James Alexander Bradley James Alexander Bradley was born in 1768, possibly New Munster, Cecil County, Maryland and died 18 September 1839 in Mecklenburg county, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Houston, the daughter of George Houston and Margaret Weir on 30 August 1810. She was born in 1776 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died 19 August 1817, possibly in childbirth. Very little is known about James Bradley. He seems to have been a very private person. As a matter of fact, the only “proof” of his connection to us is an old family tree of the family of James Alexander (his grandfather) that is believed to have been drawn sometime in the late 1800s. The tree is now in the possession of the North Carolina State Archives. James may have remarried after Elizabeth’s death. On the 1850 census of Mecklenburg County, there is a 67 year old woman by the name of Jane Bradley living in the household of Elam Henderson and his wife Abigail Bradley. Abigail was James Bradley’s oldest child so the assumption is that this Jane Bradley may have been her stepmother. Children of James A. Bradley and Elizabeth Houston: 1. Abigail Smith Bradley was born in 1812 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She married John Elam Henderson on 03 Dec 1834. He was the son of John Lee Henderson and Ann Sample and the older brother of our ancestor, Amanda Ann Henderson. He was born on 09 Nov 1810 in Mecklenburg, North Carolina and died on 04 Apr 1879 in Perry Co., Alabama. Abigail and Elam raised eight children: Abigail, James McKnitt, Hugh Cunningham, Margaret, Rebecca, Alice, Laura and John. 2. Margaret Weir Bradley was born in 1813 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She died sometime after 1880 in Texas. She married Henry James Simons on 23 Feb 1842 in Yorkville, Gibson Co, Tennessee. She is the subject of the next generation. 3. Abram Bradley was born in 1817. It is believed that he lived at least into his teen years but nothing further is known about him. |
