LEGG'S TRIAL
The Accused Sentenced to Prison for Life
Startling Incidents Occurring Twelve Years Ago Recalled by the Trial

     On Friday morning last the circuit court heard the case of the
state against John Legg,who was charged with the murder of John
Bedingfield in the Rogersville beat, twelve years ago. The facts
connected with the murder are familiar to the readers of The Times.
It will be remembered that Legg killed John Bedingfield and his son
Jerome on the 23rd day of January, 1900, made his escape, and was
captured recently in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas.
     The trial last week was for the murder of John Bedingfield. The
case for the murder of the son may never come up, as the sentence in
the first case involves a life sentence.
      In this case the state was represented by Solicitor Simpson and
Messrs. Mitchell & Hughston, and the prisoner by Messrs. Paul Hodges
and A. A. Williams. The plea of the prisoner was, "Not guilty, by reason
of insanity." Quite a large number of witnesses were examined,and the
State's case proven, as in accordance with the facts already recently
set forth in The Times. Some of the witnesses testified substantially
that the accused, when under great emotion, appeared to lose all control
of himself and acted in a maniacal manner.
     The trial closed about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and after an
absence of about two hours the jury returned with the verdict of murder
in the first degree and life imprisonment. The prisoner seemed to be but
little affected by the verdict, but if any sign was manifested it was of
relief,as beyond doubt he had apprehensions of a verdict involving death.
     Among the crowd attending the trial were three sons of the murdered
man,and a brother of the prisoner, Mr. William E. Legg,of Limestone
County,a man who is held in the highest esteem by his neighbors as a
most worthy citizen.His loyalty to his brother in distress was the
subject of much comment by those who kept in close touch with the case.
     The jury in this famous case were Messrs. Wheeler Belew, Chas. D.
Devaney, W. W. Pettus, Houston Young, John E. Toliver, Geo. E.
McMullins, John W. Hipp, Leon Darby, W. E. Briggs, R. S. Cobb, Jas. D.
Stewart, and Wm. Jas Bardley.

Next article:  Among the visitors to Florence Saturday and Sunday were
Messrs. Charles W.(Wheeler)and Poindexter Beddingfield, brothers, and
their cousin, Henry Beddingfield. Charles Beddingfield is the son of the
late John Beddingfield, who sat on his wagon over twelve years ago, aged
at that time fourteen years, and saw his father shot down.

Legg Begins Life Term for Murder

     John Legg,40 years old,a white man, began serving a life sentence
in the state penitentiary for murder,last night,after escaping the law
for 12 years, during which period he resided in the Ozark mountains of
Arkansas and was regarded as an upright and law abiding citizen. He
slew old man Bedingfield and his son in Lauderdale county,
Alabama,escaping immediately after the act. He was located in Arkansas
in June and tried at FLorence last week. He has a wife and four children
residing at Elkmont, Limestone county.  [end of series]

cemetery at Hortense, Texas where there are about 30 Parrishes buried
