Hannah Barrett Toles

1797 ~ 1850

Hannah Barrett was born about 1797 in Greenville Dist., South Carolina.. She was the daughter of Reuben Barrett and Hannah Doty (?).

Hannahs mother died when Hannah was 13 years old and no doubt had to care for the younger children in the household. Arthur and William, Elizabeth and Prudence were all very young. Hannah's father, Reuben died when she was 17 years old in 1814. At first she took the younger girls to raise, then one of the girls went to Mary Barrett Jackson and the other to Peggy Barrett Prince, the older married sisters.

Hannah's father's will was entered into probate 17 Mar 1814 and he willed to his daughter" to Hannah, my daughter, one bed and furniture, one cow and calf and a fourteen dollar saddle to be bought for her when she marries or before if convienient." Hannah traveled to the south with her older brothers ,first to Alabama..

"At some point before 1826 Hannah left Greenville, apparently in the company of her brother Joseph, for Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. She was there witnessing a deed for Joseph (1) in November of 1825 (2)(one acre of land for a church, apparently Big Creek Baptist). However, on 17 May 1826 she signed a deed transferring her share of Reubens estate to her brother-in-law David Jackson, and at that time she was of Greenville. Although it would have been possible to execute the deed by mail, her signature was witnessed by Joel Youngblood who was a resident of Greenville. The original deed is in Dr. D. B. Jacksons papers, now in possession of Robert Jackson of Georgia.

"Interestingly, Hannah signed this deed with an X and a shaky one at that. Is it possible that Hannah had a physical or mental impairment? Her mother, Hannah, was able to sign her own name and it seems strange that young Hannah was not at least minimally educated.

"The existence of the foregoing deed with Hannahs signature seems to be proof that she returned to Greenville for a period of time; however, she married Suddeth eight months later (14 January 1827) in Tuscaloosa County. She was up in years for a first marriage, being close to 30 years old."

(All Paragraphs in " " are from Karen Hett (KH) Research, written in the eighties and revised in 1999 to include the Jackson documents.)

Hannah was to married Sudduth Toles almost 15 years later. They married on January 14, 1827 in Tuscaloosa District, Alabama. I have never seen any other records of her being married before she married Sudduth, but 35 years old seems like a long time before marriage in those days.(See Karen Hett theory above. If indeed she was mentally or physically impared this could be the reason she married so late in life. Also all her brothers and sisters were educated or could at least write their names. Her brotehrs Joseph and David both became school teachers. She is found in the 1830 Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama census.

Sudduth was a widow who had been married to Nancy Nolan on Aug 3, 1820b in Elbert County, GA. They had two children William M. born in 1821, Elizabeth born in 1824 . Sudduth was the son of James L. Toles and Pricilla Sudduth. Evidently Nancy died before 1827. Elizabeth was three years old, and was mentally challenged and classified as an "idiot" on the 1850 Madison County, MS census. Sudduth and Hannah had their first child in Dec. of 1828, James M. Toles, next Nancy A. Toles about 1832, Sarah Toles in 1837.

In 1837, James Toles and William Toles were both "bound out" by the orphan courts. "Doesn't this mean that they were bound as apprentices? Lots of parents, who didn't have enough money to send a son to school or didn't have a profession to pass on to the child, would bind the child as an apprentice to a friend, neighbor, or relative who might be a stone mason, brick layer, or blacksmith. The child would work for the adult while learning the profession. He would be provided food and a place to sleep, and perhaps a small allowance--which he often had to turn over to his parents."(KH)

"The apprenticeship typically last for years, but it was a set number of years that had been agreed on by the father and the professional person. Once the years were up, the boy was free to leave, or if he stayed, he would be paid for his work."(KH)

"This may be what you'll find in this situation. In fact, I'm thinking that this is 85 per cent a sure bet. If you get the records, it will say what the boy was bound for, but I'm just about positive it will name a profession and a length of time for the apprenticeship. Like, "bound for 5 years to Joe Smith in order to learn the bricklaying profession at his hands" or something like that."(KH)

We know that James Toles was a Tinner from the 1850 census records. "Janet--my unabridged Random House dictionary says that a tinner was a tinsmith. This would be a skill that would set him apart on a higher scale than a farmer. It might seem surprising to us these days, but blacksmiths and tinsmiths, and bricklayers were people to be admired because they had a marketable skill. They could move to any town in America and make a living. That makes me even more convinced that this is why the children were bound to him."(KH) Note: I am trying to order the court documents surrounding this case.(JBW)

That same year, Sudduth and Hannah had another daughter, Sarah Toles, 1837. sometime between 1837 and 1840 the Toles family went from Tuscaloosa Co.,Alabama to Madison Co., Mississippi. There is a Sudda Toles listed on the 1840 Madison Co. Census who some believe is this Toles family. There is one Female under 5 (Sarah) Fem btwn 5-10 (Nancy) Fem btwn 10-15(?) fem btwn 20-30 (Elizabeth) male under 5 (?) male btwn 10-15 (James?) male btwn 40-50 (Sudduth). If this is Sudduth and Hannah, where was Hannah and who are the other children, James was with John Nolan.

