The oldest daughter of Reuben Barrett was Mary. According to family records, she was born 13 May 1779 and died 12 August 1843 in Greenville District, South Carolina. The place of her birth has been variously stated as Virginia and South Carolina, but South Carolina seems more likely to be correct, since the Barretts were well established in Spartanburg by 1779.
On 5 December 1795, she married David (no middle name) Jackson. Again, she has been said to have married in Virginia, and this also seems to be highly unlikely.
The above dates were recorded by Dr. David Bunyan Jackson, a grandson of the above couple, presumably taken from a family Bible.
Note that David Jackson who married Mary Barrett DID NOT have a middle name or initial. Apparently, because his grandson was named David Bunyan Jackson, many people in the past assumed the grandfather also bore the B as a middle initial. Some have written that his middle name was Bruce, but there is absolutely no record of this.
Unfortunately, Dr. David B. Jackson replaced the original Tyger Baptist Cemetery tombstone of his grandmother Mary with a stone that has a dubious inscription and has confused several generations of Barrett researchers. The newer stone has a reference to Virginia.
Here is what Dr. Jackson wrote in his memoirs: Mary Jackson was a good woman and suffered much in her illness. She was buried in the Church Cemetery at Tiger Church a short distance from Tigerville, S. C. Her grave was marked with a plain rough stone bearing the inscription M. Jackson . Eighty three years after her death and burial I her grandson put a cement walk around and tomb to her grave. Grandfather David Jackson never married after her death. (D. B. Jackson, 1927)
We hope this explains why the Virginia reference is on Marys stone, and we encourage researchers to look at other states besides Virginia, when searching for the Barretts and Jacksons pre-South Carolina records.
Dr. Jackson wrote that David and Mary settled near the center of Highland Township close to the foot of Packs Mountain. He wrote further that Davids father-in-law Reuben came with him from Virginia (not accurate, since Reuben was in South Carolina much earlier) and that they lived on adjoining farms.
