Descendants of Electa Mercy Allen and Susan Van Marter, Daughters of Enoch Benedict of Groton, New York

By John H. Allen, M.D., 11 S. 19th St., Montevideo MN 56265. Taken from his forthcoming book, The Treasure about the family of James Henry Allen.

Introduction
The descendants of the daughters of Enoch Benedict6 (Gilbert,5 Nathaniel,4 Nathaniel,3 Samuel,2 Thomas1) of Groton, [Tompkins County, New York] are not carried forward in The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. 1. (hereinafter B of A, Vol. 1) Mercy Benedict (aka. Electa Mercy Benedict or Electa Benedict) born 7 March 1802, the daughter of Enoch Benedict and Mary Veeder of Groton, New York, married on 2 February 1831 Elisha Allen of Fabius, [Onondaga County, New York]. Her sister, Susan Benedict, born 14 September 1817, married Amos Van Marter [given as Van Marten in the genealogy] of Blooming Valley, Pennsylvania. This article provides descendant information about Mercy and Susan's families. A third sister, Eve Benedict married Shubael Cross about whom nothing further is known. Although family tradition in the the author's branch of the Allen family held that James Henry Allen was an only child, according to The Family Book or Genealogy of the Descendents [sic] of Enoch Benedict by Claud Benedict, there were three other children were born to Elisha and Mercy (Benedict) Allen: George, Burdett, and Mary.

James Henry Allen was born 29 November 1831. He died 23 November 1888 in Campbell County, South Dakota. In the cemetery at Mound City, South Dakota stood his badly weathered gravestone (since replaced) with his full name inscribed and the dates of his birth and death. In the records of his granddaughter Lillian Allen we found a gravestone rubbing. The text, hard to decipher, reads:

ASLEEP IN JESUS

BLESSED SLEEP

WHICH NONE CUP

MAKES TO WEEP

Further study of James Allen is fascinating. The records of Lillian Allen state that he came from Brant, Cattaraugus County (now in Erie County), New York. We find his name in the 1850 Federal census of Crawford County, Pennsylvania where he was listed as a butcher. In 1854 he married Lucia Elila Robbins, the daughter of John Edwin Robbins Jr. and Electa Warner. In the 1860 census his mother Mercy was listed with the family. In each federal census, New York birth places were assigned for John and Lucia Allen.

In the census of 1880 James Allen was called a farmer, aged 48. With him was his wife Lucia, aged 45 and seven children: Mary 21, John 19, Albert 17, Harry 12, Frank 11, Rolland 4, and Anna 1. Presumably his mother had died by then. Court records show that in 1882 James purchased two parcels of land in Crawford County. It seems reasonable to infer that his holdings would not be sufficient to provide employment for James and his five sons.

Exodus and a New Beginning

In 1885 the Dakota Territory opened to homesteaders. With the exception of son John Allen, the whole family moved to what is now Campbell County, South Dakota. Cousins Frank and Ira Hatch had discovered the area when they returned from the gold fields of Colorado. Mound City was 100 miles from the end of the railroad at Aberdeen. South Dakota and the early years were well described by daughter Anna Luella (Allen) Loy.

The family settled on a claim southwest of Mound City, South Dakota. James Henry Allen, recognized as a man of wisdom and learning, was appointed justice of the peace and many trials were held in their home. Neighbors included family members Charles and Martha Naomi (Robbins) Stuart, Ed Robbins, and Myron and Mary Electa (Allen) Kimmy. Life was difficult, but the family persisted.

Anna Allen, only six years old when the family moved to Dakota, had vivid memories of those first years. She wrote, "In early November a terrible storm came up, and we had to stay two days and a night with Ira Hatch who lived across the road from the school. As soon as the storm cleared Father came after us and carried us over a mile to our home. To this day a blind makes me so nervous that I walk the floor. Later that winter was the famous blizzard of January 12 and 13. We had to open the windows and shovel the snow inside into tubs and onto the floor till father could crawl out and shovel the door clear. The barn was all covered and we had to carry feed and water to the three cows and a horse until March. We had to shovel down to hay stacks and to the log pile which we cut for fuel. As soon as we shoveled out the barn, it would drift in again".

