INTRODUCTION

The chief source of data for the early Showalters is Rev. Paul Schowalter’s Genealogical Book of the Showalter Family, (1979) which was translated into English by Richard L. Showalter and has been presented to the Mennonite Heritage Center by Roy Moab Showalter.

Fig. 1 outlines my Showalter line of descent down to emigrant Heinrich Schowalter.  Note that in two descendancy stages (G à E) and (D à C), Rev. Paul was unable to determine from the records available which of two links was the correct one to be used.  I have attempted to show this situation by merging two descendancy lines into one with a “?” between them.

In 1936 the Schowalter name, with 98 persons, was the third most common name in the Mennonite congregations of the Palatinate, exceeded only by Krehbiel and Stauffer.  The chief congregations with numerous Schowalters were Deutschof-Geisberg (24), Monsheim-Obersuelzen (20), Neudorferhof (17) and Ludwigshafen (8).[1]

Fig. 2 outlines my Showalter line of descent starting with emigrant Heinrich/Henry Showalter.

I.                   HANS SCHONWALDER

HANS SCHONWALDER is first found in 1566 in the Strengelbach area where he owed a tax.[2] Strengelbach was in the Canton of Bern (now Aargau), Switzerland, near Zofingen which is half-way between Luzern and Basel (figs. 3 & 4). Zofingen was the last site of Mennonites in the Canton of Aargau.  As late as 1720 Hans Bachmann removed from Aargau to the Palatinate.[3]

According to Heinrich Fehr, a “Schonwalder” is a man who lives in a protected forest, i.e., a forest which is not cut for wood or timber but is protected so as to act as a barrier to catch and hold the snow in case of an avalanche.  The Schowalters were of the Mennonite faith.

The wife of Hans has not been identified and the only child identified is SILVESTER SCHOWALDER.

H.                SILVESTER SCHOWALDER

SILVESTER SCHOWALDER was born ca. 1550, married (1) BARBLIN HUNTZINGER, married (2) ANNA WIDMER.  Was Anna Widmer a daughter of Joseph Widmer, a Mennonite preacher who was seized in Feb. 1649 in the Emmental District, Canton of Bern, Switzerland?[4]

The children of Silvester & Barblin (Huntzinger) Schowalder were all baptized in Strengelbach:

i.                     VRENI SCHOWALDER, baptized 12 Apr. 1573.

ii.                   ULY SCHOWALDER, baptized 3 July 1575.

iii.                  FRIEDLY SCHOWALDER, baptized 13 Oct. 1577

iv.                 CASPER SCHOWALDER, baptized 10 May 1579.

JAKOB (II) SCHOWALDER, baptized in Strengelbach 9 Feb. 1617

and:

JAKOB (III) SCHOWALDER, baptized 25 June 1620, married MARGARETHA LUETWYLER.  They had the following two children, both baptized in Strengelbach:

i.                     ELSBETH SCHOWALDER, baptized 26 Oct. 1645.

ii.                   JAKOB (IV) SCHOWALDER, baptized 18 June 1648 in Strengelbach, died Apr. 1731 in Schafbusch (near Wissembourg).

E.                 JAKOB (V) SCHOWALDER

JAKOB (V) SCHOWALDER was either Jakob (II) Schowalder’s son or Jakob (IV) Schowalder.

The Schowalder family, along with a Dettweiler family, was expelled from Zofingen, Switzerland, by 1700 and removed to the Wissembourg area of Alsace et Lorraine, France. Upward of 2,400 Mennonites, mostly from Switzerland, were believed to live in Alsace at that time due to persecution by the Swiss government.[5] The Schowalders settled on a large farm called Schafbusch two miles east of Wissembourg in Alsace and the Dettweilers in Riedseltz (fig. 5).  They were tenant farmers.  The Catholic land owners knew from experience that these Mennonites industriously performed their labors and promptly paid their tithes.[6]  Other Mennonite families on the Schafbusch farm included Muellers, Borkholders, Webers, Schmitts, Hirshlers and Kraemers. They formed the Geisberg-Niederroedern congregation.  In 1776 it was called the Schafsbusch-Roederen-Geisberg congregation.  Services were held in a room reserved for that purpose, called the “Kirchenstube.”  Later, when the meetings were held in rotation on the various farms, the communion services were still held at Schafbusch.  In 1860, when the estate passed into non-Mennonite hands, Geisberg became the meeting center.[7]

The children of Jakob (V) probably included:

i.                     JAKOB (VI) SCHOWALTER, (See ¶D. below).

ii.                   ULRICH SCHOWALTER (See ¶D. below).

