James C. D. Coats, a native of Texas County and a resident of Cabool for 13 years, died last Saturday at his home here after an illness of three weeks. Mr. Coats went to the Kansas wheat fields and worked for a while and upon his return complained of being ill but no one relized (realized) that his condition was serious until a few days before his death. The funeral services were conducted Sunday August 4 by Rev. Wintzen, beautiful floral contributions were received from the Christian Endevor Society, C. E. Davis and wife; P. S. Grant and wife, Knights and Ladies of Security, Ladies Aid Soceity, W. O. Dillon and wife, Ed Miller and wife, Lon Miller and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fredrick, the Misses Bolch and many other friends contributed flowers but didn't attach their names.

James C. D. Coats was born in Texas County near Clara, April 16, 1860, died August 2, 1919 being 59 years 3 months and 16 days of age at the time of his death. He was married to Alice M. Douglas in 1882 and professed religion and joined the Oak Hill Christian Church at about this time. He moved to Cabool in 1906 and remained one of her valued citizens until his death. Six children were born to this union, all are living except Walter, who gave his life for his country in the great war that just closed, the other children are Perry Coats of Belvidere, Kansas, Lee, Murtle, Lillie and John of this place and vicinity. Beside the children and the dear wife there are several half brothers, sisters, nieces, cousins and grandchildren to mourn his death.

Pioneer Resident Passes Away

Mary Alice, daughter of Green and Cynthia Douglas was born in Cacy (Casey?) county, Kentucky. January 1, 1867, departed this life June 25, 1939, being 72 years, five months and 25 days of age. She came with her family to Texas county in 1876. The family settled on a farm in the Lundy neighborhood where her girlhood and young womanhood days were spent.

She was married September 14, 1882 to James C. D. Coats. To this union six children were born, two of whom, with the companion, preceeded her in death. One son, Walter, made the supreme sacrifice in France during the World War, and the elder son, Perry died in 1934 in Idaho. The husband and father passed on some nineteen years ago. The family moved to Cabool in 1906 and have since made their home here, having lived in the one house for the last 27 years.

She leaves to mourn her going the four children, Lee and John Coats, Myrtle Timmerman and Mrs. Lillie Brown all of Cabool. also eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Robert Wall of Clara, Mo., besides a host of nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

In early girlhood she was converted and united with Oak Hill Christian church. This church is still active and the building still stands on the grounds donated by her father. Soon after coming to Cabool her membership was moved here, and she has always been loyal to her church. She was a true Christian mother and wife, and a neighbor loved and respected by all.

Funeral services were conducted at the Elliott Funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 by the Rev. E. F. Maness. Interment in Cabool cemetery.

Lee Andrew Coats, son of James and Mary Coats, was born March 16, 1885, and died at his home in Cabool on Jan. 24, 1959, making his age at the time of his passing 73 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was united in marriage Aug. 2, 1909, to Leona McGehee and to this union three children were born, Mrs. Cleo Gan, Cabool; James R. of Cabool. One daughter, Jewel preceded him in death in infancy. At the time of his passing he was a member of the First Baptist church in Cabool.

He is survived by his wife, Leona, the son James and the daughter Cleo Gan. Three step grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Timmerman and Mrs. Lillie Dove of Cabool, one brother John of Cabool and several nieces and nephews.

He was a kind and jolly man, always willing to do what he could for others and was a devoted husband and father. He always attended church when his health permitted. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. Services were held at 2:30 Tuesday at the Cabool Baptist Church with Rev. C. O. Branson officiating burial was in the Cabool cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home of Cabool.

Sarah Leonia McGehee, was born near Cabool on May 22, 1881, and departed this life in Springfield, Mo., on September 29, 1974 at the age of 93 years, four months and seven days. She was the daughter of Robert J. and Ola (McGraw) McGehee.

On August 2, 1909 at Houston, Mo., she was united in marriage to Lee Coats and to that union three children were born. A daughter, Jewel, preceded her in death as have her parents, two brothers, Joe and Louis, and a sister, Elizabeth Gibson.

For many years they lived in the Hamilton Creek area, later moving to Cabool. Mr. Coats died in 1959. All of her life was spent in the Cabool area with the exception of about three years, spent in Kansas. She professed her faith in the Lord many years ago, and at the time of her passing was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool, a fine Christian lady, who will be sadly missed.

Surviving are a son, James of Cabool, a daughter, Cleo Gan, of Cabool, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, also a host of other relatives and many friends. Services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Jacobs officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry.

James Robert Coats, son of Lee A. and Leona McGehee Coats, was born February 20, 1916 in Texas County near Cabool and departed this life on March 2, 1987 at St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Missouri, after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

James was a lifelong resident of this area with the exception of five years that he lived in Burns, Kansas. He served his country during the World War 11, in the Pacific theater including the Phillippines and Australia as well as other Pacific areas, in the medical corps where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal. He graduated from Cabool High School in 1935 and was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool. On July 11, 1952, he and Claudia Short were united in marriage. James served on the Cabool Police Force from November 1974 until October 1978, retiring due to ill health. He also worked at the Western Auto store in Cabool for many years and was a substitute rural mail carrier for several years.

Survivors include Claudia of the home in Cabool; three step-children, Bill Short of Baltimore, Maryland, Sandra Ferguson of St. Louis, and Judy Gilmore of Mtn. Grove; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Cleo Glan (Gan) of Cabool; and other relatives. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 1987 in First Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Wakefield officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry.

Fred Otis Timmerman was born February 28, 1891, in Carroll County, Missouri, and died February 26, 1984, at Jefferson City, at the age of 92 years, 11 months, and 26 days. He was the fourth child of James and Mary Alice Menefee Timmerman. Three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. In 1922, he was married to Myrtle Ann Coats of Cabool, who died in 1972. To this union was born one son, Fred Otis, Jr., of Jefferson city, and one daughter who died at birth. Timmerman attended Fredonia Business College, Fredonia, Kansas. He moved to the Cabool area in 1915 and lived there until moving to Jefferson City five and a half years ago to make his home with his son and family. He was a well known and much respected farmer and bookkeeper in the Cabool area for more than 60 years. Fred was a World War 1 veteran, a former member of the Cabool Kiwanis Club, and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cabool and, later, the Manes (Maness?) Memorial Baptist Church, serving as deacon and clerk for many years. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Concord Baptist Church of Jefferson City. He also served as director and clerk of the Cabool School District for 20 years. Other survivors in addition to his son are two grandchildren, Mark Fred of Los Angeles, California, and Jerianne of Fulton, Missouri. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, in Elliott-Gentry Chapel with Rev. Frank Hill officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery.

Myrtle Ann Coats, daughter of the late James and Alice Douglas Coats was born near Cabool December 18, 1897 and departed this life November 25, 1972 in the Texas County Memorial Hospital at Houston following a short illness, her age being 74 years, 11 months and seven days.

On October 28, 1922 she was united in marriage to Fred O. Timmerman of Cabool and to this union two children were born. A daughter died in infancy. Also preceding her in death were four brothers.

At a young age she united with the Christian Church and later transferred her membership to the Baptist Church. At the time of her passing she was a member of the Maness Memorial Baptist Church of Cabool. She was a great student and teacher of the Bible and many families of this area have gained much religious knowledge from her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, whom she loved to help so much in various ways.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Fred of the home, a son Fred, Jr., of Jefferson City, Mo., a sister Mrs. Lillie Dove of Denton, Tex., and two grandchildren. Also other relatives and many friends and neighbors will miss her.

Funeral services were held 2:30 Monday in the Cabool First Baptist Church with Rev. Marvin Jacobs officiating. Burial was in the Cabool Cemetery under direction of Elliott-Gentry.

John Henry Coats son of James and Alice Coats was born near Houston in Texas County on Nov. 1, 1903 and departed this life suddenly on October 20, 1961 at the age of 57 years 11 months and 20 days. He was a farmer by trade but his work was very limited due to ill health that he had been in for many years. When a young man he made a profession of faith in Christ.

Those left to mourn his passing are his loving companion Georgia, one daughter, Betty Lou of the home. Two sons, John Jr. and James both of Dodge City, Kans,; two sisters, Myrtle Timmerman and Lillie Dove both of Cabool, three grandchildren, also one sister in law, neices and nephews and many other relatives and friends. They meet tonight, the one who closed his eyes unto the pain forever and the woe. And the one who found the mansions in the skies. In all their splendor long years ago.

What will they say when first their eyes shall meet? Or will a silence take the place of words as only saints will know. How strangely sweet a rapture such as only Heaven affords, will they who went before ask first for those left far behind whom they loved so well. Or will the other near to heaven repose, question of all its meaning. Who can tell. Services were held at 2:30 Sunday in the Elliott-Gentry Funeral home with C. R. Barrick officiating.

Burial was in the Cabool cemetery.

Georgia E. Gillett was born near Cabool February 22, 1911, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth McGehee Gillett. She passed away at her home near Cabool June 10, 1982 at age 71 years, three months and 18 days. On January 10, 1933 at Cabool she was united in marriage to John Coats who preceded her in passing in 1961. Most of her life was spent in the Cabool area where she was a well known person and helpful to others. Her parents and four brothers have also preceded her in departure.

She leaves a daughter, Betty Lou of the home in Cabool; a sister, Mrs. Johnsie Dean, Fayetteville, Arkanss; and many other relatives and friends. Services were 2 p.m. saturday, June 12, in Elliott-Gentry Chapel with Rev. K. A. Bolerjack officiating.

Burial was in Cabool Cemetery.
