Patrick Cusack and his wife who's name
is unknown where the parents of Mary Ann Cusack my 3 x
Great Grandmother. Mary was born about 1815 and she married Edward Lynch
the son of Peter Lynch of Seefin County Cavan..
Like Peter Lynch, Patrick Cusack was a tenement
farmer and the two families were neighbours. Patrick Cusack, according to the
Tithe Applotment books in 1827, was paying 5/- rent on 6acres 3roods of
land at Seefin. Both of these families would have endured the same day
to day living and working conditions.
Peter Lynch and Patrick Cusacks
grandparents and parents, would have seen the increase in population
in County Cavan and other parts of Ireland, and their livelihoods would
have been affected when the land rented to them and other tenant farmers
was being reduced in size. This was a time when farmers were finding it
more difficult to maintain their families on their tiny tenements. In
1750 when Flax growing was introduced to Cavan, farmers tried
cultivating this new crop, along with the usual corn and potatoes.
