I was in the Hospital from April 23rd to April 27th & had another Stent put in an artery. Have done very well since then.

Christine (Hart) Mansfield was in the Dexter Hospital for 4 days & then the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, for over a week in May & had 3 Stents put in an artery. She’s had a long recovery, but doing better at this time.

Gene Fulks, husband of Sue (Hart) Fulks was in the Hospital twice this year. Both times in Tuscon, AZ & had an Aneurysm taken care of & then went back & had a hernia operation. They came back here in Sept. for a short visit. Sure glad to see them.

Richard (Dick) Hart was admitted to the Southeast Missouri Hospital on Sept. 21 with a heart attack & had to stay a week. The Doctor’s put in 3 Stents & a Pacemaker. Dick seems to be doing good & is taking re-hab three times per week.

I may have included some of the following infor- mation on Great Aunt Elsie A. Hart in a previous Newsletter, but have came up with more infomation in recent months, that I find interesting & hope that you all do the same.

Mattie was a Nurse's helper & Guard at the Kankakee Prison when she was 18 to 25 years of age. This would have been sometime between 1919 to 1925.

Uncle Star Hart told me that Martha came to see him in the late 1950’s when he was living in Dade City, Florida, but he was not at home & she left a note on the door saying that she had been there, & would be in touch with him later. He never did hear from her again.

Leroy Dees of Valier, IL wrote me in Oct 2002 & told me that Mattie (Melton) Elder’s half sister Maggie Nelson who married Randall Hicks got a divorce & remarried & moved to Florida in the late 1940’s.

Could Maggie have moved to the Dade City area to be close to her half sister Mattie (Melton) Elder?

On the 15th of Nov 1994, I checked the marriage records in Benton, Illinois, (Franklin Co) & found no marriage record. Therefore they must have went to another county to get married. Illinois Statewide Death Index 1916-1950 list a Florice Irene Dees died 24 July 1940 in Waltonville, Jefferson Co., IL.

She is listed on the 1920 Federal Census, Franklin Heights, Franklin Co., IL, dated 23 Feb 1920, living with her father & was 15 years old & that would be correct as she would have been 16 on 9 June 1920. There is also a Donald R. Dees, who died 14 Aug 1942 in Waltonville, Jefferson Co., IL & buried at the Hickory Hill Cem, & he was born 12 Jun 1922. Could Donald R. Dees been Florice’s son?

Lena M. Beaver, 93 of Girard died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Doctors Hospital. She was born Feb. 2, 1908, in Herald, the daughter of Henry F. and Elsie A. (Hart) Nelson. She married Emil Cornille; he preceded her in death. She later married Harley Beaver; he preceded her in death. An infant son also preceded her in death. Mrs. Beaver worked as a cook in the former Fiesta Restaurant in Virden. She later worked at the dress factory in Virden and in various restaurants in the West Frankfort area for may years. She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. Survivors: a son, Emil (wife) Charleen) Cornille Jr. of Metropolis; a daughter, Elsie (husband) Clarence “Smokey”) Cornille-Stoll of Girard; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grand children; and a great-great-grand child. Bill Aslin, son of the late Dave Aslin and Minnie Harper Aslin, was born June 16, 1922 at rural Dexter, and died in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Dexter on Oct 14, 2002, at the age of 80.

Mr. Aslin was of the Baptist faith, a former line worker for Ozark Dairy in Dexter, and a resident of Dexter. He was united in marriage to Mildred Launius on May 27, 1944, at Bloomfield, and she survives of the home in Dexter.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kathy Tinker of Grover City, Calif, one brother, Rube Aslin of the State of Washington; three sisters, Leah Wilson of the state of Washington, Marion Moody of Sikeston, and Marjorie Ann Hopkins of Alton, Ill.; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Dale Aslin, two brothers, Clifton Aslin and Ray Aslin; two sisters; Sylvia Page and Ruth Stone. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. today Wednesday, Oct 16, 2002.

Letha Irene Livingston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha Miller Kearby, was born Sept. 22, 1911, at Datto, Ark., and died Nov 7th, 2002 at St Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Livingston worked as a cook and nurse’s aide. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, and many benefited from her talent. She was united in marriage to Albert F. Livingston on Dec. 11, 1929, at Sikeston, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1995.

Survivors include four sons, Floyd Livingston of Bell City, Joe Livingston of Cape Girardeau, Gene Livingston of Bowling Green, Ky., and Allen Livingston of Frutland; two daughters, Mary Alleta Robertson of Delta & Sue Long of Cape Girardeau; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m today, Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in advance. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Nov. 9, 2002, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Pastor Denny Robertson officiating. Interment will follow in Foster Hills Cemetery in Morley.

Travel in the 21st Century was exemplified on Nov 6th when Kevin McClintick flew his helicopter from his house in Dallas, Texas and landed on the lawn at Kerry Gilbow’s house in Dexter, Missouri. Kevin’s sister Theresa Brown was in the Co-Pilot seat. They flew in to visit their Missouri Aunts and Cousins. Kevin and Theresa are the children of Helen (Hart) and Bill McClintick of Williamsburg, VA.