D.                JAKOB (VI) & ULRICH SCHOWALTER

Here again, two descendancy lines are possible:

JAKOB (VI) SCHOWALTER probably married KATHARINA [-?-]. She was born in Switzerland in May 1680, died 13 June 1727 in Schafbusch, Alsace.

and:

ULRICH SCHOWALTER signed with his mark 8 Jan. 1723 an inheritance inventory document of the manor estate in Niederroedern (fig. 6). Hans Kreybuehel (Krehbiel) and his wife Anna Schowalter were among the heirs named in this document.  Anna was born ca. 1698.[8]

C.                 HANS SCHOWALTER

HANS SCHOWALTER was probably a son of either Jakob (VI) or Ulrich Schowalter above.  He was born ca. 1700 at Geisberg (fig. 6), married KATHARINA KREHBIEL ca. 1726, died 1767 in Geisberg.  Katharina was a daughter of Jost & Magdalena Krehbiel of Pfrimmerhof. She was born ca. 1700 in Alsace.[9]   The first Krehbiel to emigrate from the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, was Jost Krähenbühl who, with others, went to the Palatinate in 1671.  In 1709 he purchased the Pfrimmerhof near Sippersfeld.[10]

Johan Casper von Hatzel, “His Royal Majesty, Councelor and Governor of the Hinterlands of Alsace,” had a castle built in Geisberg in 1711-1716.  It was built by the Mennonite farmers in the area.

By 1728 Hans & Katharina were renting the Diefenbacherhof near Reidseltz.  Since 1371 Diefenbacherhof had been under German rule.

A high-ranking government official named Belgrois in 1699 made an official judgment of the Mennonites in the Riedseltz area (which included Schafbusch).  His ruling was short and to the point: “They (the Mennonites) cleaned the land and put it back into productivity (by clearing off the wild-growing brush).  These people do not bother or hinder anyone, but live very peaceably.”

On 28 Apr. 1752 at a Mennonite conference of bishops and ministers of sundry lands held at Steinselz (near Schafbusch), various rules of conduct were drawn up.  Included among them were prohibition of the use of tobacco, shaving the beard and immodesty in dress.[11]

In addition to his profession as a farmer, Hans was a preacher or elder of his Mennonite congregation.  In 1762, a group of Palatine Mennonites visited Schafbusch and Niederroedern to minister unto the Swiss.  They brought back testimony and thankfulness for their good works signed by Hans Greibueiel (Krehbiel), Jakob Lehmen (Lehmann), Hans Schowalter and Johan Miller.  “All are Servants of the Lord & Elders.”[12]

The children of Hans & Katharina (Krehbiel) Schowalter were:

i.                     JOHANNES SCHOWALTER  (See ¶B. below).

ii.                   KATHARINA SCHOWALTER, born ca. 1729, married HEINRICH HIRSCHLER of Schafbusch, died 18 Feb. 1810. The Hirschler family had emigrated from Switzerland to the Geisberg area of Alsace soon after 1700.[13]

iii.                  ULRICH SCHOWALTER, born ca. 1730 in Geisberg, married MARIA LEHMANN in 1758 in Geisberg, Alsace, died 28 Dec. 1796. Maria, born ca. 1731, died 10 Jan. 1797.  The children of Ulrich & Maria (Lehmann) Schowalter were:

