Testing DNA for Genealogy

At this writing, there is an increasing number of laboratories throughout the world that are licensed to perform the many steps required to analyze and evaluate DNA. These tests are performed for a variety of purposes, perhaps the greatest volume of testing being for forensic and paternity determinations. Of these many laboratories, though, only a handful specialize in testing for the field of genetic genealogy, often in association with University genetic research groups. This allows potential clients a free market of labs from which to select, with laboratories adopting their own particular sets of markers, as well as a range of the number of markers to test.

The Benedict Surname DNA Project welcomes new members to select from, or to submit data already obtained from, any of the reputable testing laboratories. However, for the sake of obtaining consistently high quality results, we at the Project have selected Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas, to be our "official" laboratory for new testing.

About Family Tree DNA

The following statement is quoted from FTDNA's homepage:

"There is a reason why 9 out of 10 genealogists choose Family Tree DNA.

"Since its inception, in April of 2000, Family Tree DNA has been associated with the Arizona Research Labs [at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona], led by Dr. Michael Hammer, one of the world's leading authorities in the field of Genetics. Having other renowned scientists [on] its advisory board, Family Tree DNA is the world leader and only organization in the field of Genetic Genealogy that has been constantly developing the science that enables many genealogists around the world to advance their families' research."

Our Recommendation

FTDNA provides a wide range of tests for both Y-DNA (patrilineal) data and for mtDNA (matrilineal) data. For the purposes of the Benedict Surname DNA Project, we are recommending that applicants select, as a minimum DNA testing level, the Y-DNA25 test (rather than the Y-DNA12 test), or preferably, the Y-DNA37 test or higher. The greater the number of markers tested for, the more definitive and greater the precision of results. FTDNA provides a free DNA test kit.
