The information below came from a posting on geneforum: By Brenda Rigsby, Thanks Brenda.

This is from a newspaper column, and I have transcribed the words exactly. It was printed in standard newspaper format with regular indentations between paragraphs, but for some reason the computer wouldn't take those, so I've double-spaced instead to indicate new paragraphs.

I have no further information about this column but thought the information in it was quite interesting.

This “Know Your Name" column by John Dowling appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the early 1980s

"Rigby

"The English name Rigby is a location surname found in Lancashire where its first spelling was Rigbi in the 1086 Domesday Book. The meaning is from an Old Norse word hryyg-r- (a ridge), thus “farm on a ridge.” The suffix
by-r denotes this farm is under the control of a major homestead.

"William de (of) Riggby was on the 1379 Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls in 1379. William Simon and Martha Riggesby were issued a marriage license in London in 1623, and John Rigby and Margery Deacon were issued the same license in 1627.

"Burke’s General Armory describes the arms for six of the spelling Rigby and the one Rigbye – each different.

"In Virginia, Robert Rigby was a headright in a 1638 James City County land grant. Peter Rigby obtained two grants in Gloucester County totaling 550 acres, he obtained an 186-acre grant in Lancaster County and as Mr. Peter Rigby he shared a 600-acre grant in the same county during 1638-56.

"In North Carolina, Spencer Rigby was a property taxpayer in Perquimans County in 1772, and John Rigbee was a property taxpayer in Randolph County in 1779.

"The above spellings should not be confused with the spelling Rig(g)sby the name of a parish in Lincolnshire although both have the same meaning.

"The 1790 U.S. Census lists families of the spelling Rigby in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia."

The House of Rigsby 1066 - 2000 a.d.
After years of research I have become convinced that most individuals with the surname Rigsby share a common origin. In the year of our Lord 1066, Albric came to England as part of the Norman invasion. He and his son, Herbert (a-bear), were given several manors in Lincolnshire to hold for Thomas, the Archbishop of York around the year 1068. They chose the Danish manor of Rigsby as their seat of honor (primary home) and early documents show Herbert being mentioned as Hebert of Rigsby. Descendants of Herbert began to use the name Rigsby as a surname even if they did not live on the manor. This family is mentioned in many early English documents including the Doomsday Book.

RIGSBY MANOR
Located in Lincolnshire, England. The manor is located on a ridge that overlooks the North Sea some 10 miles away. The closest villiage is Alford, England. The city of Lincoln is located thirty miles to the west. What RIGSBY means.......
Rigsby - a Danish term that means dwelling on a hill/ridge.
_______________________ _______________________ Where are we today?
As of 1998 there were just over 2,800 Rigsby households in world.
The United States had the most households with 2,734. There approxamantly 8,422 individuals in the United States with the Rigsby surname. The most populous state is Tennessee with 390 individuals. The second most populous state is Texas with 306 individuals.
First in America??

Thomas Rigsby is listed as arriving at Buck/Brick Row, Virginia in 1623. Other early names in Virgina are, Peter, Robert, and Roger. If you have an earlier reference let me know. Rigsby/Rigby

What about all of the varients of the surname Rigsby? In most cases a surname that retains the "s" is a true varient of Rigsby. Examples would include Riggsby, Rigsbi, Rygsby, etc. Surnames that leave out the "s" may or may not share a common ancestory. Rigby - The majority of those with the surname Rigby come from Lancashire, England. The earlist record I found of this surname occurs in the mid-1300s. Some have suggested that Rigby may be a cadet branch of the older Rigsby line. I have not discovered any information that would confirm or deny this theory.

It must be remembered that many individuals could not read or write until this century. It was up to local officials to decide how to spell the surname. Therefore, any varient may be genetically link to the Rigsby family tree.

Rigsby was a manor given to Albric in 1067 by Thomas,Archbishop of York. Herbert, his son, is the first recorded as using the "surname"Herbert de Ryggsbi. This family owned the manor until the 1400s when it was given as a dowery. Olive Riggsby married a Tothby.By this time family members had been using the surname even if they were not "from" Rigsby manor. The word Rigsby itself is Danish - Dwelling on a ridge. Today it is a parish. There is St. James of Rigsby and Rigsby House owned by a Mr. Reed. It is a couple of kilometers outside of Alford,Lincolnshire, England. All of the evidence I have found points to this common origin for all Rigsby. The exception is where the name has been changed from Rigby. The Rigbys are from Lancashire and although there is no evidence they may be a cadet branch of the old Rigsby line.
Tell me what you know about your own family history.
I hope this helps....look forward to hearing from you,
