Mary Lynch Coachman

Mary Lynch Coachman was born 08 Oct 1792 in Georgetown, Georgetown County, South Carolina.  She married John Joseph Simons 07 May 1812 at Rock Point, Georgetown District, South Carolina.  He was the son of Shadrach Simons and Elizabeth Britton.  She was named for one of her Great-grandmothers on her maternal side, Mary Lynch, a member of the Lynch family that is discussed in another section of this history.

Mary Lynch Coachman followed her husband, John Joseph Simons as he moved about the southern states in search of greener pastures.  That he loved, even worshiped his wife, is evident in what he had to say about her in his history.

"At this man's house, that is Francis Greece, there often was much company of the first families in the state of South Carolina.  Amongst this company of noble visitors was a young lady, a daughter of Captain Joseph Coachman, this young lady was a lady of the highest standing in the State.  Her name was Mary Lynch.  I must here confess on first sight I fell in love and my love was a pure as the unclouded noon day's.  Though timid and backward I addressed her sometime in the first of the year 1812 and on the 7 day of May we were married. . . ."

It is not known when or where Mary Lynch Coachman Simons died.  It can be assumed that she was still living in 1857 as John Joseph mentions consulting her in writing his history.  However, neither she nor John Joseph can be found on the 1860 census.  It is assumed, therefore, that they both passed away between those dates.
