He was storekeeper. He was listed in the 1871 Ontario census, age 63, born ireland, irish ethnicity, storekeeper, Canadian Presbyterian. Also listed in census is Willam Rogers, age 54, same religion, birthplace, ethnicity, living in Gananoque as a "gentleman". This is Samuel's brother. Also listed in Gan with same religion, ethnicity, merchant William Rogers, age 26, born Ontario, Samuels's son.
From the Gananoque Reporter obituary, it says his family came from the County of Monaghan in Ireland in 1822, arriving in gananoque June 11, 1822. he worked for Mr. Chas. MacDonald, who also sent him to school for several terms. He managed business of messrs. C. and J. MacDonald, and later Mr. W.S. MacDonald. After he was married, he lived in the same house on the north side of King St., east of Stone St. for the rest of his life. In 1858 he severed his connection with the MacDonalds and went into the grocery and provisions business with a store beside his house. At the time of his death the store was still run by sons Lewis and Charles. He was a memebr of the Presbyterian church.3
Agnes Nelson From Falkirk Scotland (near Glasgow), came to Gan in 1832 with her family. Her father worked a farm east of town. In her obituary, it is reported that she had one oddity - she never kept a servant.4 She was born on 15 May 1815 at Falkirk. Scotland. She died on 17 Dec 1890 at Ganaoque, Leed Co, Ontario, at age 75. She was buried in Dec 1890 at Gananoque.

He Came to Gananoque with his family from Co. Monaghan Ireland in 1822. As a young man he left town but returned. When he returned (between 1840-1850), his father and mother had taken a farm 4 miles east of the town. He opened a grocery store with his brother William Rogers. In 1854 he removed to a farm east of town. (The farm is shown on a 1861 map of Landsdowne Township, and is only a few miles east of town, 1/2 mile east of McCrones Corners). He sang in the Methodist Church in Wilstead.7
Isabella Smart5 Isabella Smart was a native of Scotland. She came with her father to Brockville, ON in 1831. Isabella came to work for Mrs. Andrew Purvis in Gananoque where she met Holmes. She and Holmes were in gananoque until 1854 when they removed to their farm in Landsdowne Twp.7 She was born in 1827 at SCT.5 She died on 14 Nov 1901 at Gananoque, Leeds, Ont.5
