STEPHEN REDING BARRETT

Civil War Soldier

Stephen Reding Barrett was born 8 Sept 1840 in Madisonville, Madison Co.,TX. He is one of the little known descendants to other Barrett researchers other than Davids line. He was the son of John Whitten Barrett and Hulda Reding and great grandson of Reuben Barrett.Stephen grew up in Madison County. He worked in his fathers store and on his farm.

On 7 Sept 1857 he married a local girl named Sarah "Sallie" Larrison, she was the daughter of Daniel Larrison and Sarah Greenwood Larrison.

In 1860 Sarah had their first son, Jonathan Daniel Barrett on 21 March.

Stephen Reding Barrett is shown in the 1860 census of Madison Co., as being 19 years old and a farmer, value of his real estate (farm) is $3000.00 and his personal value is $1200.00. It shows his wife is "Sallie" at 21 years old and one son Daniel at 3 months old. It shows that Stephen and Sarah lived next door to his mother and father. Also that Sallie's mother,Sarah Emma Greenwood Larrison lived with them.

After Stephens brother William joined the Civil War, Stephen did the same. He enlisted on 15 July 1862 in Walker Co., TX by Capitan B. W. Fisher. He was in Company G, 7th Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers. He served from July 15 until his death.

Four months after he died his second son was born, Steven Franklin Barrett on 19 April 1863 in Madison Co.,TX. Stephen died in a peach orchard as the family legend goes, of pneumonia, but his fathers bible states that he died of typhoid fever in Louisiana. The entry in the bible says, "He left this life while in the army of typhoid fever."

No one ever filed for a pension for him because his wife Sarah had remarried to Caleb Stanback Fraley, and was not eligible. On a list of Barrett's in the Civil War I find a S. Barrett from Texas in 7th Cav. Co. G, This is the only S. or Stephen Barrett that I found from Texas. I wrote to Washington DC for his military records and there are none.