In 1842 another daughter is born, Mary R. Toles in Mississippi, then 1844 Martha Toles and in 1847 Lucy Toles was born.

Another big question comes up when we look at the 1850 Hinds Co. MS census. we have Sudduth age 58 a Farmer his land worth $200.00, Hannah age 42, Elizabeth at age 26 still at home and classified as an "idiot", Sarah 13, Martha 6, Lucy 3 and Nancy Henry 18 all living together on December 11, 1850. Nancy married Hugh Henry on 5 Aug 1850 in Hinds Co,MS, so why was she living with with her parents and not with her husband four months after the wedding? And where is Hugh Henry?

And then on 29 Nov 1850 we have in the same county, William Toles age 29 a farmer, his land worth $800.00, Mary A. aged 23 born in Ala and Mary R Toles aged 8 born in Mississippi and attending school, also James M. Toles aged 23 and working as a Tinner. There is also a Alexander McKenzie aged 15 living in the household. Why is Mary R. living with her brother and not with her mother and father and sisters? It is possible the Mary A.'s last name is McKenzie and Alexander is her brother.

On March 11, 1854 we found a Guardianship Bond applied for by Sudduth Toles for the "Orphan" Elizabeth P. Tolles. At this time Elizabeth is 31 years old. I believe she was put into a home, but I need to make sure that is what it means. I will order the papers for the bond.

Documents

There are not many records of Hannah and Sudduths life, nor have I found any descendants of Hannah and Sudduth Toles. The records I have come across are Sudduth served in the Military in 1815 in Georgia in 19th Regt of Georgia. Sudduth purchased land in 1819 in Wilkes County,GA and also bought land from the other heirs of his father James Toles Sr in 1819.

Notes for HANNAH BARRETT: Plaintiff with Mary Jackson, David Jackson, Margaret Prince, Henry Prince, Prudence P Barrett, Betsey W Barrett against David Barrett and John Barrett. Equity Case No. 6, Greenville District, South Carolina on 3 Feb 1823. Witnessed a deed from James Hendricks to Joseph Barrett, Charles Pate, Henry Fox as deacons of the Big Creek Baptist Church 12 Nov 1825 Tuscaloosa, Alabama Deed Book F, pg 168,169 This family may have moved from Vernon, Madison County, Mississippi to Raymond, Hinds County, Mississippi after the 1850 census No grave markers found at either place.. Source: Gerry Dickens File

From Karen Hett Letters: Another interesting paper is the deed showing sister Hannah selling her share of the estate to David Jackson. Also interesting is that she sells 1/12 of the estate, which means that David's and John's shares were taken away from them by the judge when the equity suit was settled. There were supposed to be 14 shares. I had not noticed that (reduction to 12 shares)

A document dated 7 January 1837 in Tuscaloosa Co.,AL from the orphans court states that Sudduth Toles first three children were "bound out" by the orpahns court. All this information is from Helen Allen Family Sheet sent to me on 01-31-01. James M. Toles was "bound out" to John Nolan on 7 Jan 1837 until he reached a lawful age. He was nine years old. John Nolan could have been Nancy's brother. I have not researched this.

There is also a document that states Sudduth Toles applied for a Guardianship Bond for Elizabeth Toles on March 11, 1854 in Hinds Co.,MS

Children of Sudduth Toles and Hannah Barrett

Deborah Biggs who is a David Barrett descendant is being kind enough to help me research this line since we hardley have anything on it. Hopefully we will end up finding descendants.

We will list additional information on the children here until we get more of it.

Death:

Mary is buried in Elam Baptist Church Cemetery in Jenkins Co., GA., with her children. Her headstone says: Mary C. Towles Wever b. 24 Nov 1868 d. 22 Aug 1881 but I believe this is either a typo on transcription or her children thought this was her birth year. She is buried between Jonathan Wever, a baby who was born 30 Mar 1857 and died 22 Aug 1858, this could have been one of Mary's children as it was not a census year when he was born and died. There was a Johnathan Weaver who l lived with her and Pickens in the 1860 census, I believe it is Pickens brother. On the other side is her daughter Ada D. (should be O. is a typo) Clifton.
