CHAPTER
II
WILIAM
PATTERSON
(son of
Thomas Patterson Sr.)
We have more information about William’s life than about the
lives of the other three known sons of Thomas Patterson, Sr. The
primary sources of information about William’s life are:
(1) Letter
written 1911 by William Patterson (great-grandson of the William who
is subject of this chapter) to Sarah Luella Patterson. (See
“Transcriptions.”)
(2) “A Sketch of
the Pattersons 1752-1907,” written by Rev. Thomas Patterson Proudfit
of Washington, PA, in 1908.
This brief paper is now on-line in the “Family History
Archives” of Brigham Young University’s digital library (www.lib.byu.edu/fhc).
This paper was microfilmed 10 Mar 1987 by the Church of the
Latter-Day Saints, and this microfilm Roll #XLIB7102-2399 is part of
the Salt Lake library collection. Aside from incorrect statements
about Thomas Sr.’s father, and about Thomas’ brothers, the data in
Rev. Proudfit’s paper is reliable. Please note that all of Rev.
Proudfits statements about being related to the Bonapartes should be
disregarded. Rev. Proudfit’s father, William Proudfit, was first
cousin to the William Patterson who wrote the letter referenced in
(1) above. Every researcher of this line after 1908 has referred
to this source, or has obviously read it, which accounts for the
perpetuated errors about the name of Thomas Sr.’s father, about the
names of Thomas Sr.’s brothers.
*
(3) “Memoirs of
David Hunter Patterson” was written in 1929. David Hunter Patterson
was another great-grandson of the William who is the subject of this
chapter. David Hunter Patterson’s father, William, was first cousin
to the William who wrote the letter referenced in (1) above. David
Hunter was obviously in contact with with Rev. Proudfit of (2)
above, because many (incorrect) statements in “Memoirs” about the
earliest generation are worded very nearly the same as in Rev.
Proudfit’s paper. “Memoirs” can be found on-line at sites.rootsweb.com/~pafulton/pathist/toc.htm.
(4) Richard Duane Nelson of Mesa, AZ spent many years
of research on this
Patterson line. In 2004 I was corresponding with Richard’s
wife, Judy, who
generously sent me several hundred pages of her husband’s
research. Richard
Nelson allegedly descends from William Patterson “born about
1706 in of
Rossgarrow, Fanand [should be “Fanad”], Donegal, Ulster
Ireland” who “married
Elizabeth Peoples.” William and Elizabeth (Peoples) Patterson
allegedly had son
Robert, from whom Mr. Nelson allegedly descends; and they
also most definitely had
son William (1752-1835) whose famous daughter, Elizabeth (“Betsy”)
married Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother. Unfortunately
for Mr. Nelson, one
of his sources of information was “A Sketch of the Pattersons”—see
(2)
above—in which it is stated without proof that William of
Baltimore (born 1752) and
Thomas Patterson Sr. (born 1724) were brothers. Because Richard
Nelson
was then led to believe that Thomas Patterson Sr. of
Washington Twp., Fayette
*I have learned
how these errors came about, but it’s too complicated to go into
here. See the chapter
of this paper, entitled “Sorting out the
Pattersons.”)
21
Co. was the brother of his direct ancestor, he
intensively researched the line of Thomas Patterson Sr. His research was
prodigious.
For example, Mr. Nelson’s typed chapter on the life and
descendants of William Patterson, Thomas Sr.’s son, is 58 pages
long!! Mr. Nelson
appears to have done a very thorough job researching the men he
thought were the sons of William and Elizabeth (Peoples)
Patterson—among whom, he believed, was Thomas Patterson Sr. of
Washington, Fayette Co., PA. The irony of it all is that neither I
nor Mr. Nelson appear, after all, to be directly related to Thomas
Patterson Sr.--though we appear to be the two researchers who have
done the most serious research on Thomas Sr.’s line!
(5) “The
Patterson & Pattison Family Association,” Book 2, 1964 (a
compilation of submissions from many people concerning their
Patterson ancestors); pp. 94-95 concern William, son of Thomas
Sr. This material was
submitted by Mrs. Chalon T. Land of Enfiled, Illinois, in 1963. (See
full transcription of these pages in “Transcriptions”
section.)
(6) Register
of Marriages and Baptisms Performed by Rev. John Cuthbertson
1751-1791, ed. by S. Helen Fields; originally published 1934 in
Washington, D.C., and reprinted 2001 by Heritage Books, Bowie,
MD.
(7) “Odenkirk
Family History” on-line at www.odenkirk.com
contains some info about William’s descendants not found
elsewhere. However,
some of this info is incorrect—especially regarding the earliest
generations (Thomas Sr., for example).
The Life
& Descendants of William Patterson, son of Thomas
Sr.
Sources 1-5 above agree that William Patterson was
born in 1749. Source (5) above supplies states William’s exact birth
date: 12 June 1749, and this agrees with the birth date on William’s
tombstone at Big Spring Cemetery, Fulton Co., PA, according to the
transcription of Fulton Co. burials available on-line at www.fultonhistory.org.