B.           JOHANNES SCHOWALTER

JOHANNES SCHOWALTER was born in 1720, perhaps in Geisberg,[35] married (1) [-?-] [-?-] ca. 1739, married (2) BARBARA EYMANN after 1745/7, died ca. 1791 in Kirchheim an der Eck.[36]  His first wife died 1753/4 in Kirchheim an der Eck.[37] Barbara was born 24 Feb. 1728 at Niederroedern, Schlosshof, died ca. 1791.  She was a daughter of Christian & Anna (Gerber) Eymann.  According to “Eymann Family History & Genealogy” written by Peter Eymann in 1864 and translated into English by Albert J. Ruth in 1967, Christian Eymann was born 28 Apr. 1701 on the Sionerhof-Mauchenheim by Alzey in the Palatinate.  He first resided on a leasehold estate in Niederroedern in Alsace, then at Donnersberg, then on the Von Der Muehlenschen farm. He died on 30 Mar. 1767 in Kindenheim bei Grünstadt. His wife, Anna Gerber, was born 24 June 1706 in Schwammboden-Kirchspiel, Schwarsenegg, Switzerland, died 14 Feb. 1786 in Kindenheim bei Grünstadt.  Christian & Anna were married 8 Aug. 1724 in Lohmühle-Langmeil bei Winnweiler.[38]  Lyle von Riesen ([email protected]), Heinz Sprenger ([email protected]) and Michael Hervey ([email protected]) have kindly provided much to the following data on the descendants of Johannes Schowalter.

According to research done at Landesarchiv Speyer, Johannes lived from 1743 until 1759 at Erbesbuedesheim.[39]  He then lived at Kirchheim an der Eck – now known simply as Kirchheim (fig. 11).  Mennonite families paid taxes annually to the government for protection.  Tax rolls for Erbesbuedesheim contain the following entries:[40]

-         1743: Johannes Schowalter, wife, 2 sons, 1 daughter & 1 farmhand since 1743 at Erbesbuedesheim.

-         1753: Johannes Schowalter, wife, son, 2 daughters.

On 17 Apr. 1770, Johannes was “confirmed as the oldest resident” according to a letter from Jakob Hirschler of Gerolsheim to his colleagues Peter Jutzy of Klinkarlbach and Johannes Barkholder of Hoeningen.  Jacob Hirschler was elder of the Mennonite congregation of Gerolsheim from 1758 to 1782.[41] Peter Jutzy was a preacher there from 1765 until after 1802.[42] In 1792 Johannes was referred to for the last time in a notarized document.

Mennonite families were permitted in the Palatinate as early as 1664 under Elector Karl Ludwig.  He gave this permission with a number of stipulations, however.  The Mennonites were allowed to have meetings for worship, but not in public church buildings, and in no case could any such meeting be attended by more than twenty persons.  The practice of baptism was forbidden the Mennonites.  They were informed that they must furnish the authorities lists of the names of all members of their congregations, and these lists must be revised as newcomers arrived.  Every Mennonite family was under obligation to give three florins “protection money” the first year, and six florins annually thereafter to the authorities. These and various other restrictions imposed upon Mennonites show that they did not have the recognized rights of citizenship; they were merely tolerated on certain conditions.

The known children of Johannes by his first wife were:

i.                     MARGARETE SCHOWALTER, born 1746 in Erbesbuedesheim, married RUDOLF ELLENBERGER 25 Feb. 1772, died 17 Mar. 1821 at Ruessingen at 75 years of age.  Rudolf was born 15 Sep. 1726, died 2 Sep. 1799.  He was from Rüssingen (fig. 9).

Abraham was born 11 Sept. 1782 in Böchingen, a son of Abraham Ellenberger & Christiana Graf of Boechingen and a brother of Elisabeth Ellenberger (see ¶B.iv. above). Boechingen is in Germany, about 13 miles NNE of Wissembourg.

The known children of Abraham & Elisabeth (Schowalter) Ellenberger were:

a.       PETER ELLENBERGER, born 12 Nov. 1805 in Ruchheim, died 12 Feb. 1826 in Ruchheim.[62]

b.      ABRAHAM SCHOWALTER, born 8 July 1807.

c.       CHRISTINA ELLENBERGER, born 18 Nov. 1809 in Ruchheim, died 13 Feb. 1896 in Nawarya, Galicia..  On 19 Nov. the birth record was signed by Didier Charles Hausam, Mayor of Ruchheim. Witnesses were George Phillippe Nau (age 42) and André Mersinger (age 51), both farmers (fig. 10). The birth record was in French since all of Germany west of the Rhine was under French rule from 1794 to 1814.[63] Christina married PETER SCHOWALTER (see ¶iv. below).

