Homewood commits to Syracuse Williamsburg, VA - Daily Press

December 25,2003
Syracuse University wasn't very high on Jamestown senior Erin Homewood's wish list. In fact, the 2002 and 2003 Daily Press Swimmer of the Year had pretty much decided to compete and study at Rice University in Houston.

But a last-minute trip to Syracuse changed everything. Homewood was sold on SU's blend of academics and athletics, and felt comfortable on its campus. She recently signed a letter-of-intent and will receive a full scholarship to swim for the really - Orangewomen.

"It's a great academic school, which is something I really wanted," the Jamestown senior said Wednesday. "Education is very important since swimming won't carry me very far after college. Rice was it until the Syracuse people called in September and invited me for a visit. I really liked what I saw and felt like I'd fit in. "

She didn't seriously consider an in-state school for the most basic of reasons.

"I wanted to use swimming to get out of Virginia," Homewood said. "Everybody was talking about Virginia and Virginia Tech, but I wanted to be different. My parents told me last year to get my college plans going, so I started (the recruiting process) by sending information to 10 schools. It was going to be Rice until the Syracuse visit." Homewood will be a freshman on a team with one sophomore, seven juniors and two seniors. "It's not a great program right now," she said, "but it's a young team that wants to get better. That was one of the factors I considered."

Homewood, who also competes for the Coast Guard Blue Dolphins, takes impressive credentials to SUo As a sophomore, she won Group ANA state titles in the 200-yard individual medley and SOO-yard freestyle, and was on Jamestown's championship 400yard freestyle relay team.

In last year's ANA state meet she was second in the 200-yard 1M and SOO-yard freestyle. The Eagles were third behind Tabb and William Byrd in last year's ANA state meet, co-champion with Tabb in 2002, and state champion in 2001.

**This marriage happening in Hernandp MS brings to mind my own marriage. Both my 1st husband and I were too young to get married and our parents were against it. We threatened to run off to Hernando MS if they didn't sign for us, so they gave in and signed the papers. I don't think Hernando, MS had too many requirements back then. **

Map of the World

A father started to read a magazine but was being bothered by his little girl, Jessica. Finally, he tore a sheet out of his magazine on which was printed the map of the world. Tearing it into small pieces, he gave it to Jessica, and said, "Go into the other room and see if you can put this together." After a few minutes, Jessica returned and handed him the map correctly fitted together. The father was surprised and asked how she had finished so quickly. "Oh," she said, "on the other side of the paper is a picture of Jesus. When 1 got all of Jesus back where He belonged, then the world came together."

80 Year Old Man

An 80 year old man went to the doctor for a checkup and the doctor was amazed at what good shape the guy was in.

The doctor asked, "To what do you attribute your good health?"

The old timer said, "I'm a turkey hunter and that's why I'm in such good shape. I'm up well before daylight and out chasing turkeys up and down the mountains. "

The doctor said, "Well, I'm sure that helps, but there's got to be more to it. How old was your dad when he died?"

The old timer said, "Who said my dad's dead?" The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your dad's still alive? How old is he?"

The old timer said, "He's 100 yrs old and, in fact, he hunted turkey with me this morning, and that's why he's still alive... he's a turkey hunter."

The doctor said, "Well, that's great, but I'm sure there's more to it. How about your dad's dad? How old was he when he died?"

The old timer said, "Who said my grandpa's dead?"The doctor said, "You mean you're 80 years old and your grandfather's still living! How old is he?"

The old timer said, "He's 118 yrs old."

The doctor was getting frustrated at this point and said, "I guess he went turkey hunting with you this morning too?"

The old timer said, "No... Grandpa couldn't go this morning because he got married. "

The Doctor said in amazement, "Got married!! Why would al18-year-old guy want to get married?"

The old timer said, "Who said he wanted to?"

THE SMART OLD FARMER

An old farmer in Georgia had owned a farm for many years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up nice; picnic tables, horseshoe courts, basketball court, etc. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw a bunch of young women skinny dipping in his pond.

He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond.

One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked. I'm here to feed the alligator."

Moral: Old age and cunning will triumph over youth and enthusiasm everytime.

On Jun 6,2004 Joe Davis informed us of the storm damage to the Mt. Herman Cemetery in Bedford County, Tennessee. The following is what he told us:

I was able to get by the cemetery today. Apparently the main body of the tornado went right between the church and the old cemetery. For those of you familiar with the cemetery, the woods right behind Henry's grave are pretty torn up.. A huge old tree (walnut I think) was uprooted leaving at least a 6 foot deep hole, and the rootball was as big as a van.

Now for the bad news.. The shade tree near the bronze plaque just added was also uprooted. This tree fell across many graves, including Derryl and Rachel Hart's.. Derryl and Rachel's stone was moved along the base, and tilted, but otherwise intact. Several graves behind Derryl's still have the tree/limbs over them, and I could not see the extent of the damage. I did notice one large stone that had been toppled. Many graves lie under the tree, and the tree will have to be removed to asses the damage. I would guess the tornado was probably a weak one, but it was enough to make a large mess..

A little boy was overheard praying: - "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am."

Hart - Melton - Nelson

Hart - Dixon Reunion, Harrisburg, Illinois

The following was sent to me about the Dixon

Hart Reunion that is held in Harrisburg, Illinois each year.

Dear M.A. Hart,
Thank you for getting in touch with me about the Dixon-Hart Reunion in Harrisburg. This year was the 74th reunion. I hate to say this, but our reunion is getting smaller each year. We onl;y had 13 family members attending this year. Our young people won't take an interest. This reunion is held on the 4th Sunday of August each year. The reunions have been held in various places, the old family church yard - different parks around the Harrisburg area, but we old-timers have opted for the comfort of air conditioning the last several years. We are now meetting in the Pruit-Harris Community Building in downtown Harrisburg. We would like to invite any of your family of Hart's to our next reunion. I would be happy to send each of you an invitation if you would send names and addresses.

I think it is exciting to publish a family newsletter each year. I would love to read one of them. I think some of us would enjoy attending one of your reunIOns.

I am not related to the Dixon-Hart family myself only through marriage. As I understand it - my husband's family is related to both the Dixon's and the Hart's of Harrisburg.

I will include a list of the people attending the last reunion in August of 2004.

Hoping to hear from you again.

Sincerely,
Margaret A. Duncan

GRANDMA'S Apron

The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans ITom the oven; it was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes halfhatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those old aprons were ideal hiding places for the kids; and when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling-wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls.

In the fall it was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out on the porch and waved herapron, and the men knew it was time to come in ITom the fields for dinner.

It will be a long time before anyone invents something that will replace that old-time apron that served so many purposes.

How many of you can remember our Grandma's & Moms always wore an apron??????

Celebrates Fifty Eighth Anniversary - Congraulations to Christine (Hart) & Neal Mansfield of Dudley, Missouri who celebrated their fifth eighth Wedding Anniversary on November 27, 2004. They were married in Dexter, MO. Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions
Author Unknown

This is beautiful and wonderfull!! Enjoy!

When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard. My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on.

When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away.

My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.

When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm so I sit selfconsciously and listen.

My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them, they make up their own.

When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk.

My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the ground laughing.

When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that.

My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight.

Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."

When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets.

My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with.

I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from? No wonder God loves the little children!

Interested In ANew Hart Book???????

We have a few Hart relativies that are interested in publishing a Second Addition to the James Hart & His Descendants Book that was compiled by Charles Gerton Hart & published by Marion P. Send me your thought's bye-mail or snail mail to me.

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!! !
