Sarah Alice Iantha Barrett was born in Madison County, Texas. The daughter of John Whitten Barrett and Hulda Reding Barrett, her father wrote in his bible "Sarah Alice I. Barrett forth daughter was borned May 12, 1858".In 1877 a Mrs. Alice Barrett Ishtar ( believed by researchers to be Sarah Alice) witnessed the marriage of her brother Luthur Monroe Barrett in June of that year. However we have found no record of this marriage.
Sarah married JamesBuchannan "Buck" Manning on July 3, 1878 in Madison County, Texas. In 1880 Madison County census they are listed as living there and james was a farmer and 23 years old. Alice is 22 years old and a housekeeper. They have one child John I. Manning who is 10 months old. Most Barrett researchers list her as Sarah Alice and the Manning researchers list her as Alice Iantha. Her headstone says Alice I. Manning.
Sarah and James had eight children, they were: John Iredell Manning born August 21, 1879 in Madison County, Texas and died on February 23, 1961 in Madison County, Texas. He married Prudence Polk in Madison County and they had four children.
Florence Manning, Jewell Ona Manning born in January 11, 1909 who married William Hayes Rhodes, Melvin Idie Manning born August 11, 1907 and died July 30, 1983, he married Decy Ozelle Taylor, they had 5 children. And Billy Boy Manning born January 5, 1915. Billy Manning was born on January 5, 1915 and married Orene Rhodes. They had three children and Billy Boy and his wife are also buried in Burroughs Cemetery. For more information on them see his biography. John Iredell Manning and his wife Prudence Polk Manning are both buried in Burroughs Cemetery.
The second child of Sarah and Buck was Hulda A. Manning, she was born on March 22, 1881 and died October 15, 1960, in Huntsville. She married Dempsey Brack McDonald August 9, 1899, in Madison County, Texas. They had one daughter, Ruthie Lee McDonald, born January 19, 1914 In Madison County, died April 5, 1990, in Walker County. Ruthie Lee married a Mr. Tatum. After Dempsey's death on September 6, 1936, Hulda married a Mr. Goolsby. She was living in Huntsville with her daughter Ruthie when she died in 1960.
Hulda and Dempsey are both buried in Burroughs Cemetery with her parents. Hulda's grave is unmarked.
The third child born was James Buchannan Manning Jr., born on January 8, 1884 and died September 12, 1884. at only 7 months, 4 days old. He was laid to rest in Burroughs Cemetery with his mother's family.
The fourth child born to Sarah and Buck was Martha V. Manning on September 29th 1885 then less than a month later on October 14, 1885, the baby girl died in Madison County, Texas. Once again Sarah and Buck laid another of their children to rest in Burroughs Cemetery.
Next child born was Lila Manning in January 1886, she married Walter Randolph. She died in 1936 and is buried in Addicks Addition Cemetery in Huntsville in Walker County.
Benjamin Franklin Manning was born June 12, 1892 and died April 15, 1958 in Carlisle, Texas. He married Maude Bell Barrett on May 9, 1909. Their children are Annie Mae Manning who died in Carlisle, Trinity, Texas and is buried in Carlisle Cemetery there. Ruby Elizabeth Manning born September 2, 1912 in Bedias, Madison County, Texas and died December 8, 1997 in Houston, Harris County, Ruby married Irvin Archie Jordy and had 5 children.
Sadie Augusta Manning born October 21, 1915 She married Currie Atmal Skains on June 21, 1934 and had five children. Lilla Juanita Manning born November 2, 1918 in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas. She died January 12, 1985 in Galveston, Texas. She married Elmer Leon Williams on December 19, 1937 in Carlisle, Texas. They had two children Wanda Williams and Virginia Bell Williams. Lilla is buried in Carlisle Cemetery in Carlisle, Texas
Nugent B. Manning was born June 12, 1892 in Madison Coutny , Texas. he lived to be about 3 1/2 years old, dying on 27 January 1896. He was the third child that Alice and Buck had buried in Burroughs cemetery who was less that four years old.
So much tragedy circled this couple's life. Two years later, Alice laid her husband to rest next to their children in the soil of Burroughs Cemetery on January 10, 1894.
Following is a scan of the obituary for Buck Manning and other family members, which was published in the local newspaper. This obituary was in the scrapbook of Mrs. Mollie Barrett Wright and was transcribed by her son, Jack L. Wright.

The son of John Manning and Martha Cook now has the inscription “In Memory of my dear Husband” on his headstone. Almost 30 years after her husband's death, Alice died on March 18, 1923. She was laid to rest next to her husband and children Nugent, Martha, and James and her parents along with several of her brothers and sisters in the little country cemetery known as Burroughs. Her inscription reads “Our Darling one hath gone before to greet us on the blissful shore”. Biography written by Janet Barrett Walker.