d.      HEINRICH ELLENERGER, born 8 June 1813 in Ruchheim.

ii.                   CATHARINA (KATHARINA/CHRISTIANA) SCHOWALTER, born 1780, married CHRISTIAN STAUFFER of Joehlingen 18 Apr. 1807, died in Mar. 1822 in Ruchheim.  Christian was born 1756 in Untergrimperm, died 23 Mar. 1834.  The children of Christian & Catharina (Schowalter) Stauffer were all born in Ruchheim:

a.       CATHARINA STAUFFER, born 7 Apr. 1811.

b.      CHRISTIAN STAUFFER, born 1814.

c.       CHRISTIAN STAUFFER, born 1817.

iii.                   HEINRICH SCHOWALTER (see ¶1. below).

iv.                 PETER SCHOWALTER, born 16 Oct. 1790 (or 16 Apr. 1789) at Ruchheim, married (1) ELISABETH HAUSAM 24 Aug. 1809, married (2) his niece CHRISTINA ELLENBERGER, died 11 Feb. 1860. Elisabeth was born 1787. Christina was born 18 Nov. 1809 at Ruchheim, died 13 Feb. 1896 in Nawarya, Galicia (now in SE Poland).  She was a daughter of Abraham Ellenberger and Elisabeth Schowalter. Elisabeth (Schowalter) Ellenberger was Peter’s sister (see ¶i. above).

Peter & Christina had a daughter CHRISTINA SCHOWALTER, born 21 Nov. 1844, married JAKOB STAUFFER of Galicia in 1863, died 25 Dec. 1914 in Galicia.  Jakob was born 2 Feb. 1835 in Hemshof, died 29 May 1916 in Potsadki, Galicia.  He was a son of Jakob Stauffer & Barbara Schowalter.

1.         HEINRICH/HENRY SCHOWALTER/SHOWALTER

HEINRICH/HENRY SCHOWALTER/SHOWALTER, born in 1789 in Ruchheim, Canton of Mutterstadt, married MARGARET (MAGDALENA) WIESLER/WISSLER/WIESSLER 26 Jan. 1815, died before 1850 in Van Wert Co., Ohio.  Margaret was born ca. 1793, died probably before 1850 in Allen Co. or Van Wert Co. She was a daughter of Johannes Wiesler & Anna Kindig/Kündig from Mutterstadt (see “Our Wiesler/Wiessler/Wissler Line,” #A).

We know that our Schowalter family departed Le Havre, France, aboard the Henri IV in 1836.  Why they decided to emigrate can only be surmised.  The United States was experiencing a period of flush times.  On the other hand, the Germans were expecting a famine as severe as that which followed 1816.  Instead of the bulk of the emigrants being made up of single young men, an increasing proportion now consisted of family groups.[64]

The European relocations of Heinrich and his ancestors from as far back as is known are shown in figure 11.

No doubt their first question was, “How can we reach the sea?”  Living near the Rhine River, the obvious answer was to proceed down the river to ports in the Netherlands.  Traditionally the Dutch shippers had made the most of this natural advantage by developing a passenger business employing the redemptioner system (i.e., the emigrant obtained passage by becoming an indentured servant).  But when that system was abrogated, the Dutch found it difficult to compete with ports which, maintaining steady commercial relations with the New World, were able to transport emigrants as a business incidental to their main purpose. Le Havre, France, was the first outlet to the sea to gain prominence, due primarily to the importation of raw cotton for overland transport to the cotton mills in the hills of Alsace. To handle this trade, new transatlantic ships were built, the docks of Le Havre were enlarged, steamboats and barges multiplied on the Seine, and hundreds of freight wagons were placed upon the roads of eastern France.[65]

We don’t know if our Schowalter family used these wagons but Franz Eicher did in the spring of 1833.  He reported that at the French border the teamsters weighed all the baggage and women and small children and charged 15 francs for each 100 pounds to be hauled.  The men and boys and all able-bodied women and girls had to walk.  It took the Eicher family a month to cross France to Le Havre.[66] Most of the emigrants, however, started toward the West in the style of their American contemporaries – in covered wagons.  The family carriage was arched with sailcloth and the interior packed with women, children and baggage.  At Paris the horses were sold and the journey on to Le Havre continued by steamboat.  Others avoided Paris and traveled by road directly to Le Havre where the wagons were oftentimes taken apart and packed in the hold of the ship, to be reassembled upon reaching the American shore for traveling over the mountains into the West.[67]

