Death from Small Pox --
With pain, surprise and sorrow, we are compelled to chronicle the death of Prof. Thomas H. Reifsnyder, of Churchtown, from that loathsome and fatal disease, smallpox. He lately attended the Reading market and there contracted the disease, from which he died on Thursday morning and was buried in the afternoon by undertaker Weaver, of Churchtown, at Centre Church, without any ceremonies.

Mr. Reifsnyder was a man that stood as a prominent and shining light in this world, before all who came in contact with him. He was known throughout the eastern end of the county for his moral and good influence that he exerted in all spheres of life; whether in church, in the school room, or on the farm, he was always, the same, a model for others to copy. He was a devout member of the Reformed (Center) Church, and the leading member of the Sunday school. Many were the lessons of Holy Writ that he taught there to the young mind in whose estimation he stood high as a Christian and scholar and who now mourn his untimely death in the prime of life, and yet, cut down by a contagious disease, it made it impossible to pay due respect and honor to his remains. For a number of years he had been engaged in teaching school, and being very successful, he became principal of the Churchtown Academy, where he taught a long time, and many are living to-day who can testify as being once his students, and the kindness and instruction which they received during their school days, he being always willing to solve and explain all knotty and difficult questions.

May his good deeds, his noble acts and his moral influence that he left behind, live forever as the proudest monument ever erected in memory of one who is no more. A wife and three children, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement, are left of the once happy household to mourn the death of a husband and father.