The location of William’s birth as stated in Mr. Nelson’s paper is
York Co., PA—another fact not found in any other source. It appears that Mr. Nelson
got the information that William was born in York Co. from “From Thomas Patterson Sr., a
Patriot of the American Revolution to Newell M. Adams, a Veteran of
World War II” by Ann Newby Adams, privately published 1981,
Daytona Beach, FLA, a copy of which Mr. Nelson found at the Salt
Lake Library).* Though I have not seen
the source cited by Mr. Nelson, I do not think it possible to state
with certainty exactly where William was born. For one thing, the
emigration date of William’s father is not known, but the most
reliable source I’ve found states that Thomas Sr. emigrated about
1750. If the emigration year was, indeed, 1750, then William would
probably have been born in Ireland (or, possibly, Scotland).** Or, if by chance William’s father
emigrated prior to 1749,
then William was probably born in Lancaster (not York) Co., PA, for
that is where he was baptized. It
does not appear that any previous researchers had
access to Rev. Cuthbertson’s journal—
*See my comments
about this source in Thomas Sr.’s
chapter.
**
Though several
sources state that Thomas Sr. was a native of Ireland (see Thomas
Sr.’s chapter), I find it interesting that, in at least once source,
his son, William, was described as a “native of Scotland”! This info was contained in
an Aug 2005 post in the “Bedford Biographies” section of PA-Roots’
Bedford Co. site. (Fulton Co. was formed from Bedford in
1850.)

source (6) above—and this must have seriously hampered
their research. (In one instance a researcher does refer to Rev.
Cuthbertson marrying William and Jane Morrow, but in this reference
the date given is wrong, which leads me to believe that the
researcher was using verbal information, and did not actually have
Cuthbertson’s journal in-hand.)
William was baptized 17 Dec 1751 at the Muddy Run
meetinghouse in Martic Twp., Lancaster Co., PA by the Covenanter
minister Rev. John Cuthbertson. William and his brother,
John, were baptized on the same day (though I sincerely doubt that
they
were twins).
Rev. Cuthbertson was the first Covenanter minister in
America; he did not arrive until August of 1751, and Rev.
Cuthbertson’s first visit to the area of Martic Twp. wasn’t until
December of that year. As I wrote in the preceding chapter, I
believe that Thomas Sr. preferred to wait for the minister of his
own denomination to baptize his children, though there were several
Presbyterian ministers living conveniently nearby, and though that
meant that Thomas had to wait several years for his sons to be
baptized. William was not baptized until he was about two and a half
years old.
William’s boyhood was undoubtedly filled with
uncertainty and fear, considering that the area where his family
lived in Lancaster County suffered many Indian attacks. The very
meetinghouse where William was baptized in 1751 is said to have been
“burned by marauding Indians” (see Thomas’ chapter), sometime in the
mid-to-late 1750’s.
When William was about 13-14 years old, his father
crossed the Susquehanna River and settled for a time in the area
that today is in the eastern part of Adams Co., PA—but which was then part of York
County. (Perhaps this
is the origin of the belief that William was born in York Co.,
PA.) It is very
possible that William met his future wife, Jane Morrow (a/k/a
Murray) as a young teenager, because the area where his father was
living (based on baptism records of Thomas’ children) was the same
area where Jeremiah Morrow, Jane’s father, had settled. Rev.
Cuthbertson ordained Jeremiah Morrow as one of the first elders in
the Marsh Creek Covenanter church (in present-day Adams Co.); thus
William and Jane Morrow undoubtedly would have had contact with each
other at the Marsh Creek meetinghouse.
William married Jane Morrow --“Jean Murray” in
Cuthbertson’s records--on 24 August 1773. Jane was born 7 Sept 1750
“near Gettysburg, PA,” and she died 5 Nov 1832 near McConnellsburg.
Rev. Cuthbertson performed the marriage ceremony at the Marsh Creek
meetinghouse. The “Patterson & Pattison” publication, Book 2, p.
94, tells us that “the residence of William Patterson is given as
Waynesboro [Franklin Co.] at the time of his marriage.” No source for this
information is given; future researchers may wish to contact the
Waynesboro Historical Society (www.waynesborohistory.com) and ask if there are any records linking Thomas Sr.
or his son, William, to this location.
What we do know is that William owned land, by 1773,
in what was then Ayr Twp., Bedford Co. [now Fulton], PA. Whether he
actually lived there is not known. It may be that William
purchased his own land in preparation of his upcoming marriage. William is listed as
“single” on this 1773 tax list, so this tax list must have been
prepared just prior to his marriage. (PA Archives, Series 3, Vol.
XXII, p. 3)
Curiously, William is not listed on the 1774, 1775 or
1776 Ayr Twp. tax list, but re-appears on the 1779 list. * (Ibid, p. 179) On subsequent lists, in
1783 and 1784, William is listed. (Ibid, p. 241, 308)
*See Chapter III,
p. 38, of this paper, in which I theorize that William and his
brother, John, were living by 1778, and until about 1779-1780, in
Cumberland Co., PA..
