PRUDENCE PLUMLEY BARRETT WARD
"PRUDDY"
1806 ~
Prudence Plumlay Barrett was born in Greenville District South Carolina in 1806 to Reuben Barrett and it is believed that her mother was Hannah Doty. She was only 4 years old when her mother died and 8 years old when her father died. She was raised by her siblings amongst a family fight over her fathers will and estate. She was either raised by her sister Mary Barrett Jackson or her sister Margaret Barrett Prince after her parents died.
In her fathers will she was given an extra $50.00 so that she would be equal to the older siblings. The estate was kept together and working in order to provide for her care and to pay for her education. When her youngest sister came of age the estate was sold and the money divided, but not before a heated string of lawsuits and accusations over it.
In about 1830 she married William J. Ward who was born in 1803 in London, England. The two married in South Carolina
Prudie died before 1870 in Leake Co.,MS, she is buried at Fryery Cemetery or at Mars Hill Baptist Cemetery there. There have been reports of her being buried at both cemeteries.
There has been some speculation that Prudence was married to a William W. Ward, however there is a letter in existence that William Ward wrote and he signed it William J. Ward, therefore this is solid evidence that he was indeed William J. Ward. Also some speculation she was married to a Phillip Ward, which no evidence has ever been found to substantiate this.