Anna continued her tale. "I remember in the old days, Father had to go to the county seat to file some papers. He had to go on horseback. Since the county seat was at LaGrace, he came home along the Missouri River Road to the Skinner Ranch where brother Albert [Rueben Albert Allen] worked. He gave Albert an antelope. They were quite easy to catch because of the deep snow. Two men on horseback would drive them into a ravine where they would get stuck, and the men would cut the throats of as many as they needed. On that occasion Father fastened one on to his saddle and started the 12 mile trip home. The snow was deep and darkness overtook him. Wolves followed him very closely and he killed one or two with a revolver. By the time he approached home they were close enough to count. He got Mother to bring the lantern and they put the horse into the barn. That night the wolves continued to circle the house and run over the roof until Mother was near frantic. Father never went out after dark again during that winter as the wolves were starving. They even ate the rabbits we caught in traps"

In 1888 tragedy struck. While his wife Lucia visited in Pennsylvania, James Henry Allen became acutely ill with influenza and died after only a three day illness. This was such a shock that Lucia took her three youngest children, Frank, Rolland and Anna, back to Pennsylvania where the family farm remained. They stayed for several years. Lucia then sold her property and moved back to South Dakota where the family stayed until 1901.

In that year (1901) Lucia (Robbins) Allen, daughter Mary with husband Myron Samuel Kimmy, and sons Frank and Rolland moved to Alberta, Canada. The men went first and staked out claims then went back to pack up their personal possessions. They all made the move by train. Frank married in Alberta, but by 1906 the health of his wife Mabel Clair (Hayner) necessitated a move to Oregon. Lucia moved with them and lived with Frank and Mabel until her death in 1910 at age 76. Although during the last few years of her life Lucia was very confused, according to granddaughter Clara (Allen) Speerstra, Lucia was a very loving and devout woman. She demonstrated courage and perseverance in spite of much tragedy and hardship.

3. Unsigned family group sheets, found in the Harry Allen family home in Mound City, South Dakota for Elisha Allen and Mercy Benedict (aka. Electa Mercy Benedict or Electa Benedict) include one son, James Henry Allen. These were done in the same handwriting as one for James Allen and Lucia Robbins, with latest recorded date of 1941. These were almost certainly prepared by Clarence Allen, Lillian Allen and Estelle Allen who resided there at that time. These siblings were grandchildren of James Henry Allen and Lucia Robbins. The handwriting is quite masculine.

4. The 1860 federal census of Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania lists Mercy Allen age 58 as part of the family of James Henry Allen, her birth place New York.

5. The same family group sheets have written on the back: "A sister of Electa Benedict, Susan Benedict married Amos Van Martar. Pages 262- 263 Volume I of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America (1870), reprinted and annotated by Elwin Benedict (1969), states that Susan Benedict, daughter of Enoch Benedict6 (Gilbert,5 Nathaniel,4 Nathaniel,3 Samuel,2 Thomas,1) who was born Sept. 4, 1817, married Oct. 13, 1840, Amos Van Marten [sic], Blooming Valley, Pa. The plat book of that area shows them living on property adjacent to James and Mercy Allen.

6. Photograph from Grace (Allen) Burke, daughter of Frank Allen and granddaughter of James Henry Allen, now in possession of the author, found among old family pictures in the Harry Allen home in Mound City, South Dakota. Written on the back (no signature) is "Susan Van Marter - Mother of Rueben Van Marter - Cousin of James Allen." The woman in the carte de vista is dressed in 19th century clothing. There is a stamp from a photographer in [?Edinboro], Erie Co., Pa. The photograph has been damaged in a fire.

7. Among the children of Susan Benedict and Amos Van Marter, supplied on a list to the author by Marjorie (VanMarter) Norton of Horton, Saegertown, Pa., is listed Rueben Van Marter, who would have been a cousin of James Henry Allen.

8. A son of James Henry Allen, Rolland Benedict Allen, was included on the family group sheet for the family of James Henry Allen and Lucia Elila Robbins. These were made up by Marian (Loy) Snorteland, a daughter of Anna (Allen) Loy and a granddaughter of James Henry Allen. Many handwritten and unsigned family lists from various families are consistent with the above.