Travis Swallows, wife Diana & daughter Ellaina Christine came home on Nov 3rd to attend his Grandmother Lola (Slaughter) Waters funeral. Travis & his wife are both in the Air Force & presently stationed at Alamogordo, NM. After the funeral they spent a few days visiting with other family members.

A couple had two little boys ages 8 and 10 who were excessively mischievous. The boys were always getting into trouble and their parents were at their wits end as to what to do about their behavior.

The mother had heard of a clergyman in town who had been successful in disciplining children in the past. They decided to send the boys to him and he agreed to see the boys but asked to see them individually.

The 8 year old went to meet him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him, “Where is God?” The boy made no respose so the clergyman repeated the question in a stern tone, “Where is God?” Again the boy made no response, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face, “WHERE IS GOD?”

At that the boy bolted from the room, ran home and slammed himself into a closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and said, “What happened?” The younger brother replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time! God is missing and they think we did it.”

Sgt. Vic Hart To See Duty in Germany Sgt. Vic Hart, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Beck, Dow, will report to New York on December 10, to sail for Germany. Mrs. Hart and the baby son, Danny, will come to Dow in November to stay with her parents for a while, later joining her husband in Germany. Sgt. Hart will bring her. They have returned to Fort Knox, Ky., after visiting here for two weeks. (Note: Vic was the son of the late Joe & Ann Hart of Dexter & had been drafted into the U.S. Army in Oct. 1945 at the age of 15. (He told the local draft board that he was 18). Other than a short period of time between two terms of service, he continued to serve in the Army until 1968, when he retired as First Sergeant.)

Neal Mansfield, Stoddard County farmer, has filed for the Democratic nomination for State representative for this, the 157th district. The post is presently held by Jim Spain who is seeking the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. Mansfield filed this week with Secretary of State James Kirkpatrick in Jefferson City. Mansfield, who farms west of Dexter, has been Federal Crop inspector in Stoddard & Butler counties, but has resigned that position to seek the political office. This is the first time he has sought poilitical office. He has been a resident of Stoddard County since 1934. (Note: Neal is our cousin Christine Hart’s husband).

Carmi, IL - Mar 1951
The Times profiled Judge Ulys Pyle of Carmi. The was born near Stokes Station; his father was a Civil war Veteran and his mother (who died recently at 98) was one of the last seven surviving Civil war nurses. He practiced law in Missouri & Oklahoma, farmed a bit and did some government service in Washington, D.C. before returning to White County in 1917. He was elected County Judge the next year and held that position for four years. He has been active in the First Baptist Church, Kiwanis Club of Carmi and in the practice of law.

Catalpa Street in Dexter over the past 46 years & 6 months & we have ejoyed all of your visits.& gatherings We have seen both of our son’s grow up there. They played in the yard, climbed the trees, played basketball behind the garage, baseball & other games. Remember a base ball going through a neighbors window, one time, cut’s & bruises that they had, also some fights & disagreements with their friends. Remember them catching the Schoolbus, Boy Scouts, Float trips to Current River, taking them & their friends fishing. Remember taking them to Sunday School & Church. They married, moved, had children. foster children of their own & grandchildren. Had some of the best neighbor’s & friends that a person could ever ask for. Saw many of them pass away & we grieved with their families & other’s just moved from the neighborhood. Saw our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts & cousins pass away, while living there. Many memories. “I could go on,and on.”

Jerry Wayne Montgomery, 74, of Shelbyville, former head instructor of Commercial Dirivers Institute of Murfreesboro, died Monday Nov. 11, 1002.

A Petersburg native, he was a member of the Church of Christ. American Legion, V.F.W. and a graduate of the Morgan school for Boys in Petersburg. He attended Tennessee Tech and was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in World War II, 101st Airborne. He was the son of the late Fred M. and Wilma (Hart) Montgomery.

Survivors include a son, Charlie James Montgomery of McMinnville; daughter, Judy Ann Mangus of Port St. Richie, Fla.; brother, Bill Montgomery of Oak Ridge; caregiver, Betty Menck of Shelbyville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday at Hillcrest Funeral Home with Ed Boggess officiating. Interment was in Old Orchard Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospic of Highland Rim. Martin M. Hart was born 20 Apr 1845 in Pope Co., IL to John Henry & Cassandra (Jones) Hart. He married Martha Emerson 12 May 1869, White Co., IL. Martha was born 21 May 1851, White Co., IL to William E. & Mary Ann (Pyle) Emerson. According to Martin M. Hart’s declaration for a Pension, after they married they lived in IL until 1873, then in TN until 1875, in IL until 1885, in MO until 1891 & in IL until his death 14 July 1919. Great Grandma Martha Hart died 28 Aug 1927 & both are buried at the Hickory Hill Cemetery, Broughton, Hamilton Co., IL.

Elsie A. Hart, born 19 May 1883 in IL, died Nov 1909. She first married Noah C, Melton 12 Nov 1899 & he died before the birth of their first child. It is a possibility that he is buried at the Herald Cem., White Co., IL? Elsie married second Henry Frank Nelson, 25 July 1903 & he died 9 April 1927 & both buried at Hickory Hill Cemetery, Broughton, IL.

Mollie Dawson Hart, born 19 Dec 1886 in IL, died 1905 & it is not known where she was buried?
