Keith Roussel, the grandson of the late Starlus & Lizzie (Grampp) Hart & the son of Marie Roussel & the late Kenneth K. Roussel wrote the following about Southeast Missouri where he was born & grew up as a young man.

By Keith Roussel Raincrow

The hot afternoon thunderclouds, and the breeze, bring notes form him in the trees, on this river, where catfish are found,

Whithin the sound of his call, leaving all who hear it aware, that he is no weatherman,

While he can be the singer of short monotones, the rain does not always heed his song,

The old women chopping cotton called him raincrow, or maybe the Chickasaws named him in their tounge, long before the white man came to the black swamps of the Castor and St. Francis,

Maybe, so long as his calls are heard in the long light of late afternoon, this yellow-billed citizen of summer will tease us with promises of rains to still the dusty roads, so near to yesterday...(c) kkr 6/23/89

Will I be the only one to mourn the great swamp’s passing, among the cypress and pin oak, where the delta of this river begins,

Will I be the last to sit in this shade and ponder the beginnings, and endings this water has passed, soaking roots older than mortals still here wandering,

Will I be the last to mourn the great swamp’s passing, as I watch the Wahite flow, where the willow and cane still grow, washed in waters from the rocky hills and gravel ridges,

This land, once owned by the black panther, wild pig, and cottonmouth, that has gone to farms to feed the hungry, and the fat, giving life to bellies far from these places,

Will I be the first to cry on a summer afternoon, when the sounds of the raincrow fill my memories, from the tall cottonwoods along the Bellefountaine bottoms.

Will I be the last to want to hear, this repertoire of longing, songs and notes reluctant to leave the air, to fall on my mind in the warm afternoon,

Will I always want to hear his calls to me, from where the low spot at Red Onion rolls off into Arkansas, that yellow-billed work of the Almighty, cracking the humid quiet with an imponderable medley,

From the sloughs and bottoms where he sings of his dread of what may one day be, are remembered today, by me, so well,

There are those in my world who have not the aural image of his soulful cry, placed as is mine, in the time and places where he is heard, maybe for the last time, someday,

They do not hail from the southeast corner of Show-me, they live within themselves, although there is body, they will never be filled with old times, with hauntings of wildness and calm, like I feel this time, from home ....(C) kkr 6/19/90

Richard (Dick) Hart was admitted to the Southeast Missouri Hospital on Sept. 21 with a heart attack & had to stay a week. The Doctor’s put in 3 Stents & a Pacemaker. Dick seems to be doing good & is taking re-hab three times per week.

Elsie died in either Oct or Nov 1910. Uncle Star or Uncle Velt told me that Elsie die at her parent's home in Broughton, Hamilton CO. IL? Elsie was married to Noah Conway Melton first & they had one daughter, Martha (Mattie) Melton, born 7 Jan 1901 in White CO, IL & she married Sherman Elder. Sherman died in 1932 & is buried at the Hickory Hill Cem, Broughton, Hamilton CO, IL. Marr: 12 Nov 1899, White Co, IL

Children:

Martha (Mattie) (1901-) Martha (Mattie) MELTON

Birth: 7 Jan 1901, White Co, IL

Mattie was a Nurse's helper & Guard at the Kankakee Prison when she was 18 to 25 years of age. This would have been sometime between 1919 to 1925.

Uncle Star Hart told me that Martha came to see him in the late 1950’s when he was living in Dade City, Florida, but he was not at home & she left a note on the door saying that she had been there, & would be in touch with him later. He never did hear from her again.

Leroy Dees of Valier, IL wrote me in Oct 2002 & told me that Mattie (Melton) Elder’s half sister Maggie Nelson who married Randall Hicks got a divorce & remarried & moved to Florida in the late 1940’s.

Questions?

Could Maggie have moved to the Dade City area to be close to her half sister Mattie (Melton) Elder?

Did Mattie remary after Sherman Elder died in 1934?

Spouse: Sherman ELDER
Birth: ca 1899

Sherman was supposed to have been a Barber in Eldorado, IL when he & Mattie were living there?

Burial: Hickory Hill Cem., Jefferson Co., IL

Florice (Florence) signed her father's Certificate of Death as Florece DEESE, therefore I assume that she married a man by the name of Deese. On the 15th of Nov 1994, I checked the marriage records in Benton, Illinois, (Franklin Co) & found no marriage record. Therefore they must have went to another county to get married. Illinois Statewide Death Index 1916-1950 list a Florice Irene Dees died 24 July 1940 in Waltonville, Jefferson Co., IL.

E-mail from Patricia Staley, of Jefferson Co., IL, dated 2 Sep 2002 that Florice is buried in the South Hickory Hill Cem. & that she was born 9 Jun 1904. She is listed on the 1920 Federal Census, Franklin Heights, Franklin Co., IL, dated 23 Feb 1920, living with her father & was 15 years old & that would be correct as she would have been 16 on 9 June 1920. There is also a Donald R. Dees, who died 14 Aug 1942 in Waltonville, Jefferson Co., IL & buried at the Hickory Hill Cem, & he was born 12 Jun 1922. Could Donald R. Dees been Florice’s son?

? ? ? WHERE IS GOD ? ? ?

A couple had two little boys ages 8 and 10 who were excessively mischievous. The boys were always getting into trouble and their parents were at their wits end as to what to do about their behavior.

The mother had heard of a clergyman in town who had been successful in disciplining children in the past. They decided to send the boys to him and he agreed to see the boys but asked to see them individually.

The 8 year old went to meet him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him, “Where is God?” The boy made no respose so the clergyman repeated the question in a stern tone, “Where is God?” Again the boy made no response, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face, “WHERE IS GOD?”

At that the boy bolted from the room, ran home and slammed himself into a closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and said, “What happened?” The younger brother replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time! God is missing and they think we did it.”

Catalpa Street in Dexter over the past 46 years & 6 months & we have ejoyed all of your visits.& gatherings We have seen both of our son’s grow up there. They played in the yard, climbed the trees, played basketball behind the garage, baseball & other games. Remember a base ball going through a neighbors window, one time, cut’s & bruises that they had, also some fights & disagreements with their friends. Remember them catching the Schoolbus, Boy Scouts, Float trips to Current River, taking them & their friends fishing. Remember taking them to Sunday School & Church. They married, moved, had children. foster children of their own & grandchildren. Had some of the best neighbor’s & friends that a person could ever ask for. Saw many of them pass away & we grieved with their families & other’s just moved from the neighborhood. Saw our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts & cousins pass away, while living there. Many memories. “I could go on,and on.”
