Descendants of Jesse Bennett

Generation No. 1

1. JESSE3 BENNETT (ISAAC2, ?1) was born Abt. 1781, and died February 1813 in Vaughan twp., York Co., Ontario. He married ANNA CATHERINE COBER September 09, 1800 in St. James Cathedral, Toronto., daughter of PETER COBER and ANNA STROEHER. She was born February 08, 1781 in Brothersvalley, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, and died July 1869.

It is unknown where Jesse was born, but possibly Virginia somewhere between 1777 and 1781. He lived with his parents & siblings in Brothersvalley, Somerset County, Pennsylvania until his migration to Ontario.

Many Pennsylvania Germans migrated to Upper Canada for free land and in some cases to avoid the various wars & unrest the United States was experiencing in the late 1700’s & early 1800’s. These gentle folk were known as Amish/Mennonite & Dunkards/Tunker/Bretheren in Christ. Their religious beliefs forbid them to swear an oath of allegiance. There is no indication that Jesse was involved with the Dunkards, however his wife Catherine was the sister of John Nicholas & Peter Cober, two well-known Dunkard Ministers.

He appears to have accompanied John Nicholas Cober, John's three sisters, Anna Catherine, Mary & Susannah along with others migrating north in the year 1796.

On September 9, 1800, Jesse married Anna Catherine Cober at St. James Cathedral, in Toronto. The couple have the honor of being the very first couple married in this church.

Jesse became a landowner in 1804. Samuel D. Cozens deeded him 200 acres of land patented as Crown Land in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. This land remained in the Bennett family until c1876 when grandsons of Jesse sold the land to the Western Can. L & S Co.

According to "The Ashbridge Book", Jesse was a millwright and lost his life due to an accident at a mill. This is probably a fairly accurate description of Jesse’s demise. It is clear that he died suddenly, not of some long illness. Being a Millwright in those early times was a dangerous occupation. He died in the prime of his life, February 1813, without a will. (See Documents page for Catherine’s Letter of Administration)  Inscribed on his tombstone is his age at death which is 32 years.

Registration #42342 dated 25 Nov. 1850 shows his 1st born son Jacob, leaving a will and naming his sons Hugh, Jacob and his nephew John as inheritors. Thus, it is presumed that the land remained in Catherine's name – in trust for her son Jacob I and disposed of by Jacob I's will.

Catherine then remarried in 1820 to Thomas Watts. He was active in the Rebellion of 1837 and was imprisoned for his part in the uprising, later being pardoned..

Catherine is shown as living on the home farm in the 1851/52 census together with the widows of her sons Jacob and Jesse, as well as grandchildren. She is again listed as a widow.