9. A granddaughter of James Henry Allen, listed on the family group sheet for Elisha John Allen was named Adah Benedict Allen. This information was supplied by Emma Snedeker Greenwood, a daughter of Adah.

Pension Files at the National Archives

Contributed by John E. Benedict, 4919 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington DC 20016-4310

Among the jewels of the National Archives’ collection are the pension applications of some 80,000 Revolutionary War servicemen. Beyond their obvious historical interest, they are a great storehouse of genealogical information.

The earliest pensions for Revolutionary War soldiers were issued by states and limited largely to invalids, widows, and orphans. Congress did authorize some pensions for servicemen disabled in service and for many officers and their dependents. Those early measures, however, affected relatively few people, and records survival and the scope of documentation vary.1 It wasn’t until several decades later, when the nation’s surviving patriots were in their twilight years, that Congress adopted broad-based pension legislation for all Revolutionary veterans.2

Under the Pension Act of 1818, Congress authorized annual pensions to any surviving veteran living in "reduced circumstances." Applicants had to establish the fact and duration of their service, describe their family and financial situations, and prove their need for financial assistance. In 1820, reacting to perceived abuses among applicants, Congress required all recipients and applicants to catalog their assets in detail.

In 1832, Congress approved pensions for all surviving veterans, regardless of need. Six years later, it approved the first of several comprehensive pensions for the widows of veterans. Again, all applicants were obliged to prove the serviceman’s service with convincing evidence, provide a history of the serviceman’s life and residence, and information on his marriage or remarriage.

Applications under the Acts of 1818 and 1832 together comprise Record Group 15 of the Records of the Veterans Administration. They are arranged alphabetically on National Archives microfilm numbers M804 (complete files, totaling nearly 3,000 reels) or M805 (nearly 1,000 reels, containing all files but selected records only). Recently, these records were painstakingly abstracted in three volumes by Virgil White, Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files (Nat. Hist. Pub. Co. 1990).

Record Group 15 does not begin to cover every Revolutionary War soldier. Many veterans and their widows didn’t live long enough to qualify. Others didn’t apply, either due to religious views, the difficulty of proving service, ignorance of the pension program, or a lack of need for the money. However, by any measure, it is a large collection. If you suspect Revolutionary War service, and that either the serviceman or his widow survived past 1830, then you ought to check this collection. It contains detailed information available nowhere else.3

Outlined on the next page are entries from Records Group 15 for the surname Benedict -- limited to that spelling. Each entry lists the soldier’s given name, the state from which he originally served, and his place of residence at the time the application was submitted. For widow’s applications, the widow’s given name is also listed. For more information, consult the microfilm or White’s abstracts. Both are available at larger libraries and can be borrowed by inter-library loan through most county libraries.

For a copy of the National Archives file, contact the General Reference Office, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), 7th and Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC 20408. Request a NATF Form 80. Fill out and return the form, and the Archives staff will send you copies from the microfilm file for a very modest fee (currently $10). Allow up to ten weeks for delivery. A faster way to request the form is to telephone (202) 501-5400. Ask for the General Reference Office.

Also included on the following pages is a similar index to the pension files in the National Archives for the War of 1812-14 for persons surnamed Benedict. The procedure for ordering records is the same.

Notes:

1. Don’t discount the value of a search for these early records. Although most federal records were lost to two fires in 1800, there are still many resources available. The Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications in the National Archives Rev. edition (1976: National Genealogical Soc., Arlington, Va.) covers all federal files from 1800 onward, albeit in abbreviated format. Murtie Clark’s The Pension Lists of 1792-1795, With Other Revolutionary Pension Records (1985: Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore) includes many early federal files not previously published. And there are many state pension guides available. An example, although not limited to state pension records, is Bobby Moss, Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution (1983: Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore).

2. Some early applicants received bounty land warrants in lieu of annual pensions.

3. For more information on the Pension Acts, and for transcriptions of many of the most interesting and detailed pension accounts, read John Dann’s The Revolution Remembered: Eyewitness Accounts of the War for Independence (1982: University of Chicago).

