Most of the information on these sources was collected during the summer of 2000 and updated in July, 2006. A few sites have disappeared or changed in that time.

If there is any question as to whether you have permission to reprint, ASK! Most people are extremely generous.

If you have other possible sources to suggest, please let me know.

About.com Lots of genealogy information on this site. Kimberly Powell, Genealogy Guide at About.com, writes "I would love to have my information listed on your Web site, and I do hold the copyright to most of it myself. But while I work for About.com, people do have to go through them for reprint permission. I wanted to tell you that it is a relatively easy thing to gain permission from them, however. I have already had several newsletter, newspaper, and book publishers wanting to reprint information/articles from my site, and in each case About.com gave them the right to reprint for free. They do have to sign a reprint license which will give them the right to reprint the article for that one purpose only." Please send reprint requests to Kimberly Powell . Check out theArchives and How to's. A new weekly newsletter About Ancestry - Genealogy Newsletter features genealogy articles, tips, news, forum conversations, humor and more! Past issues are archived.

America's Library (at the Library of Congress site) offers a variety of information. Some of the articles at the America's Story page would go well in newsletters. Check the American Memory page as well. "The America's Library site is in the public domain, as it was created by the federal govt. We would, however, appreciate a credit, such as :"From Library of Congress America's Library website (www.americaslibrary.gov)." My only caution is that some of the 20th century materials are under copyright. You will need to verify their status yourself if you want to use them. Thanks."

Ancestor News Bi-weekly column of good genealogical information. Archives and subscription information are at this site. Permission is granted for use in genealogical or historical publications with credit as indicated at end of column. Editor Nancy Hendrixson says, "I publish AncestorNews, an e-mail newsletter for Internet genealogy. The newsletter in whole or in part may be freely reprinted as long as the source is credited. Back issues are archived." Contact: Nancy Hendrixson. Links listed on the "Resource Page" are not covered in permission to reprint, so individual authors must be contacted for permission to use..

Ancestry.com Columns Ancestry.com has a group of excellent columnists. Reprint information on Dick Eastman's column and Michael Neill's column are included individually below. Unless otherwise noted, columns cannot be reprinted without permission. Use them for reference only -- or contact the individual author for possible permission to reprint a specific column.

Ancestry Weekly Journal A weekly email newsletter with lots of information and some articles. Back issues are archived. Editor Juliana Smith said in 2001, "Please feel free to circulate this newsletter to other genealogy enthusiasts! We hope that you will also credit the Weekly News as the source." To subscribe. The Daily News was changed to a weekly format in 2006. The Ancestry Weekly Journal no longer includes the reprint policy in the newsletter itself. Editor Juliana Smith says that the reprint policy remains the same -- "Reprint Policy: We encourage the circulation of the Ancestry Daily News via non-profit newsletters and lists providing that you credit the author, include any copyright information (Copyright © 1998-2006, MyFamily.com Inc. and its subsidiaries.), and cite the "Ancestry Daily News" (http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews) as the source, so that others can learn about our free newsletter as well." Check Michael Neill's listing below for terms of use on his articles.

Boston States Migrations Great statistics on mariner activities, with wider scope than you'd expect from the site name. There is also a index of over 2000 Italian sailors available for download. "Permission to excerpt information from the charts or analysis would be granted, if you let me know what you would like to excerpt and where you would like to use it. I may have corrections or other statistical summaries. Articles could also provide hints for the patterns of transcription errors to watch for, as well as hints for the rather cumbersome searches between the various databases." Contact Sharon for information or permission to use.

The Cemetery Column is an electronic journal on everything associated with genealogy and cemeteries, including: "Featured Articles" - in-depth articles on specialized topics; "Voices from the Grave" - commentary, opinion, ideas; "The Mausoleum" - reference material on history, funeral practices, law, business, recording data ; "Tomb-talk" - one-on-one interviews with people in the interest of genealogy and cemeteries. This article may be reprinted freely, but let  Steve Johnson, Editor know you plan to do so. Check with him about reprinting other material from the site.

"We consider reprint requests on an individual basis, but we often allow small non-profit newsletters to reprint a single article once, providing they include the proper credit and copyright notice. We do not allow "reprints" on the Web, however, preferring instead to have the other site place a link to the original article on the Everton site. (All articles from the Family History Newsline are archived online, beginning with the first articles in January 1997.)"

Michael Neill's column in Ancestry Daily News has excellent articles. "My reprint policy is as follows. Please note that it only applies to articles that I have written for the Ancestry Daily News (ezine). Articles for Family Tree Maker Online are written under a separate agreement. 1) The original date/place of publication be cited.; 2) The text not be altered or edited; 3) My name and copyright notice be included. Brief bio is nice, but optional; 4) I be sent a copy of the issue in which the article appears (Michael Neill, PO Box 108, Rio, IL 61472-0108)." The articles are archived. See article "Tigger's Family Tree Search: What We Can Learn From Him" on the Articles page for a sample. Contact Michael for further information.

Notable Women Website dedicated to notable women -- and all the women in our lives are notable to us. "The articles posted at my "Notable Women Ancestors" site are the property of the submitters, therefore any reprinting must be with the permission of the person who submitted the story as well as my own, as webmaster. I'm pretty flexible - as long as the person who submitted the story is agreeable, I usually have no problem allowing reproduction. But since much of the material is original, both in research data, writing and photographs, it's imperative that the submitter be contacted. E-mail addresses for submitters appear on each individual page and if someone is unable to reach the submitter, simply e-mail me and I can track 'em down. Contact webmaster for more information.

The Family Tree Ezine: An online version of the Odom Library's The Family Tree newsletter. The short articles on the site make great fillers. No reprint policy is given on the site and there has been no response to my request for a statement of policy, but the hardcopy version states "You are welcome to use anything not copyrighted from this publication without writing for specific permission. It is appreciated if a credit line can be given. Certain advertisers and writers may retain copyright on material which will be clearly marked as such. You must contact them about permission to use their material." Current information is that the newsletter will not be published after the June/July 2006 issue. Check the archives (near the bottom of the page) -- the Wee Snippets in each issue make great fillers.

WebCentral. Note: This site seems to have disappeared by 2006. This site has a number of lists that would make good fillers - see the Alamo list on the fillers page; all are available for reprint unless stated otherwise. Webmaster Noela Hill states, "Reprint policy is -- the text files on my site are files uploaded by genealogists for all to share - and I have more though many may stipulate no commercial use. So go for it."  [Note: I'm leaving this listing in hopes that the site will reappear at some time.]
