VETERAN FLIER, DEAD AT 83" Graveside services for Howell Cobb Barwick, JR of Orange Park, a retired airline pilot, will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. Mr. Barwick, 83, died Friday after a traffic accident. Mr. Barwick was born in Athens Ga. During WW II, he served as an Army flight commander and as a flight instructor, training pilots in Avon Park. He moved to Jacksonville after the war and became a pilot with National Airlines. During an 18-year career, he became the company's senior captain for the DC-10 aircraft, and was involved in the formation of the AirLine Pilots Association. After retiring from the airline in 1973, he piloted DC-8 aircraft on international charter flights for several years. He is survived by his wife, Emily Macduff Barwick, a son, Howell Barwick III of Orange Park; a daughter, Caroline McComb Scheppe of Jacksonville; and five grandchildren. Howell was the grandson of Stancil and Emma Blackshear Barwick. |
