Shelby Phillip

Shelby Phillip was born about 1650, and died 26 June 1731 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales.  His wife was Margaretta whom he married in 1673 in Tregaron.   Much of what we know of him is from the Church Records of St. Caron’s Church (Church of England).  These records show that his name was written as Selby until the year 1709 when the records begin consistently using the name Shelby. He was named using the old Welsh system of patronymics by which a child took his father's first name as his last name. So, although his name was Shelby Phillip, his son was Evan Shelby.  Shelby Phillip's father probably had Phillip as his first name together with a completely different last name which makes tracing the line further back virtually impossible.

Shelby Phillip was buried on 26 June 1731 in the churchyard at St. Caron’s Church in Tregaron.  All we have is an entry in the burial register.  Unfortunately the graveyard filled up early in the 19th century and all the pre 1800 gravestones were removed.  So it is not known where in the churchyard the grave is located.

He was a man of some substance and is referred to in the records as a yeoman.  Yeoman represented a freeholder under the rank of gentleman and hence vaguely a commoner or countryman of respectable standing, especially one who cultivates his own land.  Shelby Phillip owned a farm near Tregaron called Derlyn.  It still exists with that name today although it passed out of the Shelby family several generations ago.  It is up on a hill looking down on the Croes and Berwyn rivers.

Children of Shelby Phillip and Margaretta were:

1.  Maria Shelby, born Feb 1682 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales.

2.  Ellinora Shelby, born Feb 1683 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales.

3.  Evan Shelby, born Mar 1690 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales; died 1751 Frederick, Maryland.  Evan is the subject of our next generation.

4.  Rees Shelby, born Feb 1693 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales.  There is some speculation that he may have come to the colonies with his brother, Evan.

5.  Elizabetha Shelby, born Dec 1696 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales.

6.  Rowland Shelby died 1736.
