MARY ANN (HART) MULLINS

Mary Ann Hart, daughter of Derrel J. & Rachel (Morris) Hart, was born 29 August 1841 and died 2 December 1931 in Bedford County TN. Mary Ann spent her entire life in the community, near Mt. Hermon TN, where she was born.

Sometime before 1860, Mary Ann Hart became the wife of Richard G. Mullins, Jr., the son of Richard & Mary (Rodgers) Hullins, Sr, born December 24, 1838 and died February 9, 1912. They would become the parents of Molly, Hulda, William, James and Sam Mullins who all grew to be fine upstanding adults.

In 1860 the census shows Richard and Mary living in the 22nd District probably newly married, without children. They were both listed as members of the Mt. Hermon Church.

After the death of Derrel Hart, father of Mary, Richard and Mary purchased 78 acres of the Hart land. This land was deeded to them by the heirs of the late D.J. Hart, deceased, dated January 26, 1878. By 1885 they owned 135 acres of land.

Mary Ann was left a widow in 1912 and apparently never remarried. Her youngest son Sam and his wife, Lillie, lived in a nearby house on the same far. Sam and his wife took care of Mary Ann through her last years. It is said that she was very fond of Squirrel Soup. During her last illness she expressed a desire for squirrel soup. Robert L. Patterson, a descendant and then 15 years of age, remembers going into the woods with his grandfather's shotgun and killing a squirrel and taking it to Lillie to make sourp for Aunt Mary Ann. Robert also remembers that sam worried that his mother would freeze to death, as she had grown very frail. Sam was constantly putting wood on the fire and adding a quilt to the cover on her bed at night.