Another unknown is how our Schowalters arranged passage on the Henri IV from Le Havre to New York City.  Recruiting agents from emigration business houses at Le Havre would journey a day or two along the road to meet the advancing Germans.  Later on they extended their operations by opening local offices within Germany and Switzerland.[68] Regardless of what arrangements our Schowalters made, no doubt they needed accommodations in Le Havre while awaiting the departure of the Henri IV.  In all these cases the emigrants were frequently overcharged.

The square-rigged ship Henri IV was built in New York by Christian Bergh & Co. in 1826, 116' in length with a 28' - 8" beam and a 14' - 4" depth of hold.  Her displacement was 427 tons.[69] She was the smallest ship in Francis Depau’s “Havre Old Line” packet service.  Francis Depau had married Silvie, the daughter of Count de Grasse (victor of the Chesapeake Capes in 1781).  As a young girl, she had fled from France to Charleston during the French Revolution.[70] In spite of her small size, the Henri IV was credited with the quickest westward port-to-port passage of 20 days.[71] Her average westward passage was 36 days and her longest 55 days.[72] The shortest sea-lane distance as used by sailing packets between Le Havre and New York was 3,163 miles.[73] In the early 1830s the cost of steerage passage was 120-150 francs.[74] The “Old Line Havre Packet” ships were scheduled to depart Le Havre the 15th of each month.[75] We know that our Schowalter family arrived New York City 16 Sep. 1836 aboard the Henri IV.[76] So maybe they departed Le Havre 15 Aug. 1836.

The List or Manifest of all Passengers taken on-board the ship Henri IV whereof Kearney is Master, from Havre Burthen 427 30/95th tons lists:

-         6 farmers who belong to France, bound for U.S.

-         100 farmers who belong to Germany, bound for U.S.

-         2 cabin passengers who belong to France, bound for New Orleans

-         2 cabin passengers who belong to France, bound for U.S.

for a total of 110 passengers.  Included in this list is our Schowalter family:

-         Hien Schowalter, 46, M

-         Margt, 43, F

-         Martin, 18, M

-         Hien, 15, M

-         Anna, 13, F.

Immediately above our Schowalter family in the list is:

-         Jno Hausam, 45, M

-         Susana, 40, F

-         Anna Maria, 22, F

-         Peter, 19, M

-         Michel, 17, M

-         Johan, 14, M

-         Jacbo [Jacob?], 13, M.

And immediately below our Schowalter family in the list is:

-         Geo. Hausam, 30, M

-         Martin, 1, M.

Another family on the list is:

-         Jacob Filbert, 30, M

-         Cathn, 32, F

-         Martin, 12, M

-         Anna Maria, 10, F

-         Elizabeth, 5, F

-         Michel, 5, M

-         Peter, 6 mos., M.

We know that our Heinrich Schowalter’s brother Peter Schowalter married (1) Elizabeth Hausam 24 Aug. 1809 (see ¶A.ii. above).  Peter married (2) Christina Ellenberger who was born 18 Nov. 1809 in Ruchheim.  Perhaps this indicates that Elizabeth Hausam was also from the Ruchheim area. Didier Charles Hausam was the mayor of Ruchheim in 1809 when he signed Christine Ellenberger’s birth record (see ¶A.iii.a. above).

There was also a Catharina Elisabetha Hausam born 23 Sept. 1803 in Ruchheim, married (1) Martin Lauer 25 Feb. 1823 in Ruchheim, married (2) Jacob Peter Filbert 24 June 1835 in Ruchheim.  By her first husband, Martin Lauer, Catharina had the following children, all born in Ruchheim:

-         Martin Lauer, born 18 Jan. 1824

-         Anna Maria Lauer, born 8 Aug. 1826

-         Elizabetha Lauer, born 14 Jan. 1829

-         Elizabetha Lauer, born 22 May 1831.

