This Bible was owned by Samuel M. Breese and his wife
Eliza Donaldson. Their daughter Rebecca Emily Breese (b. 1858)
married
Charles Edward Thomas (b. 1850 in Ohio). The Bible was passed down to
Rebecca, and then to her son
Eldred Leroy Thomas - my great grandfather.
Between the Old and New Testaments is a section of pages for keeping
family records. Below you'll find thumbnails of these pages and commentary on the contents. Click on the images to enlarge

different scripts here. I am not sure which belongs to whom. Someone
(I think my grandmother - though I'll have to double check with her)
has made notes along the margins explaining the relationship of the
different family members. Some of these may have been cut off in the
scan, so see the transcription page for more details. |

Between the pages . . . here are some things I found between the
pages of the family Bible . . . some of them are interesting mainly
because of the handwritten notes and messages on them. . . other
things I just thought were neat. There were also several flowers
pressed between the pages of the Bible which I did not scan.

Bible Inserts
Clockwise from upper left corner . . .Passage
References - The long strip of paper arranged vertically appears
to have been snipped from some sort of newsprint, onto which someone
has jotted down some verse references: Ezekiel Chapter 18
v. 4 / Romans Chapter 1 v. 18-32 & Chapter 10 v. 12, 13, 14 &
Chapter 2 v. 12. This was found between pages 704 and 705 (Romans
18)
Manasa - A skinny strip of paper bears the
name "manasa." On the back (not shown) is a portion of an
advertisement to "cure constipation" This was found between pages
426 and 427. (II Chronicles 33-34)
Recipe square - Below the skinny strip, the
square scrap was written on blue-lined paper rather than newsprint. It
was apparently torn from a handwritten recipe, though all that is
legible now is "bake" and "eggs" It was found between pages 194 and
195 (Deut. 29-30)
Photograph - I'm actually not sure if this is
really a photograph. The paper is thick like cardstock, but something
about the printing is a little off, and it's not very glossy. The
photo was tucked between pages 198 and 199 (Deut. 33)
Passage References - Below the photograph is
another entry on blue-lined paper, this one about the size of an index
card. The references are for II Peter 2:15 (with a note "Balem the son
of Bosor") and II Peter 3:16 (with a note "Paul to Titus, v. 12 the
Cretians") This was found between pages 878 and 879 (Luke 23).
Father - A gold embossed cutout of the word
"Father." Found between pages 318 and 319 (I Kings 12-13)
He That Over Cometh - The strip of paper at
the bottom of the page bears the words "he that over Cometh" Found
between pages 1028 and 1029 (Revelation 2)

More Inserts
Clockwise from upper left corner . . .
*see section below for the reverse side of these
insertsPassage References - The
rectangle in the upper left corner contains three passage references:
Mark 9 (with a note "he that is against"), Luke 6:24 & Romans 1:14. On
the reverse side is an advertisement for meetings and services at the
Third Presbyterian Church. This was found between pages 946 and 947
(Romans 9, 10)
Memoranda - This square of paper (written on
the back of some sort of ad for "Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative
Pellets") contains a recipe of sorts for some sort of medicine.
Found between pages 100 and 101 (Leviticus 9, 10)
Paper Doll Clothes - In the middle of the
page are three tiny paper doll accessories - a brown hat, red suitcase
or lunchbox, and a white glove. Found between pages 352 and 353 (II
Kings 11, 12)
Liniment Ads - In the bottom right corner of
the page are two paper scraps ripped apparently from ads discussing
the healing powers of liniment. Found between pages 762 and
763 (Amos)
Riddle -The thin strip of paper contains a
riddle: "When does a member of Congress display the most physical
strength? - When he moves the house. This was found between pages
478 and 479 (Job 28 - 30)
Golden Text -"The sword of the Lord and of
Gideon. Judg. 7:20." This was found between pages 864 and 865 (Luke
11)

Cocoanut Candies
Found between pages 468 and 469 (Job 10-12),
was this ad/recipe book for "Cocoanut Candies" I'm not quite sure what
"Cocoanut" refers to. . . chocolate (cocoa), coconut, or something
entirely different. Apparently back then, sweet sugar-loaded candies
were "wholesome" ! |

The Answers to Some
Common Questions About The Church
A pamphlet from an Episcopalian Church. See the next three
sections below.Bessie L. Breese
I'm not sure what exactly this card signifies. There is no Bessie
Breese listed in the family Bible. However, one researcher found
census records listing Timothy Lee Breese and his wife Abbie and
daughter Bessie in the 1880 census of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. We are not
certain at this point if this is the Timothy Breese connected to this
family, but it seems likely.
I should also note, along these lines, that in the family Bible, one
of the paper scraps marking various pages was snipped from an envelope
postmarked Ft. Wayne. This doesn't prove a connection, but makes one
more probable.
