M. L. Conner, J.P.
Acting Coroner

First witness.  William A. Furrow after being duly sworn

When I first saw Mr. James Rierson him and George Boyd was coming from J. T. Aldridge’s spring.  They seemed to be drunk at the time.  He and his brother John Rierson follow myself and Mr. Samuel Stump up in J. T. Aldridge’s meadow as we was taking W. C. Walters home drunk.  There now James Rierson and George Boyd, Iram Aldridge had commenced a fight.  I am positive that there was no one close enough to use a knife at this time of the fight except Iram Aldridge and George Boyd.
At that time Mr. James Rierson cried out some one has killed me (and at that time, did those two boys do) – George Boyd & Iram Aldridge, they run up toward the woods.  I don’t think he lived over two min. after he cried out I am killed.  Samuel Stump and myself did leave from where James Rierson lay dead and go down to Sarah Walters.
Signed:  William Furrow

Second witness:  Samuel G. Stump after being duly sworn

First thing I saw was Mr. James Rierson coming toward me from Mr. J. T. Aldridge’s spring as I was taking W. C. Walters home drunk.  He and his brother John Rierson followed us up into Mr. J. T. Aldridge’s meadow near where he was killed.  There Mr. James Rierson knocked W. C. Walters down and jumped on him and held him and his brother John Rierson run up and hit W. C. Walters in the face also.  And some one jerked John Rierson away and shoved him back and he, John Rierson and some one seemed to get into a fight and threw some rocks and then James Rierson jumped up and run to where his brother John Rierson was and he James Rierson and George Boyd and Iram Aldridge began to fight and then James Rierson cried out some one has killed me.
I am positive at that time no one was close enough to have used a knife except George Boyd and Iram Aldridge and when James Rierson cried I am killed the two boys George Boyd and Iram Aldridge run.
Samuel G. (his X mark) Stump

Third witness:  John C. Rierson after being duly sworn

In the start I was very full of whisky and don’t recollect much about it.  First I recollect was they in J. T. Aldridge’s meadow was fighting Iram Aldridge.  When they began to throw rocks I run.
I suppose I was fifteen or twenty yards from my brother when he cried I am killed.  When he hollowed (hollered) George Boyd and Iram Aldridge run.  If there was any one else except them I didn’t see them.  I heard no threat.
Signed:  John C. Rierson

Fourth witness:  Andrew J. Yopp after being duly sworn

I was not there at the time of the murder.  I saw Iram Aldridge with a knife about dark and said if any one jumped on him he could keep them off.  I don’t know what he done with the knife.  I heard James Rierson or his brother John Rierson one say I am going back to kill W. C. Walters and Carl Aldridge or die himself.  I don’t know to which of the two men said it as they both were together at this time.
Andrew J. (his X mark) Yopp

Fifth witness:  George W. Boyd after being duly sworn

First of the fuss James Rierson came up to where Samuel Stump and myself had hold of W. C. Walters and knocked him down and jumped on him and John Rierson run up and hit him two or three licks with his fist.  Iram Aldridge walked up and told him for two not to get on one.  And John Rierson made at Iram Aldridge and Iram hit him with a rock and I threw a rock at him myself and missed him and James Rierson saw him throw this rock and he made at him and hit him two or three licks with his fist.  Iram threw something and ran.  And when Iram started to run I run too.  I never heard Mr. James Rierson hollow out I am killed.  I never told any one that Iram Aldridge had killed James Rierson with a rock.
When William Furrow called to me that James Rierson was killed and told me to stop and waited till he came up I had never been at Mr. J. T. Aldridge’s house after the fight before William Furrow called to me to stop.  There was no one except myself and Iram Aldridge closer than fifteen feet.
Signed:  George W. Boyd

Sixth witness:  Iram T. Aldridge after being duly sworn

James Rierson came up and knocked W. C. Walters down and jumped on him and went to beating him.  I am positive that he was beating him.
John Rierson went up and hit him over the head.  I went up and took John Rierson by the arm and told him that one man was enough to jump on him.
Then he started to pick up a rock.  I had one and threw and hit him.  I had the rock to be ready for him.  James Rierson came down there and hit me four licks with his fist and stepped on my overshoe and pulled it off.  I was running.  I did not stop to pick up my over shoe.
I did not throw any over shoe at James Rierson or any thing else at him as I started to run.  George Boyd was with me right by my side no one close(r) than eight or ten feet when I started to run.
I did not hear him cry out that some one has killed me.
My father and George Boyd was with me when I first heard he was dead.  I never heard William Furrow call to George Boyd to stop and we never stopped till I got to my father in the orchard near the house.
My father never asked me when I got to him if any one was hurt.  At the time George Boyd and myself started to run there was no one close enough to him to have cut him with a knife.
At the time William Furrow told my father and I about him being dead my father never said any thing to me about going back out there when William Furrow came out there and told us that he was dead he did not ask for a lantern.
I do know that Samuel Stump and William Furrow one or the other stayed there all the time.
Signed:  Iram T. Aldredge

Seventh witness:  W. C. Walters after being duly sworn

Says that he was crazy drunk and did not no (know) anything about the murder of James Rierson and I have no relection (recollection) of James Rierson jumping on me for a fight on the night of the murder of James Rierson.
W. C. (his X mark) Walters

Eighth witness:  Martha W. Rierson after first being duly sworn

Iram T. Aldredge & George Boyd came here early that morning and ast he James Rierson to go with them to John Rierson’s.  I Martha Rierson his wife wanted to insult Iram Aldredge & make him leave.  James Rierson sayes do not don’t have any more of them mad at me.  When Iram Aldredge came here that morning and when James come into the kitchen where I was he came through the hall where he was and watch after him.  He seemed to try to hear or up to some mischief.  This was before 12 o’clock in the morning.  I did not know when they left here where they was going.  I did not know there was any thing wrong before.  It seemed as if Iram Aldredge was trying to keep us from having a private conversation.
Signed:  Martha W. Rierson

Ninth witness:  Dr. E. L. Lawrence, Co. Coroner, after being duly sworn

Dec. 31st 1907.  I examined James Rierson and found a stab wound in the neck just above collar bone on the left side, a little to the left of the median line which penetrated the lung cavity.  Said wound severed the carotid artery and several other smaller blood vessels.  A great deal of hemorage internally.  The left pleural sack was practically full of blood.  This wound was sufficient to cause almost instant death.  Examined by H. W. Simmons, Commonwealth Aty.
Dr. you are here shown a knife that is said to have been found near where the deceased came to his death.  From the examination of the wound, and the clothing of the deceased including his coat, vest and shirt to you think that the knife now handed to you inflicted the fatal wound.  Answer.  I do not.
Signed:  E. L. Lawrence M.D. *

Tenth witness:  C. M. Aldredge after first being duly sworn

I did not borrow James W. Rierson knife at any time during the day that James W. Rierson was murded that night.
Signed:  C. M. Aldridge
