Erastus Emery (Em) Sandel was born in 27 June 1836 in Pike County, Mississippi, to George Henry and Emily Sandel. The name is sometimes found as Sandell in Texas records.

George and Emily brought their family to Texas some time in the years between 1850 and 1860 and first settled in south Walker County, before buying land in west Walker County north of the Shiro-Huntsville Highway. They lived in the Loma Community.

E. E. (called Em by his family) joined the Danville Mounted Riflemen and is listed on the muster roll of the company for September 13, 1861. His sister Martha's husband, John E. George, was also in the Riflemen.

E. E. enrolled in Company I of the Ninth Regiment, Texas Infantry (Nichols') at Montgomery on October 10, 1861, a six-month regiment formed for the purpose of building fortifications for the defense of Galveston. His captain was R.F. Oliver. E. E. is listed on the muster rolls of December 1862 and February 1863. His muster-out roll is dated April 24, 1862.

The muster out roll reads in part: ...born in Pike Co, Mississippi, twenty-five years, Five feet nine inches, Fair complexion, Blue eyes, Dark hair, and by occupation, Farmer.

Upon mustering out of the Ninth (Nichols'), E. E. joined Company H of Elmore's Twentieth Texas Infantry along with several other members of Nichols'. Elmore's was a regiment of mostly middle aged men.

They spent most of their service in Louisiana and Texas. In the Elmore's records, Em's surname is spelled Sandal.

Before the end of the war, on 14 September 1864, Em married Rachel S. Lindley in Grimes County. She was born 6 April 1844 in Montgomery County, the daughter of William Lindley and Martha Jane Hostetter. Rachel was a niece of James, John, and Elijah Lindley. She was the granddaughter of John Hostetter. Also, she was the sister of Hannah Caroline Lindley who married Jesse C. McIntyre.

In 1870, E. E. and Rachel were living in Walker County in the same neighborhood as several other veterans of Capt. Wooldridge's companies. Em was a farmer with personal wealth and real estate valued at $1500.00.

According to Sandel researchers the couple spent most of their lives in Grimes County. Em died in March, 1901, in Wellborn, Brazos County, Texas.

Thanks to Charlotte Sandel Beck for much of the Sandel family information. (Charlotte passed away January 2, 2009.) Information on the Lindley family was compiled from Lindley family sources. Other records were consulted, including the Compiled Service Records of the Ninth Texas Infantry (Nichols') and census indexes.
