Obituary. Mary Hayns

2. Died of consumption, June 22nd, 1843, at Treliggo, in the parish of St. Teath, in the Michaelstow Circuit, County of Cornwall, Mary Hayns, aged 25 years. She was belessed with pious parents, who have been members of the Bible Christian Society for many years, and their good example, advice, and prayers, no doubt were rendered a means of making some good impressions on her mind. When a child, she was sent to the Sunday School, where she was

"taught to read,
The Book of life divine,
Where our Redeemer's love
And brightest glories shine."

Thus she was restrained from open vice, while she remained destitute of true religion. At the age of 12 years she left her father's house, and lived with a farmer in the village of Treliggo. About this time she was brought to see herself a sinner, and felt the need of obtaining mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ. Her mother informed me that she obtained mercy and met in class with God's people for about two years being happy in her Saviour's love; but after that, she got weary in well-doing. She gave way to sin, and her goodness was like the mourning cloud and as the early dew, it goeth away. For some years she did not meet in society with God's people, but lived without God and without hope in the world; however, she found no rest for her soul until she came again to Christ the chief Shepherd.

Some time after her marriage her husband was converted to God. He was made happy while at his daily labour, and came home rejoicing in God his Saviour. This affected the heart of his wife. Sister Mary S. Bastard called on them as she was going to class-meeting, and as they were talking together, she began to cry for mercy. Sister Bastard began to sing,

"Come to Jesus, Just now; &c."

They then prayed together; the Lord heard them and saved the broken-hearted sinner. Husband and wife now both joined the Bible Christian Society, of which Society the widower is still a member. After our deceased sister had been a member three or four years, she was taken very ill, and when she was confined to her bed, she was tempted to doubt of her acceptance with God; but the snare was broken, and she exclaimed, "Though the roaring lion is mighty, I have proved the Lion of the tribe of Judah to be Almighty to deliver me." In her sufferings she glorified God, committing the "keeping of her soul to him in well-doing, as unto a faithful Creator."

The Preachers and other praying friends who visited her, found her in the enjoyment of great peace. The writer visited her several times during her illness, and heard her talk of death without any fear. On the 21st of June she was very happy; and her soul was hoping to join the heavenly company. The next afternoon she sweetly fell asleep in Jesus, leaving a husband and two little children to lament their loss. May they, the writer, and all who read this brief account, meet her in the heavenly world.
Wm. Calloway.
