THE DESCENDANTS OF JOSIAS FURMAN

GENERATION 1

1.  JOSIAS FURMAN was born April 22, 1621 in Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, England, and died 1709 in Newtown, Long Island, NY.  He is buried in Presbyterian Cemetery, Newtown, Long Island, N.Y.  He married (1) ALICE ANGELCHE BEERS 1649 in Newtown, Long Island, NY,.  She was born Abt. 1625, and died 1687 in Newtown, Long Island, NY.  He married (2) MARY STRICKLAND WEED 1693.  She was born Abt. 1625 in Stamford, CT, and died March 31, 1714 in Stamford, CT.

Notes for JOSIAS FURMAN:
Before 1700 the name was commonly spelled Firman.

He was a cabin boy aboard the Elizabeth, in the Winthrop Fleet.

He was probably a servant to Governor John Winthrop in the 1630's.

As written in "Colonial Families of the United States" he came from England with his father John, a brother and four sisters."  If this is true where were his other two siblings?  I think that John probably brought all eight children with him and an error in the book or on the passenger list made the count incorrect.

Josias with his brother John left Massachusetts in 1652 and settled in Hempstead, Long Island, NY  that same year.  At a later date they show up in Middleburgh,  (later the town name was changed to Newtown).

Newtown Records for 1657 Josias Forman kept "two cattell."

“The number of Akers of medowe given out in Alottments unto the partiklar In habitants of this towne of hempstead.

Aron forman hath fiftene Aker”s "

(I have not been able to identify this “Aron Forman”).

1657: "The number of every mans gattes that thy have at the necke."

"samivell Forman hath sixe gattes"  (yet another Furman that of whom I am not familiar as Josias’ son would have been much to young to have been a property owner).

Hempstead Records: 1659, March 24; Granted to Josias Forman the Walnut Hollow and the Cherry Tree Hollow, as a free gift for two years, for the help of him and his family.-Rec. A., 46.

Josiah Furman sold his lands to his brother-in-law, __ Beers, [probably Richard Beers who was married to his half sister Elizabeth] and moved to Hempstead, L. I.  later in 1664 he moved to Newtown, L. I., NY.