23
When the Revolutionary War broke out, William was
twenty-seven years old, and was married with one small child--Sarah,
or “Sally,” born 22 Sept 1774. Another
baby was on the way—Jeremiah, who was born 23 July
1776. Specific information regarding William Patterson’s
revolutionary service is given in “From Thomas Patterson Sr….to
Newell M. Adams a Veteran of World War II,” by Ann Newby Adams
(privately published in Daytona Beach, Florida, 1981): “…he served
as an Ensign in Captain William Findley’s Company, Colonel Abraham
Smythe’s battalion.” [Abraham Smith commanded the 8th
Battalion of Cumberland Co., PA Militia; he was from Antrim,
Cumberland Co. and should not be confused with the Captain Abraham
Smith said to be from Lurgan Twp., “just north of the Franklin
County line.” (History of
Franklin Co., PA, Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co., 1887, Part
II, Chapter II) ] David Hunter
Patterson wrote (Chapter III of his “Memoirs”) that his
great-grandfather, William, was “a sergeant…at Valley Forge with
General George Washington.”
David Hunter Patterson also writes in Chapter III that his
son, William Morrow Patterson, was named after William, the subject
of our chapter here; also that his son William Morrow was (in 1929)
in possession of William’s “Revolutionary sword.”
In his later years, William was known as “Col. Patterson,”
because he was appointed Colonel of the local militia at the
conclusion of the Revolutionary War. Rev. Proudfit writes that
William “was fully six feet high, was a soldier in the Rev. War, was
a member of Congress [representative to the State legislature in
1794, per “Memoirs”], & by invitation dined once with the Pres.
Washington*… He was an
elder in the church & justice of the peace…He was a blacksmith
& later he was a prosperous farmer & gave a farm to each of
his children….”
William and Jane (Morrow) Patterson had eight children. Most
sources, including “Memoirs,” mention only seven children, but
source (2) above shows Susan—and supplies her birth date—and says
she “died young,” which explains why she was not mentioned in the
other sources. William and his wife Jane remained in the area of
McConnellsburg until their deaths. Their children were:

known descendants of the above children is given at the end of this
chapter.)
William died 18 May 1846; his wife, Jane, died 5 Nov 1832.
They are buried in Big Spring Cemetery in Fulton Co., PA.
NOTE: To my
knowledge, the “expert” on this line of Col. William Patterson, son
of Thomas Sr. of Washington Twp., Fayette Co., PA, is direct
descendant William (“Bill”) Remington Patterson. ([email protected])
He is the host for the Fulton Co. PA member of the USGenWeb and
PAGenWeb sites. He likely has much more information on William than
I’ve presented in this chapter.

I.
SARAH “SALLY”
PATTERSON b. 22 Sept 1774; d. 8 Feb 1842 in New Concord,
Muskingum Co., OH. (My note: Sarah’s father,
William, refers to his daughter, Sarah, in his will, which was
recorded & proved in 1846.
William obviously wrote his will sometime prior to 1842, or
his daughter Sarah would surely have been listed as
“deceased.”)
Sarah married in June 1798, near McConnellsburg, Rev.
David Proudfit (a/k/a “Proudfoot”), son of Andrew and Sarah
(Wallace) Proudfit.
Sarah’s father, William gave her, as a wedding present, a
“little slave girl” who lived with the family for four generations.
About the time of their marriage, Rev. Proudfit was “called” to the
(Covenanter) congregation at Laurel Hill in Franklin Co., PA. (See Franklin Ellis’ History
of Fayette Co., PA; Philadelphia: L.H. Everts & Co., 1882, p.
560.) Franklin Ellis writes of Rev. ‘Proudfoot’: “He came
with his parents from Scotland in 1754, and in 1788 entered college
at Gettysburg, studied theology under Rev. John Jamison, and in 1796
was licensed to preach. He labored at Laurel Hill, East Liberty, and
Dunlap’s Creek from 1798 to the spring of 1824, and after twenty-six
years of continuous service was released. He moved then to Ohio,
where he died in 1830.”
Rev. David & Sally (Patterson) Proudfit removed to
Guernsey Co., OH about 1824. (Their arrival date in Guernsey
Co. was found on-line at genealogy.com
in “Local & Family Histories database, in History of
Gallatin, Saline, Hamilton, Franklin & Williamson Counties,

Mercersburg, Franklin Co., PA, Mary McFarland in Upper West
Conococheague Presbyterian Church (she b. 20 Aug 1775 in Peters,
Cumberland Co., PA, dau of James & Mary (Campbell) McFarland per ancestry.com info of Gary
Morris); according to the 22 Mar 1911 letter of William
Patterson to Sarah Luella Patterson (see “Transcriptions”
section), Jeremiah “went west.” Jeremiah was not mentioned in
the will of his father because he died before his father wrote his
will. Info
gathered by Sarah Luella Patterson shows that Jeremiah settled “near
New Concord [Muskingum Co.], Ohio.” Undocumented internet info
shows he had children Jesse, John & Mary.
