Magdelena (Biddle) Sliffe

The Budget, Sugarcreek
14 Dec 1899

Mrs. Magdelena Sliffe died Nov. 17, 1899, aged 86 yrs., 7 mo. and 29 days. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dreibelbies, at the German Reformed church, at Shanesville, Nov. 29th. Deceased was the 2nd daughter of Frederick and Catherine Biddle, who emigrated from Pennsylvania when Magdelena was 3 years old, taking up their residence on the farm now occupied by Thos. Richardson, in Sugarcreek Twp. In 1831 she was married to Henry Sliffe and moved on the Sliffe homestead, one mile northeast of Shanesville, where they lived until the year 1872, when the farm was sold. They then made their home on the 10 acre lot, adjoining their former home. The husband died very suddenly on the morning of July 7, 1880, leaving her alone to continue the household, which she did for nearly 7 years. In April 1887 she returned again to the old homestead and lived with her son and family until the time of her death. For the last 12 years of her life she was ill and bedfast during the winter months, and her last illness lasted over a year. At the time of her death she was the oldest resident in the township, yet she had a good memory and could tell many interesting tales of pioneer life. To her were born 5 children, 3 of whom preceded her to the world beyond. Surviving her are a son, a daughter, 22 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great-granchildren.
