My family had strong links to India.  I'm the 7th generation to live and work there, and my daughter is the 8th generation to visit India. My 4th great-grandparents (the 1st generation) Thomas PRITCHARD and Catherine (née DOYLE) arrived in Madras in 1808. I was born in India in 1934, and left in 1946 for school in England. I've visited India several times, and worked there five times in 1999-2001.

My father (the 6th generation) and mother were both born in India and lived most of their lives there until 1947. My father's parents were born in India, as were his three known grandparents. My maternal grandfather, though born in England, worked in the Indian Civil Service (ICS); his wife, my grandmother, was born in India, and so were her father and grandfather.

There are common themes my ancestors' careers. On my father's side (DUNCAN), the men came to India in the early 1800s from Scotland and Ireland to serve in the Honorable East India Company (HEIC) Army or Government. They generally rose through the ranks to become Warrant Officers, and some to Honorary Captains. Many of their offspring worked in government service, or for the Bengal Nagpur Railway.

My maternal grandfather (BRACKEN) was born in England, but served in the ICS (Madras Government) from 1903 to 1938. On my maternal grandmother's side ( FARRINGTON) they were mostly military people, some enlisting in the HEIC Army as officers, and some in Her Majesty's Army. My 2nd great-grandfather, General John James FARRINGTON, married Jane MacLEOD, 1st cousin of Flora MURE-CAMPBELL, Countess of Loudoun, who married Francis RAWDON-HASTINGS, Marquess of Hastings, Governor General of India.
