent members of the R. R. Y. M. C. A.  His greatest claim  to fame was the fact that he knew almost 3,000 verses of the Bible by heart and could tell the book and chapter of almost any verse that was read to him.  He is survived by a son and a daughter who reside at home.  The remains will be taken to Muncy, the native home of the deceased, on Sunday afternoon, and interment will be made there.
