Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church here last Friday for Mrs. Alexander Kesterson, who died at her home south east of Paoli on Thursday, July 19 (1928). The services were in charge of Elder W. C. Hancock, of Youngs Creek. Mrs. Kesterson had been ill for some time. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter and several sons, all married. Ruth Cornelia Lewis, age 81 of Ruskin FL, formerly of Daysboro d 17 Jun 1995 in Sun City FL. daughter of Adeline Kesterson & Dr Robert Lewis, Ruth was born in Rockcastle Co KY and married Hobert Lykins. There are 2 sons and 1 daughter. Lindon Lykins of Durham NC and David Lykins of Salyersville and Judith Flannery of Ruskin FL. 3 Sisters are Lucile Caudill and Juanita Hall both of Lexington and Winnie Bryant of Williamsburg VA. 7 Grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

James W. Kesterson, 90, of Winter Haven, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Tandem Health Care, Winter Haven. Born Dec. 19, 1915, in Goree, Texas, he came to the area in 1947 from Flint, Mich. He was a chemical engineer for Dupont in Flint and the Florida Experiment Station in Lake Alfred. He was a member of Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a commander Navy aviator in World War II. He was a member of Phi Tau Sigma (Food and Science Honorary); Society for Economic Botany; Florida State Horticultural Society, New York Academy of Science, Institute of Food Technologists, American Orchid Society and Ridge Orchid Society. He had 175 published articles, which included 14 technical bulletin, a monograph, two patents and 158 science journal articles pertaining to citrus essential oils, specialty products and by-products. His honors include ASME Citrus Engineering Award; Florida Citrus Hall of Fame; Florida Citrus Mutual Award of Excellence in citrus by-product research, and Sunkist Award for Excellence in Citrus Products Technology; American Men and Women of Science (R.R. Bowker Co.), Who's Who in the South and Southwest (Marquis 16 Ed.) and Who's Who in Technology Today (Technology Recognition Corp.) Survivors include his wife, Helen Kesterson of Winter Haven; a son, James E. (Brenda) Kesterson of Auburndale; and a granddaughter, Brandi Kesterson-Gierun of Orlando. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church in Winter Haven. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Barbara Davis Cate, daughter of area environmentalist, dies April 04, 1995 A grave-side service for Barbara Huntington Davis Cate, 92, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Mann's Heritage Chapel. Her mother, the late Annie Mae Davis, was the first to suggest creating the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and became known as "mother" of the Smokies. Mrs. Cate, who was a member of St. John's Cathedral and Cherokee County Club, died Sunday. She leaves a son, Thomas H.D. Kesterson; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson, all of Knoxville; sister, Mrs. John Burnham Jr., Pasadena, Calif. The family suggests that memorials be made to St. John's Cathedral.

John Doyle Spurlock -- Graveside funeral services for John Doyl Spurlock, 83, of Early, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Zephyr Cemetery with Eddie Ailshie of Early First Baptist Church officiating under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday. John passed away on Thursday morning, Sept. 20, 2007, in Brownwood Regional Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 23, 1923, in Zephyr to Samuel Doyl and Lorena Belvin Spurlock. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army. John worked as a welder for Santa Fe International in petroleum pipeline construction in many different places around the world. He married Carol Dean Nichols in 1972. He was a Methodist. John is survived by his wife, Carol Spurlock of Early; two daughters, Sheryl Myrick of Brownwood and Carol Lynn Hagan of Anchorage, Alaska; a son, Sam Spurlock of Brownwood; two stepdaughters, Debbie Asbill of Abilene and Linda Fleming of Early; three grandchildren; two sisters, Gladyce Rasberry and Vonnie Guthrie, both of Brownwood; three brothers, C.E. Spurlock of Grand Saline, and B.J. Spurlock and B.B. Spurlock, both of Stephenville; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Doyl Spurlock Jr.