By her second husband, Jacob Peter Filbert, Catharina had a son Peter Filbert, born 29 Jan. 1836 in Ruchheim.[77] This family definitely was on the Henri IV with our Showalters.  According to Bob Hitchcock ([email protected]), Michael Filbert, age 5, was a son of Jacob Filbert by a previous marriage.

Then came the grimmest part of the whole arduous migration, the ocean crossing itself. The ordinary ship of the period had two decks; the immigrants were normally carried in the “’tween decks” between the upper and lower.  The orlop, beneath the lower deck, was ordinarily used for heavy freight, but there were times when even its musty space was utilized for immigrants.  Frequently there was less than six feet between decks, so that a tall man could not stand erect.  Seldom were there any portholes: the only ventilation came through the hatchways, which were generally fastened down in bad weather.  A few hanging lamps gave a fitful light in an atmosphere which grew every hour more foul.  Eager to make the most of the space which they had chartered, the shippers erected tiers of wooden bunks so close together that there was barely room to pass between them and that scant space was inevitably cluttered with baggage.

Food was a major source of difficulty.  The packets carried their “farmyards” with a cow for milk and with sheep, pigs, and poultry; but those were for the cabin passengers, who were fed bountifully and served by obsequious Negro stewards.  None of that was for the poor devils ‘tween decks.  Their passage money entitled them only to bread, salt meat and a few other supplies.  They not only had to bring most of their own food, but cook everything themselves.  Grates were erected on deck, but only a few might crowd around them at a time and the less aggressive might have to wait hours to get near the fire.  In stormy weather the grates were too exposed to be used at all and, as no fires were allowed below decks, it was a case of eating uncooked food or going hungry.  When adverse winds stretched out the passage beyond the usual time, the immigrant’s private stock of food would sometimes become exhausted.

The attitude of the ship’s officers was at times an added source of unpleasantness in the steerage.  They might be delightfully gracious to the cabin passengers, because the captain secured a generous share of their passage money and it paid to give the ship a popular reputation.  The courtesy that went with a $140 fare, however, was not wasted on the passengers who paid $20.  The income from the steerage all went to the owners and the emigrants would probably not be traveling again anyway.  The result was an attitude which descended from cold indifference to rough brutality, depending upon the individuals.  The mates reveled in breaking up steerage fights, generally sailing in and knocking down all in the vicinity without often trying to determine the aggressor.[78]

In spite of the above, all of our Schowalter family arrived safely in New York City 16 Sep. 1836.  They were among the 58,000 alien passengers who did so that year.[79]

The first records so far discovered of our Showalters in America are two private cash entries recorded 20 Sep. 1839 in which the two Showalter sons, Martin & Henry, each paid $100 for land in Van Wert Co., Ohio.  The purchases were made at the Lima, Ohio, Land Office and the two brothers were both recorded as residing in Crawford Co., Ohio.

Why and how our Showalters went to Crawford Co. is not known.  A study of the 1840 census does not reveal any of the fellow passengers on the Henri IV in Crawford Co. at that time.  Nor was there any one by the name of Ellenberger, Hassert, Kendig/Kindig, Schowalter/Showalter or Wiesler living there to whom our family might have been related.  And no Schowalter/Showalter paid any taxes in Crawford Co. for the years 1836-38, or owned any land.[80]

Probably our Showalters traveled up the Hudson & Mohawk Rivers and then via the Erie Canal to Lake Erie by boat and then followed the Scioto Trail (now Ohio State Highway #4) south from Sandusky to Crawford Co.  How long this journey took is not known.  The Erie Canal leg from Rome to Buffalo took Saphronia Skeels & her family six days in Sep. 1833.[81]

By the time of the 1840 census, Henry Showalter was head of the following household in Bath Twp./Town of Lima, Allen Co., Ohio (p. 125):

-         1 male 15-20  [son Henry]

-         1 male 20-30  [son Martin]

-         1 male  40-50  [Henry]

-         1 female  10-15  [daughter Anna]

-         1 female  50-60  [wife Margaret].

Note that Margaret was probably only about 47 years old and Anna about 17 years old according to the Henry IV passenger list.

As mentioned above, sons Martin & Henry initiated the purchases of land in Van Wert Co. in 1839.  Probably they did not settle there until after the 1840 census was taken, at which time they resided in neighboring Allen Co.  However, it must not have been much later since son Hein married Mary Hertz in Van Wert Co. 16 Sep. 1841 (see ¶ii. below).

