conveying 200 a. Resurvey on Friends Advise to Lawrence Owen, for
100 pounds. FC Deeds M, f. 615
23 MAR 1771 Lawrence took Inventory of his brother
Edward Owen’s estate, Frederick Co., Maryland
2 SEP 1772 Lawrence Owen and Sarah, his wife, executed
a deed to John Stull conveying, for 30 pounds, 84 a. of the tract
called "Rubbish."
Event: Witness 24 NOV 1783 Will of Edmund Riggs,
Montgomery Co., MD.
The tract Resurvey on Timber Neck, patented to George
Cullum in 1773, lay on Bennett Creek in the area around present-day
Hyattstown, which would have been Linganore Hundred. Friends Advice lay on a
branch of Little Seneca Creek, northeast of present-day
Poolesville.
November 1774, Lawrence Owen executed a deed conveying
to Mary Owen, Robert Carlisle Owen, Edward Carlisle Owen and David
Owen, heirs of Edward Owen, Jr., deceased, for 100 acres of resurvey
on "Friends Advise," which Edward had paid for in his lifetime.
Sarah Owen, wife of Lawrence Owen, relinquished her dower right to
the land*. (Frederick Co. Deeds, folio
290)
The 1777 tax list for Montgomery County, which was a
head tax on white males over age 18 and slaves, male and female,
over age 18, listed:

4 taxables
John Owen Senior
3 taxables
Sugarloaf Hundred
Lawrence Owen
1 taxable
Sugarland Hundred
John Owen 1
taxable
Rock Creek Hundred
Robert Owen

At that time Montgomery County was divided into twelve
hundreds, rather than numbered election districts. Linganor Hundred lay in the
northwest corner of the county, and below it along the Frederick
County line lay Sugarloaf Hundred and then Sugarland Hundred. Upper Newfoundland Hundred
lay along the Patuxent River southeast of Linganore, with Rock Creek
Hundred just southeast of Upper
Newfoundland.
During the Revolutionary War, Maryland established a
militia of all able-bodied white males between the ages of 16 and 50
to serve as a home guard and to be called out if the British
threatened the area.
"The Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War" by S. Eugene
Clements and F. Edward Wright, lists in Montgomery
County:

These records indicate that there was only one
Lawrence Owen in Montgomery County, yet the 1783 assessment shows
two in Linganore Hundred.
Perhaps the following provides a clue to the
Lawrence/Laurence Owen count.
1780
Minister's returns list a marriage performed by

1783 Maryland tax assessment for Montgomery County
listed in Linganore Hundred:
On 15 October 1784, Laurence Owen sold to John
Belmear, for 275 pounds 15 shillings, 125 acres of Resurvey on
Timber Neck. No wife
was mentioned in the acknowledgement to the deed. (MC Deeds D, f.
204)
No Lawrence Owen is listed in the 1790 census in
Montgomery County.
Montgomery County 1793 tax assessments lists Edward
Owen, Mary Owen, and the heirs of Robert Owen with land and Hezekiah
Owen with personal property only, no
land.
In 1796 a case was filed in Circuit Court for
Montgomery County Sitting as a Court of Equity entitled James
Gordon, et al. v. Laurence Owen, et al. The index indicates that the
equity case involved the sale of the real estate of Samuel Hardy,
was decided during the November 1799 Term, and was recorded in the
1795-1801 Equity volume.
Th bill of complaint or other papers copied into the record
book would very probably have shown where Laurence Owen was living
at that time but, regrettably, the county's existing Equity volumes
begin in 1801.
Land records show a deed, dated 2 August 1800 from
Benjamin White Jones, sheriff, to Robert Furgusen which states that
judgment was obtained by James Gordon and other, surviving partners
of John Glassford & Co.,
Against:
Elias
Hardy Jesse
Philips and Mary his wife
Kinsey Hardy

County. The sheriff
seized a tract of land called Grandmothers Good Will, the property
of Samuel Hardy, which wwas sold at public sale to Robert Furgusson,
the highest bidder, for 6100 poiunds of tobacco. Grandmother Good Will had
been patented by James Grove in 1756, 60 acres which lay on the west
side of a branch of Broad Run.
(MC Deeds I, f. 223)
Broad Run lies west of present-day Poolesville and flow into
the Potomac River southwest of it.