Notes from Elwyn E. Benedict, Family Genealogist

Benedict Manufacturing Company

"I noted Chris and Mignon Benedict's letter about the 'Benedict Silverplate' [Fall, Vol. 4, No. 2] and Francis Crook's query about the same thing [Summer, Vol. 4, No. 1]. According to the attached leaflet [xeroxed pages, clippings from a book or paper dated 1979], the Benedict Manufacturing Company was founded in 1863 by M.F. Benedict and was a leading industry in East Syracuse until just after the war years in 1945 - manufacturing silver plated ware. The M.S. Benedict Silver Company building was located (at West Manlius St. and Highland Ave). The factory employed 250 workers through the depressions years, sometimes only for two or three days a week. Benedict's most famous line, Indestructo, was a complete line of silverware designed specifically for hospitals, restaurants, soda fountains, hotels, clubs, and institutions.]

"The company is described in The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. II, page 316: Harlow Benedict6 (Elihu,5 Thaddeus,5 Thomas,3 James,2 Thomas1). His son Mainor Stuart Benedict and grandson Harry Lloyd Benedict where involved.

Norfolk vs. Nottingham Origins

"Enclosed is a copy of John I. Coddington's letter to me April 14, 1965 and my letter to him March 1, 1968. He never sent any further information. I got what I put in Volume II G of BA from the Syracuse Library. [In Mr. Coddington's letter, he refers to his "Note on Bridgham and Thomas Benedict of Norwalk, Conn." in The American Genealogist, Vol. 33 (1957), pp. 120-121. John Coddington, a prominent and well-respected genealogist, wrote that he was a Benedict descendant certainly through three lines - possibly five. He was willing to send Elwyn his Benedict material on the ancestors of Thomas Benedict if it would be used according to the way it was arranged and if credit would be given in the book.]

Material from Old Benedict Reunions

"Enclosed is a copy of the letter William C. Benedict of Blossburg, Pennsylvania sent me when he finally agreed to let Esther and I have all the data his father and his family and himself had gathered at national reunions of the Benedicts in Grove Park near Elmira, New York. See pages 213-215, Vol. II G of BA, page 543: Henry Jay Benedict8 [(Samuel,7 Matthew,6 James,5 Caleb,4 John,3 John,2 Thomas1) and his sons Samuel Shakespeare Benedict9 and William Custer Benedict were secretaries of the Benedict reunion for years. The letter, dated 5 October 1960, indicates that the material was gathered a generation earlier. The material covered much of the period missing between the 1870 Volume I, G of BA and would "amass some connecting links".]

"This data gathered, was in three large cardboard boxes and was invaluable because it tied into Volume II much of the data I had collected. It spanned 1890 to 1930.

Henry Stanley Benedict (1878-1930)

Contributed by Sheila Benedict. From California Biographical Dictionary, Second Edition (Somerset, New York: 1994), p. 22.

Henry Stanley Benedict (1878-1930) was a U.S. Representative from California, born in Boonsville, Missouri, and moved with his parents in 1888 to Los Angeles where he attended grammar and high school. After studying at the University of South California College of Law, he was admitted to the bar in 1910 and began practicing law in Los Angeles. He was a member of the state house of representatives from 1910 until 1914, when he was elected to the state senate. Two years later, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William D. Stephens. Though he was nominated for the Sixty-fifth Congress by the Progressive Party, he withdrew his name on behalf of the Republican nominee. After leaving office in 1917, he continued to practice law while also engaging in banking. He was a member of the state department of finance of California from 1919 until 1921, when he was named to the California State Railroad Commission. In 1923, he left the commission and once again returned to practicing law in Los Angeles. He died while on a visit in London, England.

[Henry Stanley Benedict is mentioned briefly as the only child of Francis Marion8 Benedict, (Herman Betts7, Isaac 6, Abraham5, John4, Thomas1) p. 177 in Vol. II of The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America (1969). His mother was Julia Lamyra William. One child is listed for him, Margaret Winefred Benedict, born 29 July 1901.]

St. John and Hoyt Update

By Roberta Pierson, 8330 Allene Creek Court, Citus Heights CA 95610. (Roberta is our queries editor.)

