CUNNINGHAM View from cemetery hill The “new” cemetery is
a resting place for owner’s that came sometime after the Indian
raids. The hill over looks some of
the Cunningham lands. There is not much left of the old cemetery. I found
only small pieces of broken stones, few were readable but none of those
had the Cunningham or Daughtery names on them. The area is overgrown with
grass and has not been maintained for a long time. It is my opinion that
this cemetery has seen the ravages of the years and sadly is not
redeemable. Children of JAMES CUNNINGHAM and MARGARET

died Bet. 1782 - 1789 in Fairfax County, VA. He married NANCY O'NEILL 1728. She was born in
Ireland. Notes for HUGH B. CUNNINGHAM: "Hugh, his brothers and their families,
immigrated to Fairfax County, Virginia, entering this country by the
Potomac River in 1752. The county was formed by the Fairfax family. Other
settlers in the area were the Culpeppers, the Arlingtons, and the
Spotswoods. Family lore notes that these early
families employed the Cunningham men as traders and
business emissaries in the pioneer trade. Robert Cunningham was a employee
of the Hudson Bay Company. The Cunninghams did not stay long as a
family unit in Colonial Virginia. By 1775, at the start of the Revolution,
they were scattered throughout the colony, most living on the fringes of
civilization, the frontier. The Cunninghams in Virginia were the
associates of many of the famous pioneer explorers in the late 1700's.
Nearly all the people that moved westward passed through part of Virginia
where they (the Cunninghams) were settling. Many of them were a part of
this pioneering and
exploration." Source: HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF

XVI [no date for this
source]. Hugh Cunningham and his family set sail
for Fairfax, VA. from Dublin, Ireland in 1752. These Virginia Cunninghams
were neighbors and friends of the Spotswood, Culpeper, Arlington,
Washington and Fairfax families of England, and were at times engaged by
them to aid in colonizing their vast land grants in Virginia. They were
also engaged in the fur and tobacco business on a large scale. One record
states that it was a Cunningham that selected the location for Romney, VA
recommending it to Lord Fairfax who laid the town out in 1762, setting
aside 100 half acer lots for the town. In 1790 there were at least 8
Cunningham families in Hapshire County, in and around Romney, and these
families owned about 40 buildings and 31 slaves. Adam Sr, lived in
Shanandoah in 1790, had 9 in his family and 2 slaves and 3
houses. Source:
Records of Augusta Co. VA. by
Chalkley There is some confusion with the Hugh that was
killed at Bryas Station in 1782 and this Hugh who was in Capt.
McCutchen's company Augusta Co. in 1783. Both served in the Rev. War but I
found that the information I
found is sometimes credited to the wrong Hugh Cunningham.

ELIZABETH HARRIS 1743 in Scotland or in Mayo County, Ireland in
1743. She was born in
Scotland. Notes for JOSEPH CUNNINGHAM: Twin Joseph and Elizabeth had 5 daughters.
Joseph was an English Officer and was sent
by the Government to Mayo County, Ireland and located at or near
Castlebar. He was in charge of Government business at Clew
Bay. Joseph and Elizabeth seem never to have
come to America to live, but in 1774, some ship records show that he and
his wife came to America to visit their relatives, the Harris’s, in
Philadelphia and their son, John Harris, who lived in the Red Stone
Country in West Augusta County, VA. They remained in this country for
about one year before returning
home. Children of JOSEPH CUNNINGHAM and ELIZABETH HARRIS

The home of John and Catherine built in
1772 is in livable condition. It has been occupied for 179 years. During
the Indian raids of 1777 it was used as a fort because it was so well
constructed. John died in this home in 1779 not far from Fairmont, W. Va.,
near Baxter. Source: Graves of Revolutionary
Patriots, Vol. .1 The Cunningham Cemetery is located on the
Manor farm on Little Paw Paw Creek about one mile above its mouth and on
the same farm now owned by David Dunmore Cunningham, a great-grandson and
third Cunningham to own the
farm. The cemetery was started in 1825 with the
body of Sarah Cunningham a seven year old
daughter. The monument erected has the original head
stone, size about 12"X18"X4", that is imbedded in the face of the
monument. The lettering and spelling, as it is on the headstone
is:
