KESTERSON KOLLECTIONS

Christine Walters

After some serious thought I have decided that I have to change my email address. The new one is at the top of the newsletter and it is [email protected]. I needed a place "outside" of my own computer to store information. For the 3rd time now we have had a computer virus attack and I'm lost all my email address! At hotmail I can save them separately from my own computer and they will always remain safe. I can also retain my messages longer there than I can on my own computer (not a computer thing - just a husband thing). Hotmail has a built in virus monitor that might help keep the virus problem down. We had two such programs running on our computer but the bug still got through. The old one will remain effective but if you would all start using the Hotmail address I would appreciate it. Its not that the bug came from any of you. I don't believe that for a minute.

So with that said we can get down to business. I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer. I am staying home this year - probably taking a trip in the fall to see my mother in Georgia. Please take the time to check out the Kesterson Website. I've added a lot of stuff to it and more going on it all the time. www.angelfire.com/il2/cwalters/index.html If anyone has any pictures, documents or anything related you can send them to me and I'll get them up the site as soon as possible. Right now I have St Stephens Parrish picture up and the Concord Baptist in Lafayette Co MO.

Jean Evans a long time member of the Kesterson Newsletter lost her husband of nearly 40 years on April 19 this year. Jerry Lee Evans was born 16 Nov 1939 in St Charles, Lee Co VA. He married Jean Cary 24 Aug 1960. Its always hard to loose a loved one and any one who wants to contact Jean can reach her at [email protected]. Our thoughts are with you Jean. Jean is a descendant of Isham Bailey 1814-1880 Greene Co TN & Martha "Voiles" Kesterson through their son Joseph Kesterson. Jean also notified me that on April 30 2000 Olivia Faith Evans was born and doing fine and we are reminded that life does go on.

Some time ago Shirley Smith (Newletter Member) made a trip out to Northumberland County VA and visited St Stephens Parish. She took pictures and I just now figured out how to put them on the Kesterson Web Site.. So take a look.. www.angelfire.com/il2/cwalters/index.html Click on Kesterson Churches to see a picture of what is now St Stepens Parish Church. This is not the same "church" that our Kestersons went to but it may be sitting on the same land.

Have also added a picture of the Concord Baptist Church in Lafayette County MO, courtesy of David Kesterson. This is probably the spot where most of the John Henry Kesterson family attended church. We know that some of his children were members. More will be added as time permits.

If anyone has a picture of their ancestors church send it to me and we'll get them all up.. Also send some information about the church so we know when it started etc.

Theresa Kingsley sent me "The Poorhouse Story" www.poorhousestory.com/index.htm Many families can be found in such places especially in the "good old days".. You might find some of yours there as well. If anyone wants me to look anything up on these sites I've mentioned and they are not on line and can't do it themselves just please write to me - I'll do it for you.

Just recently I received an email from another descendant of one of the "Earlier" Kesterson ancestors. Margie Mitchells husband is a descendant of Elizabeth Berry Kesterson who married John W Mitchell 26 Dec 1813 Northumberland VA. Elizabeth Berry Kesterson was the daughter of William Kesterson b 4 Aug 1837 & Elizabeth Berry. William being the son of George 1710-1786 who married Elizabeth ? and of course George was the s/o George and Aquilla Fry Kesterson. So we have now gained another inch. Here is what we have on Elizabeth and John w Mitchel.. All I have is the name of 1 child right now. Margie will send me the others soon. You can reach Margie at [email protected]

Henry M Mitchell born about 1817 Northumberland VA married Roberta C Edmonds 2 Nov 1864. Roberta's parents were Robert Edmonds & Elizabeth George of Lancaster VA.

Children of Henry and Roberta: Noni 28 Nov 1865, Elizabeth E 17 Feb 1867, John Robert 1 Mar 1868 m Ellen McLaughlin (These are Margies husbands grandparents) , Henry C. 4 Jul 1869 and Luther W 23 Jul 1872.

I have recently discovered another connection back to our Greene Co TN folks. This one has to do with William C Kesterson the s/o Thomas & Nancy Carol Jackson Kesterson. No one had any details on Wm C and Anna - just the marriage which took place on 11 Jun 1848 in Greene TN. I think that Wm and Anna moved to Clay Co IL but someone from that line will have to make the effort to "prove" them. In the cemetary listings it shows Wm C Kesterson d 24 Feb 1880 age 58y,5m,4d and wife Anna Kesterson d 8 Sep 1863 age 36y,2m,24d. From and Email received from Cheryl & Richard Kesterson I have proof that John and Rosetta Kesterson also buried there are her husbands ancestors. Finding William C and Anna in the same area leads me to believe that John (1853-1909) is their son. The Cemetery listings are listed below and after that the lineage that Cheryl and Robert have verified. I wrote to the Clay Co Historical Society to get this information.

**Following note written by Volunteer of Clay Co**
" I know that William Kesterson married a Sarah Smith Kenley after his wife Anna died. They had several children which lived with Sarah for a time."

Cheryl sent me the following on Nov 7 1998 Email: [email protected] "My husband Richard is the son of Robert from Flora and Leroy's grandson. Leroy is still alive in Cisne IL. His sister Thelma is still alive too. According to Thelma, her fathers name was actually Clover Riley Kesterson and his wife was Carrie Pixley. Most of our Kesterson's were buried in the Dillman Cemetery in Sailor Springs, a short drive from Olney IL. Clover Riley Kesterson's parents were Rosetta and John Kesterson. Clover's brothers and siters names were, Frank, Pearl (Male), Leona, Maggie Maxwell and Daphne Etchison all passed away now. Daphne's daughter is still alive and has some genealogy information. Her name is Rosetta Adams and she lives at a Rural Route somewhere in Mason IL 62443."

(I just now matched her information up with the stuff I got from Clay Co IL). I have the CD Disks from Family Tree Maker which also gives information on this family on Tree # 1673 Volume 16) Another source was on Tree 0798 Volume 22) There is a Family Tree Maker Sight on Jeanette Browning Family. Her address is PO Box 138 Lake Ann MI 49650 and her email is [email protected]. Further information came from Family Tree Maker Descendents of Unknown Griffen given by Amanda Sue Griffin 1718 Mary Lane Olney IL 62450 and her email is [email protected].

This poem was sent to me from Jan Black a researcher on one of my other lines. Its oh so true!! Originally writen by Wayne Hand 1999 I have put this up on the Webpage too.

Alas, my elusive kinsman, You've led me quite a chase,
I thought I'd found your courthouse, but the Yankees burned the place.
You always kept your bags packed, although you had no fame,
And just for the fun of it, twice you changed your name.
You never owed any man, or at least I found no bills,
In spite of eleven offspring, you never left a will.

I'm the only one looking, another searcher I can't find
I pray (maybe that's his fathers name), as I go out of my mind,
They said you had a headstone, in a shady plot.
I've been there twenty times, and can't even find the lot.
You never wrote a letter, your bible we can't find,
It's probably in some attic, out of sight and out of mind.

You first married a ... Smith, and just to set the tone,
The other four were Sarahs, and everyone a Jones.
You cost me two fortunes, one of which I did not have,
My wife, my house and Fido, God, how I miss that Yellow Lab.
But somewhere you slipped up Ole Boy, somewhere you left a track,
And if I don't find you this year, well then next year I'll be back.

P J Cowling sent this information to the myfamily.com Kesterson site hosted by Robin Kesterson on Jun 22, 2000. It was found on the internet at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System All surnamed Kesterson: This is a list of the TN Soldiers and I'm pretty sure they were all in the Confederate Army. This is the regiment they were in and those of you who belong to these lines should send for the military and pension records. A lot of valuable information can be gleaned from them. The cost is about $10 or $15 for photo copies and as much as I'd like to, I can't afford to send for them all.

Here is the Montgomery Alabama City Directory 1880-1895. I found this on the Internet but have lost the address of the site. I'm not sure who these Kesterson belong to but have a feeling it was part of the David Kesterson family that went to Alabama after the Civil War. David born about 1814 was the son of David Chadwell Kesterson/Elizabeth Lanaham of Claiborne TN. David was married to Susan Belvin. Their children were Mary, Alexander, Nancy, Debbie, Louis, Adaline, Reuben, Stokeley and Elizabeth. Milo, the proprietor of the Capitol City Hotel, listed below, is probably a descendant of Alexander, Louis, Reuben or Stokely - one of the sons. Miss Sallie B a daughter of Milo?

Another descendant of John Kesterson/Malinda Dorsey has found us. They are Jerry and Linda Knight Crain. Linda descends from Thomas Jefferson Kesterson/Martha Cunningham through their daughter Linda Kesterson who married Boliver T Knight Sr. You can email them at [email protected]. I don't have their home address but could probably get it if anyone wants to reach them that isn't online.

So that's all for now - Till Next time