New research on the St. John [a.k.a. Sension or Sention] and Hoyt [a.k.a. Hoit, Hayt, Hayte, or Haight] families who both intermarried with the Benedicts has been found. The answer to who "Brother & Sister Hoyt" were, in the will of Mathias St. John, was published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register in October 1995.1 This article indicates that "Walter Hoyt’s third wife was probably Rhoda (Tinker) sister of Mary Tinker wife of Mathias St. John."

Mary and Rhoda’s parents are believed to be Robert and Mary (Merwin) Tinker. Mary Merwin was the second wife of Robert Tinker and married for her second husband, Humphrey Collins who died in England. She came to New England as the "Widow Collins". (See reference 2 for Mary Merwin’s lineage.)

Children of Robert and Mary Tinker baptized at New Windsor, County Berks, England:

  • i. Sarah baptized 22 November 1601, buried 1 May 1617 at New Windsor

ii. Helen/Ellen born ca. 1604 married 13 August 1628 William Hubbard - New Windsor

iii. Mary baptized 6 August 1606 married Matthias Sension 1 November 1627 - New

    Windsor

iv. Robert baptized 20 February 1608/9 as "son of Robert Tynker," buried at New Windsor 12 February 1625/6

    v. Rhoda baptized 16 July 1611 as "daughter of Robert Tinker" married 1 Nov 1631 Thomas

    Hobbs - New Windsor.

  • Rhoda was named in the 1623 will of her father Robert Tinker. In 1633 Thomas Hobbs witnessed the will of Humphrey Collins, stepfather of Rhoda. Rhoda married second John Taylor who about 1646 died at sea. She married third, Walter Hoyt. (See reference 1 for further information on the Tinker line.)

The Spring 1995 and Spring 1996 Hoyt Issue3 has received new research on Simon Hoyt by Robin Bush, an English researcher hired by Roy Olson, its editor.

Mr. Bush found Hoyt baptismals in West Hatch near Taunton, Somerset, England. Walter Hoyt was babtized 29 November 1618 and Nicholas Hoyt was baptized 7 May 1620. This indicates that Simon the immigrant was from Somerset, England. Also found was a marriage 4 November 1617 for Simon Hoyt to Jane Stoodlie at Marshwood, Dorset, England. This fits for the age of Walter Hoyt, Simon’s first child. It was previously believed that Simon Hoyt, from Upwey, Dorset, England had married Deborah Stowers.4 Mr. Bush checked the Upwey Parish Registers and found the registers survive only from 1654. He found the Bishop’s transcripts for the Parish only from 1731. The Dorchester Parish (Holy Trinity) survives from 1559, All Saints & St. Peter’s Parish records are from 1653. None of these have bishop’s transcripts before 1730/1. None of these parish records have any trace of Simon Hoyt or baptisms of his children. Mr. Olson hopes to continue further research in England.

    Query

    BENEDICT/ LANKSTER/ MOONEY

The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, Vol. II, p. 473, says that Peter BENEDICT married Mary Elizabeth LANKSTER in 1760, Lebanon, PA. That book suggests that one of their sons, John is the Johannes (1781-1859, p. 474) who married Sarah MOONEY (1790-1867), in Lancaster PA in 1807. Does anyone have other information about Peter BENEDICT & Mary Elizabeth LANKSTER & their children, especially Johannes BENEDICT? I have much information on the descendants of Johannes BENEDICT & Sarah MOONEY & am interested in corresponding with other descendants.

    Berrien County, Michigan Marriage Certificates

In our last issue (Vol. IV, No. 2, Fall 1996) we transcribed early marriage records from Berrien County, Michigan. Since that time, it has come to our attention that the Berrien County Historical Association, P.O. Box 261, Berrien Springs MI 49013, will send photocopies of the original certificates that they have indexed. Copies are $3 each, postpaid. Not all of the records we transcribed are included in their index and there are some differences in the names of those that do appear. Please realize that these are the original certificates. Those on the microfilm and in the county clerk's office were transcribed from these certificates into the record books and errors may have occurred at that level. We have placed in brackets, the name that we transcribed from the film (if different than last issue). Order certificates with names, dates, and certificate numbers below if possible.