In the 1850 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., father Henry Showalter, born Germany, is shown living with his son Henry.  He is listed as 29 or 39 years of age but this is no doubt an error for 59.  Margaret, his wife, does not appear in the census.

In the 1860 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., father Henry, born Bavaria, is again shown living with his son Henry but this time his age is correctly recorded as 69.  Again, Margaret does not appear.

Floyd Showalter (see ¶2.k. below) reported to Lloyd Henney that Hein & Margaret Showalter lived in Pennsylvania before moving to Van Wert Co.[82]

No death or burial records have been found for either Henry or Margaret Showalter.

The three children of Hein & Magda Schowalter were all born in Ruchheim, Canton of Mutterstadt, County of Speyer, Bayern:

i.                     MARTIN SCHOWALTER/SHOWALTER, born 25 Sep. 1818 (fig. 12),[83] married (1) ANNA AUCKER 2 July 1840 (1843?) by Elias Everson, Pleasant Twp. J.P.,[84] married (2) ELIZABETH McGARVEY 16 Oct. 1848 by Joseph Gleason, Pleasant Twp. J.P.,[85] died 2 (7?) Aug. 1859, buried Sugar Ridge Cemetery, Tully Twp.[86] (fig. 16). Martin’s tombstone has been read “D. Aug. 2, 1859 10 Yrs 10D” by Mrs. Gene Carter, 233 W. First St., Van Wert, OH 45891. Probably it originally read 40 (not 10) years.  Note that the true dates of Martin’s two marriages require further research.  Martin’s second wife, Elizabeth, subsequently married John Himmerdinger 16 Jan. 1862.

While still a resident of Crawford Co., Ohio, Martin on 20 Sep. 1839 purchased for $100 at the Lima Land Office the East half of the SE quarter of Section No. 35 in Twp. No. 1 South, Range No. 1 East, containing 80 acres at $1.25/acre (figs. 13 & 14).[87] On 2 Dec. 1839 Twp. 1 South, Range 1 East was made a township by the Van Wert Co. Commissioners and named Tully Twp.  It is the extreme NW township in Van Wert Co. (fig. 15).  Section No. 35 is near the SW corner of the township (fig. 16).  This “land entry” initiated the proceedings that, if successfully completed, would result in the issuance of a patent to Martin.[88] Such was the case and on 1 June 1845 his patent was issued (fig. 17).[89]

On 4 Oct. 1841 “Personally appeared in Open Court Martin Showalter of the age of twenty three years a native of Bavaria and makes oath & says that it is bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States and to forever renounce and abjure all fidelity & allegiance to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever and particularly to Louis Charles Joseph King of Bavaria of whom he is now a subject.”[90]

On 26 Apr. 1847: “Martin Showalter an alien a native of Bavaria and now resident of this County this day came into Court and made application to be fully naturalized and to become a citizen of the United States, and it appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Martin Showalter on the fourth day of Oct. 1841 before the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Van Wert County Ohio had taken the oath of intention to become a citizen of the United States and it appearing to the satisfaction of this court by the oaths of Henry Showalter and John R. Woodruff that the said Martin Showalter has resided in the United States five years, that he is of good moral character, that he is attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same, and the said Martin Showalter on being admitted by this Court, took the oath to support the Constitution of the United States of America and that he now doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty what so ever and particularly to Louis Charles Joseph King of Bavaria of whom he as formerly a subject.”[91]

In the 1850 census for Tully Twp., Martin Showalter was head of the following household (p. 188):

-         Martin Showalter, 37, M, born Germany

-         Elisabeth Showalter, 23, F, born Ohio

-         Desvillan Showalter, 5, M, born Ohio

-         Diana McGarvay, 4, F, born Ohio.

Was Desvillan a son by Martin’s first wife Anna, and was Diana a daughter of Martin’s second wife Elisabeth by a previous marriage?

On 17 Oct. 1851 Martin & Elisabeth Showalter sold to George Denig for $600 the E½ of the SE¼ of Section 35, Township 1 South, Range 1 East, containing 80 acres, i.e., the land Martin had purchased in 1839.[92]

Martin’s will and estate papers have not as yet been examined.  All that is known so far is that his brother Henry was appointed executor/administrator on 13 Aug. 1859.[93]

Probably Martin & Anna had a son DESVILLAN SHOWALTER, born ca. 1845.

