William
served during the Civil War as a Private in Co. I, 48th Virginia
Regiment. One time their position was overrun, as the story
goes. He and a relative of his, Rev. Henry Clay Butt, were in the
ammunition tent at the time of the attack. Henry Clay took immediate
action by having Bill sit on a powder keg and started praying for the
soul of this poor sinner in a loud voice. When the Yanks came upon this
scene they backed out and were never aware of what was stored there.
The enemy was forced back and all was well for the day. This story has
circulated both in the Warren and Butt families.
After
William was released from service, and before the Confederate Army
outgrew their need for a daily ration of brandy, he obtained a contract
with the government to distill both apple and peach brandy with the
army furnishing the fruit. He was paid ten cents a gallon upon
delivering it to the Army Quartermaster. It has been said that the hogs
downstream from his home on Rattle Creek, enjoyed the days when the
mash was released into the creek.
Harold Warren told me that
the story goes that the only argument that Wm & Tarisa ever had
was over this brandy making.

Federal Census for Washington County, Virginia from Bill

319/319
William Warren 35, Farmer; Tarisa 33 Housekeeper;
Minerva 11;
Elizabeth 9; Basil 7; Spencer 6; Margaret 3;
Martha 1.
After Tarisa died, William married
again. Story has it that his daughters didn't like that one bit, and
figured his 20 yr old wife could tote the water from the spring and do
his wash, etc. I have a photo copy of the marriage license.
This
info came from Sherri Warren
There is
a twist with William's second wife. Sarah Arnold is also Gracie's
mother. She married a Joe Snead after William pasted away.
For a while now I keep asking Gracie questions because her mind is
still excellent and her memory from the past is excellent. I kept
asking her why would Sarah Arnold her mother want to marry William
Warren when she was only 20 yrs. old and William was 72 yrs
old!!! She avoided the subject for along time and said that
you didn't usually talk about those things. Like I told her once she
was gone a part of the past was gone!!
It ended up being
that Sarah was pregnant by a man who left her and William married her
to cover it up. To me it would have still drawn attention because of
their age difference!!! I was told there was three children
that I was told that was born with him and her but only have two. I
have a picture of the baby George Washington Warren and one of
Luthishia Warren Hardison that I was told was his true children but who
the third one was I am not sure of. Luthisha I know for sure was his
daughter.
