Appendix - MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS
77
Important Note:
The following records are presented for the convenience of Patterson researchers in general. However, researchers of “our” Peter Patterson line may want to make note of the several Peter Pattersons contained on this list. Also, researchers of “our” Peter Patterson line should take special notice of the Pattersons in West Pennsboro Twp., Cumberland Co., PA 1778-1785 because in West Pennsboro during this time perio d are also several Espys. The Espys of particular interest are Thomas, George and Josiah.
According to Espy genealogy, Josiah Espy m. Elizabeth Patterson (allegedly “our” Peter’s sister), and they had son George who then allegedly m. “our” Peter’s daughter Mary. Also, according to Espy genealogy, “our” Peter’s brother William had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Thomas Espy, said to be a “cousin.”
We find it hghly significant that the following Pattersons & Espys are in West Pennsboro:
1778 – James Paterson (note the spelling!); John & George “Aspy”
1779 – James, Robert, Josiah & John Patterson; Josiah & George Espy
1780 – James, Robert, Josiah & John Patterson; Josiah & John Espy
1781 – James, Robert, Josiah , John, John, & Wm. Patterson; John, Josiah &
George Espey
1782 – James, Robert, Josiah & John Patterson; [did not transcribe Espys]
1785 – Andrew & Robert Patterson; Obadiah Paterson; John, Thomas & George Espy
Then, in Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA in 1785 we find James Patterson (brother to
“our” Peter), John Patterson and William Patterson, as well as Thomas Espy. In other words, between 1782 and 1785 James, John & William Patterson leave Cumberland County and end up in Fayette County.
We believe the James and John Patterson in West Pennsboro, Cumberland Co. in 1782 are the same men as the James and John Patterson who appear in Franklin Twp., Fayette Co. in 1785.
Further, we believe the Robert Patterson in West Pennsboro, Cumberland Co. in 1782 is possibly the Robert Patterson (Peter’s brother) who is found in Rostraver Twp., Westmoreland Co. in 1783.
Finally, we think it interesting that also in West Pennsboro 1779-1782 is a Josiah Patterson. Given the Espy/Patterson connection, and given that there is a Josiah Espy who allegedly m. Elizabeth Patterson, surely this Josiah Patterson is related to our line.
At any rate, based on these tax records, we believe it is possible that James and Robert, “our” Peter’s brothers, removed from Lancaster (Dauphiin) Co. prior to 1779 and settled in West Pennsboro Twp., Cumberland Co. Meanwhile, “our” Peter, and probably his brother William, left Lancaster (Dauphin) Co.about the same time but proceeded to Westmoreland (Fayette) Co. Then, about 1782-1783, we believe brothers James and Robert left Cumberland Co. to join Peter and William.

Comments:
The Cumberland land records are included primarily because of the alliance between the Patterson and ESPY families. In 1780 Josiah “Espy” warranted 200 acres of land in West Pennsborough, Cumberland Co., PA (PA Archives, Series 3, Vol. XX) and in 1781, George, John and Josiah “Espey” warranted land in Cumberland Co.
A 1999 posting on pa-roots (by Patty Williams pattywms@aol.com) says Cumberland County probate records of a Samuel Patterson show children: James, John, Ann, Peter, William and Mary. “It is believed he [Samuel] resided in Mt. Joy Twp., Lancaster Co., and Fermaugh [sic] Twp., Juniata Co., PA.”
Futher information about a Peter Patterson in Juniata Co. comes from Kathy McConnell, who mailed this info 1 Dec 2000 to Paula Pitts pitts488@pdq.net. This information says that a Peter Patterson, whose father’s name was also Peter Patterson, [which we believe is incorrect] was b. in Juniata Co., m. Elizabeth Donelly and d. 1840 in Frenchcreek Twp., Mercer Co., PA. The children of Peter and Elizabeth (Donelly) Patterson were: Samuel (b. 4 July, 1813 in Venango Co.); Mitchell; William; Thompson (b. 1808); John (b. 1812); James D. (b. 1824; Ellen; Jane; Margaret (b. 1804); Mary; Ann (b. 1808 in Venango Co.); and Eliza (b. 17 Aug 1818 in Jackson Center, Mercer Co., PA).