The children of Martin & Elizabeth Showalter were:

In 1838 Mary discovered about 100 lbs. of bullets and some silver plate buried on what is now the corner of Main & Markey Sts. in Van Wert.  No doubt the cache had been buried by some of Wayne’s army on its march from Fort Adams to Fort Defiance.[106]

Like his elder brother Martin, Henry Showalter of Crawford Co., Ohio, purchased on 20 Sep. 1839 for $100 at the Lima Land Office 80 acres of land.  Henry’s tract was described as the “West half of the SE quarter of Section #35, Township #1 South, Range #1 East” (figs. 22 & 23).[107] Thus Henry’s land was immediately to the west of Martin’s land (fig. 16).  The patent in Henry’s name was issued 1 June 1845 (fig. 24).

From the May 1845 term of the Van Wert County Common Pleas Journal, vol. A, 1837-1847, p. 233:

“In the matter of Henry Showalter

 an alien

Henry Showalter an alien a native of Germany comes and makes application for final naturalization setting forth that he came into the United States under the age of sixteen years and the Court having been satisfied from the testimony of Peter Heart and Martin Showalter that the said Henry Showalter has resided within the limits of the United States and that he was under the age of sixteen years when he came in to the United States; the said Henry Showalter was therefore sworn to support the Constitution of the United States and that he did absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state and sovereignty whatever and particularly to Louis Joseph Charles King of Bavaria and was admitted a citizen of the United States.”

On 4 May 1847 Henry & Mary Elizabeth Showalter sold for $95 to Daniel Gresley 40 acres of land in Tully Twp. described as the NW¼ of the SE¼ of Section #35, Township #1S, Range #1E,[108] i.e., the north half of the land Henry had purchased in 1839 (see above).  On 28 Jan. 1850 Henry sold the remaining south half to Henry High.[109] On 15 June 1848 Henry Showalter bought from P. J. Hines, County Auditor, a parcel of land located in the NE corner of the NW¼ of the NW¼ of Section 25, Tully Twp.[110] On 20 Aug. 1897, 2 acres of this parcel of land were sold to the Trustees of Convoy Lodge #641 I.O.O.F. to become part of the I.O.O.F. Cemetery 1 mile NE of Convoy.[111] Apparently this land had passed through 12 owners between the years 1848 and 1897!

In the 6 Sep. 1850 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., Ohio, Henry Showalter was head of the following household (p. 216):

-         Martin Showalter, 4, M, born Ohio

-         Mary Showalter, 7, F, born Ohio

-         Anna Showalter, 3, F, born Ohio.

As noted above (¶1.), the second Henry Showalter in this list is Heinrich/Henry, Sr. His age should have been recorded as 59.  Note that wife Mary Elizabeth and son Henry are missing from this census report.  Also note that Henry and his family now reside in Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., which lies immediately south of Tully Twp. (fig.15).

Just when they relocated to Harrison Twp. is not known but Henry did obtain title to the N½ of the NE¼ of Section 16 of Harrison Twp. 16 Sep. 1853, land immediately north of Peter Hertz’s 80 acres purchased the same day.[112] On 8 Feb. 1859 Henry obtained a patent for this land.[113] On 22 Apr. 1870, Henry sold this same land to his son Henry, Jr., for $1,000.[114] Note the “Estate of H. Showalter” land on Showalter ditch shown in the NE¼ of Section 14 of Harrison Twp. (fig. 21).  In 1872 H. Showalter owned land in Sections 14, 15, and 16 of Harrison Twp.[115]

On 13 Aug. 1859, Henry was appointed executor/administrator of his brother Martin’s will (see ¶1.i. above).

In the 9 Aug. 1860 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., Henry Showalter was head of the following household (p. 190):

Anna E. Hertz was Mary’s widowed mother.

The consolidated enrollment list of the 5th Congressional District of Ohio included Henry Showalter, age 43, farmer, of Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., in its 1863 Civil War draft data.  However, he is listed as born in Ohio.[116]
