Bill's Words of Introduction

Just as an introduction to those who may not know me, my full given name is Roberson William Hughes, Jr. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina and raised in the south. Most of my growing up years were spent in the beautiful little town of Camden in Kershaw County, and I have many very fond memories of those years. I have been interested in my family ancestry for many years, but have only been doing really serious research since my heart failure in January of 1993.

We all know that we have ancestors, but not all that many folks go to the time and effort to find out anything at all about them. I must admit that I have been amazed at the great diversity of people to whom I am related through time. Another thing that has surprised me was discovering that I come from such "old blood" in these United States. Virtually all of my blood lines were settled in this country prior to the advent of the Revolutionary War, giving me quite a few Veterans of that war.

A rare exception to this was a paternal line 5Xgreat grandfather, Johannes Schwalm, who came to this country as a result of being drafted in the Hessen Region of Germany by the ruler there, and contracted out to King George III of England to fight against the Colonists. The ship that he was on was captured by privateers, and he ended up in Philadelphia, where he switched sides and settled in s.e. PA, which is the area for all of the paternal lines of my family.

All of my maternal line families were settled into the areas of what are now Kershaw and Lancaster Counties in South Carolina prior to the war.I invite you to take a look at my lines. If any of these families are connected to you in some way, please feel free to use whatever information that would be helpful. If so, please make a short post in the Guestbook.

Thank you for stopping by, and have a great day.

Bill

Note from Webmaster:  Bill "really" did not want me to change things much. So, I'm leaving it pretty much intact as per his request. My love to all...
