His mother moved her younger children to Texas in about 1858, and went to live with a married daughter in Walker County.
After 1850, William married Amanda Cheatham, probably in South Carolina. They apparently moved to Texas in late 1850s, missing the census taker in 1860. The couple had three children born in South Carolina and one in Texas.
Amanda was first cousin to Henry R. Golden and Thomas D. Golden.
On March 29, 1862, at Danville, William enlisted with Captain Samuel Wooldridge in the Second Texas Lancers. He gave his age as thirty-eight, and the number of miles from his home to rendezvous as fifty. He was mustered in on April 28th at Hempstead and trained with the other men of the regiment, presumably traveling with them to Arkansas Post.
On the muster roll dated June 30, 1862 -- April 30, 1863 there is a notation that William had been on detached service in Texas from December 15, 1862. This tells us that he did not fight in the Battle of Arkansas Post.
William Roten was the son of Thomas Roten and Lavicia Permenter and brother of David Edward Roten and Larkin J. Roten. The surname is often spelled Rotten. William was born in about 1823 in South Carolina and lived in Saluda County with his parents at the time of his father�s death in 1844. He was enumerated with his mother and brothers and sisters in the census of 1850 in Abbeville District.
We find no other muster roll in William�s file. He apparently died while on detached service in Texas, because his wife was married to Jacob Briant on 6 January 1867 in Montgomery County.
